I agree with that philosophy but, without the caption I'd find it
difficult to recognise the monastery as a 'work of man'. The image
probably needs to be a bit larger to get the full impact.

 Hi all

Bill and Doug mentioned (in another thread) about upsizing cropped
 images.

I've been looking at some of the dedicated software packages that claim
to be able to upsize while maintaining good quality and, for my needs
(upsizing by 50-100%) I find it difficult to notice much difference
between them and the standard bicubic algorithm in Photoshop, when
applied stepwise in (say) 10% increments. Perhaps differences may show
 up with enlargements beyond 100%.

Just wondering whether anyone has come to any conclusions regarding the
best way to do moderate upsizing.

Also, I've read that applying a small degree of sharpening during
stepwise upsizing can help maintain quality but I can't find any details
of how much and how often sharpening should be applied. Has anyone
 tried this?

The only time I upsize a file is to make a large print. The only way I
look at a large print is
 from a distance.
Having said that, I use Bicubic Smoother, and I don't fret about if it is
 the best way.
 It works for me.

Thanks, Bill. I don't have bicubic smoother in PS6 but stepwise
application of standard bicubic seems to work reasonably for the
occasional upsizing that I need to do. But I'm always on the lookout
for a better way.

Re: PEF vs DNG: The Battle for Hard Drive Space

2008-06-28 Thread Peter Loveday
I have a rule regards my photo files: if I don't have the original and
two copies on separate media, the file doesn't exist.

This is why I went to a mirrored RAID for my file storage. As soon as I
 save the file to my
Drive E, I have one level of redundancy.
After I save it to my external box, I have 3 levels of redundant back-up.
 This makes me happy.

You can never have too many :)

RAID is nice, but don't ever assume its all you need (as I note you have
not, just commenting); I have seen a power supply go and simultaneously
take out all drives in a RAID before.

I usually try to keep an offsite version too; three copies in the same place
don't help much if there's a fire. I had considered a fire safe, but I've
heard people say that they're not necessarily going to save a DVD/HD..
they're okay for paper documents, but the plastics etc are a bit more
delicate in the moderate heat that gets through.

Right now I'm burning DVDs to leave with family; though I am considering an
external HDD (or perhaps two, to rotate), that I leave there.

K20D PC/hotshoe triggering above X-Sync speeds?

2008-06-28 Thread Peter Loveday
Does anyone know if any way to force the K20D to trigger the PC/hotshoe at
shutter speeds about 1/180?

I'm not talking about HSS (or indeed dedicated flash at all), and I
understand all the issues with flah sync; this is for a project where I
still want a trigger at any shutter speed. Hotshoe would be ideal, but PC
sync would do.

I've been over all the settings, and can't find anything, but I thought I
would ask here in case anyone knew any tricks.

G'day All,

I had a mission today. Buy some stop bath for film processing. I know
I don't really need it, but we are water poor here, so in an attempt
to help save water I wanted stop bath.

There aren't many places around town that sell BW chemistry these
days, so I had to drive into the city (I hate having to do that). I
went to a place I've known about for ages but had never been too. They
didn't have any. So I stocked up on other chemistry while I was there:

http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2991.jpg

Luckily just around the corner is another place that usually has a
good range of papers chemicals. There I found what I wanted:

http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2988.jpg

Now some may be asking why the interest in film? I just feel like a
change. And I need to refresh my memory. Also my father has expressed
an interest in processing his own BW.

Now while I was at this second store I had a good look around at the
bags tripods, drooled over the Leica M8, Leica M7, Voigtlander
Bessa 2A/3A, Hasselblad H2, Hasselblad X-Pan, Linhof 617 etc, etc,
etc.

In the corner, to my surprise, was a decent selection of Pentax kit.
K20D, K200D, FA 50mm, DA* 16-50mm, DA* 50-135mm, DA 21mm, DA 40mm DA
70mm. Uh oh, I was in trouble:

http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2990.jpg

Last one in stock, demo copy (yay for discount :-). I had been
resisting this lens for some time due to the smallish max. aperture (I
shoot quite a bit of hand held low light stuff) but today my
resistance was low.

Anyway I got it home fired off a few test shots at the first things
I passed and the way from the car to the house:

And something I probably shouldn't have shot, lest I void the warranty:

Re: Upsizing Images

2008-06-28 Thread pnstenquist
Bicubic smoother is best for upsizing in the amounts you indicate. And you
really don't gain anything by doing it in steps. In fact, you introduce more
opportunity for errors. Genuine Fractals offers advantages in huge upsizes --
alont the order of 300% or more because it doesn't work at a pixel level. It's
useful when generating an image for a billboard or something like that.

RE: Sensor resolution V focal length..........

Oops I mixed up viewing and printing. 100% at 96dpi makes a rather large
display on the monitor, but 100% at 300dpi isn't too huge at all.

Intermediate print sizes, say up to 24in x 36in, I always found troublesome
because viewers so often stick their noses right up against them and
criticize the graininess and softness. Bigger than that and it no longer
was a problem because viewers had to back off for a proper appreciation of
the big picture, or couldn't get close anyway.

It's been many years since I made a giant enlargement, and only ever type C
or silver gelatin, never inkjet. I don't miss doing them.

  You
wouldn't print at 100%, the only practical use for this view is when

Often, I print at well over 100%. One of my favourites at the moment is a

 Hi all

Bill and Doug mentioned (in another thread) about upsizing
 cropped
 images.

I've been looking at some of the dedicated software
 packages that claim
to be able to upsize while maintaining good quality and,
 for my needs
(upsizing by 50-100%) I find it difficult to notice much
 difference
between them and the standard bicubic algorithm in
 Photoshop, when
applied stepwise in (say) 10% increments. Perhaps
 differences may show
 up with enlargements beyond 100%.

Just wondering whether anyone has come to any conclusions
 regarding the
best way to do moderate upsizing.

Also, I've read that applying a small degree of
 sharpening during
stepwise upsizing can help maintain quality but I can't
 find any details
of how much and how often sharpening should be applied.
 Has anyone
 tried this?

The only time I upsize a file is to make a large print. The
only way I look at a large print is
 from a distance.
Having said that, I use Bicubic Smoother, and I don't
fret about if it is the best way.
 It works for me.

I'm not talking about HSS (or indeed dedicated flash at all), and I
understand all the issues with flah sync; this is for a project where I
still want a trigger at any shutter speed. Hotshoe would be ideal, but PC
 sync would do.

Re: PEF vs DNG: The Battle for Hard Drive Space

2008-06-28 Thread George Sinos
I'm just tacking onto this thread because it deals with backup strategies.

Smugmug just released a new archiving feature called SmugVault.

Until now, Smugmug's unlimited space, feature was limited to jpg, gif
and png files. Customers have been asking for a way to store raw
files for quite sometime, even at an increased cost.

The current unlimited space policy remains unchanged, but for all
other file types, storage is available, at this writing for about 22
cents per gigabyte per month. There are other reasonable charges for
upload and download bandwidth.

I emphasize that this is for any file type, not just photo related
stuff. There are also some very tempting organizational features for
photo file types.

The details are here: http://www.smugmug.com/price/smugvault.mg

I figured the annual cost of storing my current photo library would
be about the same as the one time purchase price of an adequately
sized external drive.

The advantage over a local drive is obvious. The files are located off-site.

So, I'm considering changing my backup strategy. A local archive
device, such as a Drobo, combined with the off-site SmugVault should
be relatively easy to maintain, convenient and not horribly expensive
way to go.

This was years ago, in the early 70s.
We found some 60 rolls of some Kodak BW paper, so we decided to make some

We stapled the paper to the wall of his dad's fairly recently renovated

We should have used larger film, the exposure was somewhere in the range of an

Several gallons of chemistry were applied with mops, the print now being

Pentax have never really got to grips with flash. I remember always
being confused and disappointed in the way the LX handled it. I'm much
more impressed with the Olympus flash system, and I know Nikon are
very good at flash. With my Olympus you can use flash at any shutter
speed because of their 'Super FP' mode - which has been available
since the days of the OM system. Although I've never used flash much,
when I do use it I want it to be able to do what I want, and Pentax
have always been pretty poor in that area.

 been nice, but we
had to be satisfied with rolling it out on the back lawn (which recovered
 eventually), ans
spraying it with a garden hose for an hour.

Today, I would say that the results were not worth the effort, but when you
 are 16..

From: Bob W
Subject: RE: K20D PC/hotshoe triggering above X-Sync speeds?

Does anyone know if any way to force the K20D to trigger
 the PC/hotshoe at
  shutter speeds about 1/180?

It doesn't look like it. I hooked my Metz up to the PC
terminal, and tried. The flash trigger
appears to be turned off at speeds above 1/180 second.

Pentax have never really got to grips with flash. I remember always
being confused and disappointed in the way the LX handled it.

Same here. The first wedding I shot with my LX it buggered me up by refusing to
trigger the
flash in common fill flash situations. I didn't discover this little design
flaw until I had a
bridesmaid coming down the aisle towards me.
I ended up with a few K1000s that became my 35mm wedding cameras.
They did exactly what they were told to do.
I like that in a camera.

RE: Sensor resolution V focal length..........

2008-06-28 Thread J. C. O'Connell
I dont know why you edited my post but your reply to it makes no
sense to me. Are you trying to say that at todays pixel densities
(6-14Mp APS sized sensors) that the lens resolution doesnt matter
and going to a smaller physical sized sensor via cropping and higher
density sensor will not lower
image resolution if you use a shorter FL lens of same quality? I say
it WILL lower image quality because the lens resolution in absolute
lines per millimeter is nowhere near the point where it isnt affecting
final system resolution. Maybe if we were using 640x480 sensors
it wouldnt matter, but not now, the lens IS affecting final image
resolution even the best ones. Only if it had INFINATE resolution
would it have zero effect when you used shorter lens/cropped sensor
combination. i.e. using a shorter lens and cropping a 14mP sensor image
wont be as good as using a longer lens and NOT cropping a 10mP sensor
image.

Why to buy a K20D?

2008-06-28 Thread Brendan MacRae
Hey gang...

Been too busy of late to post anything in a while.
But, I have been thinking of purchasing the K20D and
for the first ever, I need help on this one.

For those of you who've taken the plunge already, I
have to ask why? I'm mostly looking for a second digi
body and I'm in the process of selling one of the last
of my 35mm film bodies (only the LX will remain).
However, after reading a bit on the list about back
focus issues and realizing that the camera may have a
new sensor but still has the same shutter and other
things I decided to play the wait and see game.

The cost is now down a bit and the new lenses are
starting to trickle out. The firmware has been updated
to handle some issues. It seems like a good time to
buy. For the record, I don't care about live view and
I don't need a PC socket. Mostly I'm concerned with
image quality and better dynamic range. In contrasty
scenes does the K20D better handle highlights? The
higher ISO ability is good but from what I've seen the
camera is still not a great high ISO performer.

So, I need to know some hands-on type experiences that
y'all have had to help push me over the edge. Some
beloved feature or user story that might help convince
me. What do you really like about the K20D that isn't
there on the K10D?

-Brendan

To get what I wanted here called for two trips down the hill. On the

to minimize DOF. So it's shot with direct flash at 1:1, ISO 200, f3.2

Re: Why to buy a K20D?

2008-06-28 Thread Paul Stenquist
In truth, the K20D is an excellent high ISO performer, but like most
digital cameras, correct exposure is essential. Underexpose and the
noise multiplies. That's why you hear mixed reviews. But a properly

noise levels to a properly exposed ISO 400 shot from the K10D.
I would guess dynamic range is about two stops better with the

I'm not talking about HSS (or indeed dedicated flash at all), and I
understand all the issues with flah sync; this is for a project
 where I
still want a trigger at any shutter speed. Hotshoe would be ideal,
 but PC
 sync would do.

I've been over all the settings, and can't find anything, but I
 thought I
would ask here in case anyone knew any tricks.

The short answer is that there is no way to trigger a flash at
exposure times over the X sync speed unless you're using a dedicated
Pentax flash unit and HSS mode. I'm certain that Pentax considers
this a plus for most of their users.

What the ist-D will do is not allowing plain TTL however which is

Re: Sensor resolution V focal length..........

2008-06-28 Thread Jos from Holland
No, I try to say that lens resolution matters a lot. I see it as follows:

If I have a good lens with 100 lines/mm, that means 2400 lines on 24mm

If I have a (simplified) sensor with 4800pixels on 24mm I could show
these 2400lines
If vertical lines, I would see only 2400lines if they fall exactly on
the raster : one pixel on, one pixel off.
If the whole picture shifts by half a pixel, EVERY pixel receives 50%
light and you see no lines at all.
If you rotate the vertical lines slight ly, you see yaggies.
My statement is that 100lines /mm lens resolution is worth much more
than 200 pixels /mm
And lens resolution is still better than the pixel density can show
Greetz Jos

J. C. O'Connell wrote:
Only if it had INFINATE resolution
would it have zero effect when you used shorter lens/cropped sensor
combination. i.e. using a shorter lens and cropping a 14mP sensor image
wont be as good as using a longer lens and NOT cropping a 10mP sensor
 image.

 On top:
if lens resolution (number of line per mm) is in same order of magnitude
as the number of pixels / mm on the sensor. The lens has the huge
advantage the the lines can be at any place even diagonally, but the
pixels have discrete position making the pixels/mm much less effective,
this leads to at least 50% advantage for the lens resolution.

On Top: 10 Mpixels does not mean 10Mp for BLU or RED not even for Green

Exact theoreticle comparison of lens resolution and pixel density is
hard and will be very much picture content dependent

Re: K20D PC/hotshoe triggering above X-Sync speeds?

2008-06-28 Thread pnstenquist
I use high speed synch mode on a regular bases. it works very well. If one were
able to trigger the flash above synch speed in normal mode, the result would be
a frame that is exposed unevenly. We used to be able to do that with some
cameras. The result is predictable.

Re: Why to buy a K20D?

I've read enough that I'm about ready to pop for the K20D.
High sensitivity resolution performance is one big reason. I like the option of
being given high image detail and having PP control over the noise.

The increased resolution is obviously a great feature.
As you say, it's especially nice when you need to
 crop.

It's good to hear that your high ISO experience has
been better than some have reported. I rarely shoot
above 400 but it would be nice to know I can if
 needed.

 Thanks for your input.

  Underexpose and the
noise multiplies. That's why you hear mixed
 reviews.
  But a properly
exposed ISO 1600 shot from the K20D is approximately
  equivalent in
noise levels to a properly exposed ISO 400 shot from
  the K10D.
I would guess dynamic range is about two stops
  better with the
Extended Dynamic Range function turned on. Maybe
  even a bit more. You
certainly will capture more highlights. And the
  higher resolution has
been a boon to me in terms of cropping

For those of you who've taken the plunge

  I
have to ask why? I'm mostly looking for a

However, after reading a bit on the list about

The cost is now down a bit and the new lenses are
starting to trickle out. The firmware has been
  updated
to handle some issues. It seems like a good time
  to

   I don't need a PC socket. Mostly I'm
 concerned
  with
image quality and better dynamic range. In
  contrasty
scenes does the K20D better handle highlights?
 The
higher ISO ability is good but from what I've
 seen
  the
camera is still not a great high ISO performer.

So, I need to know some hands-on type experiences
  that
y'all have had to help push me over the edge.
 Some

Pentax have never really got to grips with flash. I remember always
being confused and disappointed in the way the LX handled it. I'm much
more impressed with the Olympus flash system, and I know Nikon are
very good at flash. With my Olympus you can use flash at any shutter
speed because of their 'Super FP' mode - which has been available
since the days of the OM system. Although I've never used flash much,
when I do use it I want it to be able to do what I want, and Pentax
have always been pretty poor in that area.

Pentax introduced HSS (flash syncro at any speed) in 2001 when the MZ-S
appeared. The AF360FGZ and AF540FGZ are HSS-capable units.
