Re: PESO: Hanle monastery
I agree with that philosophy but, without the caption I'd find it difficult to recognise the monastery as a 'work of man'. The image probably needs to be a bit larger to get the full impact. Re: PEF vs DNG: The Battle for Hard Drive Space
I have a rule regards my photo files: if I don't have the original and two copies on separate media, the file doesn't exist. This is why I went to a mirrored RAID for my file storage. As soon as I save the file to my Drive E, I have one level of redundancy. After I save it to my external box, I have 3 levels of redundant back-up. This makes me happy. You can never have too many :) RAID is nice, but don't ever assume its all you need (as I note you have not, just commenting); I have seen a power supply go and simultaneously take out all drives in a RAID before. I usually try to keep an offsite version too; three copies in the same place don't help much if there's a fire. I had considered a fire safe, but I've heard people say that they're not necessarily going to save a DVD/HD.. they're okay for paper documents, but the plastics etc are a bit more delicate in the moderate heat that gets through. Right now I'm burning DVDs to leave with family; though I am considering an external HDD (or perhaps two, to rotate), that I leave there. - Peter -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

K20D PC/hotshoe triggering above X-Sync speeds?
Does anyone know if any way to force the K20D to trigger the PC/hotshoe at shutter speeds about 1/180? I'm not talking about HSS (or indeed dedicated flash at all), and I understand all the issues with flah sync; this is for a project where I still want a trigger at any shutter speed. Hotshoe would be ideal, but PC sync would do. I've been over all the settings, and can't find anything, but I thought I would ask here in case anyone knew any tricks. Re: Upsizing Images
Bicubic smoother is best for upsizing in the amounts you indicate. And you really don't gain anything by doing it in steps. In fact, you introduce more opportunity for errors. Genuine Fractals offers advantages in huge upsizes -- alont the order of 300% or more because it doesn't work at a pixel level. It's useful when generating an image for a billboard or something like that. RE: Sensor resolution V focal length..........
Oops I mixed up viewing and printing. 100% at 96dpi makes a rather large display on the monitor, but 100% at 300dpi isn't too huge at all. Intermediate print sizes, say up to 24in x 36in, I always found troublesome because viewers so often stick their noses right up against them and criticize the graininess and softness. Bigger than that and it no longer was a problem because viewers had to back off for a proper appreciation of the big picture, or couldn't get close anyway. It's been many years since I made a giant enlargement, and only ever type C or silver gelatin, never inkjet. I don't miss doing them. Re: PEF vs DNG: The Battle for Hard Drive Space
I'm just tacking onto this thread because it deals with backup strategies. Smugmug just released a new archiving feature called SmugVault. Until now, Smugmug's unlimited space, feature was limited to jpg, gif and png files. Customers have been asking for a way to store raw files for quite sometime, even at an increased cost. The current unlimited space policy remains unchanged, but for all other file types, storage is available, at this writing for about 22 cents per gigabyte per month. There are other reasonable charges for upload and download bandwidth. I emphasize that this is for any file type, not just photo related stuff. There are also some very tempting organizational features for photo file types. The details are here: http://www.smugmug.com/price/smugvault.mg I figured the annual cost of storing my current photo library would be about the same as the one time purchase price of an adequately sized external drive. The advantage over a local drive is obvious. The files are located off-site. So, I'm considering changing my backup strategy. A local archive device, such as a Drobo, combined with the off-site SmugVault should be relatively easy to maintain, convenient and not horribly expensive way to go. I remember always being confused and disappointed in the way the LX handled it. I'm much more impressed with the Olympus flash system, and I know Nikon are very good at flash. With my Olympus you can use flash at any shutter speed because of their 'Super FP' mode - which has been available since the days of the OM system. Although I've never used flash much, when I do use it I want it to be able to do what I want, and Pentax have always been pretty poor in that area. RE: Sensor resolution V focal length..........
I dont know why you edited my post but your reply to it makes no sense to me. Are you trying to say that at todays pixel densities (6-14Mp APS sized sensors) that the lens resolution doesnt matter and going to a smaller physical sized sensor via cropping and higher density sensor will not lower image resolution if you use a shorter FL lens of same quality? I say it WILL lower image quality because the lens resolution in absolute lines per millimeter is nowhere near the point where it isnt affecting final system resolution. Maybe if we were using 640x480 sensors it wouldnt matter, but not now, the lens IS affecting final image resolution even the best ones. Only if it had INFINATE resolution would it have zero effect when you used shorter lens/cropped sensor combination. i.e. using a shorter lens and cropping a 14mP sensor image wont be as good as using a longer lens and NOT cropping a 10mP sensor image. Why to buy a K20D?
Hey gang... Been too busy of late to post anything in a while. But, I have been thinking of purchasing the K20D and for the first ever, I need help on this one. For those of you who've taken the plunge already, I have to ask why? I'm mostly looking for a second digi body and I'm in the process of selling one of the last of my 35mm film bodies (only the LX will remain). However, after reading a bit on the list about back focus issues and realizing that the camera may have a new sensor but still has the same shutter and other things I decided to play the wait and see game. The cost is now down a bit and the new lenses are starting to trickle out. The firmware has been updated to handle some issues. It seems like a good time to buy. For the record, I don't care about live view and I don't need a PC socket. Mostly I'm concerned with image quality and better dynamic range. In contrasty scenes does the K20D better handle highlights? The higher ISO ability is good but from what I've seen the camera is still not a great high ISO performer. So, I need to know some hands-on type experiences that y'all have had to help push me over the edge. Some beloved feature or user story that might help convince me. Re: Why to buy a K20D?
In truth, the K20D is an excellent high ISO performer, but like most digital cameras, correct exposure is essential. Underexpose and the noise multiplies. That's why you hear mixed reviews. But a properly exposed ISO 1600 shot from the K20D is approximately equivalent in noise levels to a properly exposed ISO 400 shot from the K10D. I would guess dynamic range is about two stops better with the Extended Dynamic Range function turned on. Maybe even a bit more. You certainly will capture more highlights. And the higher resolution has been a boon to me in terms of cropping opportunities. Paul On Jun 28, 2008, at 3:31 PM, Brendan MacRae wrote: Hey gang... The short answer is that there is no way to trigger a flash at exposure times over the X sync speed unless you're using a dedicated Pentax flash unit and HSS mode. Re: Sensor resolution V focal length..........
No, I try to say that lens resolution matters a lot. I see it as follows: If I have a good lens with 100 lines/mm, that means 2400 lines on 24mm If I have a (simplified) sensor with 4800pixels on 24mm I could show these 2400lines If vertical lines, I would see only 2400lines if they fall exactly on the raster : one pixel on, one pixel off. If the whole picture shifts by half a pixel, EVERY pixel receives 50% light and you see no lines at all. If you rotate the vertical lines slight ly, you see yaggies. My statement is that 100lines /mm lens resolution is worth much more than 200 pixels /mm And lens resolution is still better than the pixel density can show Greetz Jos J. C. O'Connell wrote: I dont know why you edited my post but your reply to it makes no sense to me. Re: Why to buy a K20D?
The increased resolution is obviously a great feature. As you say, it's especially nice when you need to crop. It's good to hear that your high ISO experience has been better than some have reported. Re: K20D PC/hotshoe triggering above X-Sync speeds?
I use high speed synch mode on a regular bases. it works very well. If one were able to trigger the flash above synch speed in normal mode, the result would be a frame that is exposed unevenly. We used to be able to do that with some cameras. The result is predictable. Hotshoe would be ideal, but PC sync would do. I've been over all the settings, and can't find anything, but I thought I would ask here in case anyone knew any tricks. The short answer is that there is no way to trigger a flash at exposure times over the X sync speed unless you're using a dedicated Pentax flash unit and HSS mode. I'm certain that Pentax considers this a plus for most of their users.
