Looks like a beautiful old building and a great restoration job.
Reminds me a bit of the QVB in Sydney.

About the best they can manage here is to keep the facade of an old
building and put a completely new one up inside it.

You did well in regard to the direction and diffusion of the light.
The color cast I mentioned in another post is probably due to bouncing
off the mustard colored wall, if that is what you did. Using a piece
of white posterboard or a studio umbrella on a stand as a reflector
would avoid that. But I think you have a great photo here that would

Some excellent suggestions from Paul...You can get rid of the yellowish
cast by adding some blue. On my monitor it also looks a little dark so

Other options for single flash could include some sort of light modifier

here that would be enhanced by a slight color tweak.

Thanks Paul.

Yes indeed the bounce was off the same colored wall. I didn't have any
white poster board on hand but I see what you mean with the slight
colorcast.

Other options for single flash could include some sort of light
modifier on the flash itself. Paul has shown some excellent work
using both LumiQuest and LightSphere products.

I've had some good luck going the cheap route using this -

Nice family portrait - it's hard to get one with everyone's eyes

No kidding. That was the best of about 108 exposures. :-)

Nice shot and a nice looking family! The lighting of your spouse and progeny
looks good, but the light on you has that bounced-flash look.

Assuming that you were using wireless flash, was the pop-up flash set to
master (on) or controller (off)? It's the second-to-last item on the
last screen of the K10D Custom menu. I've found that the combination of
master mode and RAW produces the best results.

Frank, I reckon that sometimes the beauty of the captured moment gets

I should tell you that if you did not write all the story quoted below
and just shown a picture, I wouldn't have thought about this at all.

It is simply very good picture and frankly, I could care less about the
amount of noise reduction you applied or specifics of b/w conversion
that you used.

Sorry, if this is the answer that you did not expect.

Okay, but seriously, I'm happy with this. Had I processed it in PS
I'd have used plenty of noise reduction which would have helped a lot,
but you can only look at and comment on what's on your screen right
now, I understand that. I hope you think it's a cool photo, too. Let
me know.

I do have a question, though. There appear to be horizontal lines
going across this image, the most obvious one going through the
female's upper eye. What are these? I've not noticed them on other
images. I don't know if it's a problem with the camera, the card or
the computer. Any ideas?

Suffering a rare condition. This is a moorhen (Gallinula
chloropus) which is leucistic, a syndrome causing paler than
normal colouring. It can occur either in patches of total
loss, as here, or as a general fading overall, varying in
intensity and coverage to the point where the animal is
almost completely white. Not the same as albinism.

Agree - interesting story Mike. I wonder a bit at the emphasis on the
photographer though. The editor certainly bears some responsibility
in making his/her choice of what image to use. The point of the story
seems to question a photographer's freedom to provide some artistic
interpretation of reality, opting instead for a narrower straight
forward representation of the portrait subject. As though there were
only one reality. Whereas there are in fact many realities, ranging
from the subjects' many self-images to the public's understanding of
the subjects to the editors or photographers understanding of who the
person is. Why should the photographer be the fall guy? It should be
the bill payer (subject or editor) who determines which reality
should be portrayed. IMHO.

I'd tend to agree. A portrait photographer is NOT a reporter or
journalist and operates under a different set of ethics. And in
general the portrait photographers mentioned do so very clearly.

Jill Greenberg is an exception in that on the McCain incident. What
she did was clearly contrary to what the Editor requested. Of course
if the Editor had done some proper homework they would have known that
she's a known publicity hound with no regards for her subjects at the

But first, Greenburg got the shot the editors wanted- the first image
in the slide show.
Since she posted the Evil McCain picture on her own web sight, she
must not have
sold exclusive use of the image to the magazine. In her position, I
wouldn't even offer

the image to the magazine.

Then, at the end of the piece, she said that editors have sent her
out with instructions
to bring back unflattering pictures. So from her prospective, I can
understand why she

didn't consider it to be such a big deal.

I guess it depends on how tightly her contract was written.

BTW- I remember the Washington Post's photos of President Ronald
Reagan were often less
than flattering, so I guess that editorializing by photo isn't a
particularly new concept.

Hi-

NPR's armored car was bombed today. No human casualties- they were
very fortunate.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=97618965

Iraqi police warned them of the bomb, and moments later it went off.
So, no one was hurt. Eggs on side-walk were undamaged.

However, the car was reduced to a burning hulk.

They got audio of the police warning, and then the explosion.

Now, for the on topic bit- the reporter, Ivan Watson, got a nice
group of pictures on the web.

I imagine it was a Canon G10, since that is what they have been
buying lately. If anyone cares, I can find out for sure.

The big irony is that they were in a kabob house, doing a story on
the improving security situation in Baghdad.

The audio should be up in a few hours- maybe 7 or 8 pm EDT

Cheers
Mike

Re: Journalistic Ethics and Photography

2008-11-30 Thread PN Stenquist
Editorializing by photo isn't a new concept, but it's ugly
journalism. It has nothing to do with facts or positions. It's just an
attempt to discredit by virtue of appearances. If you study front page
photos of politicians that have appeared in the New York Times, for
example, you'll see that they are extremely guilty in this regard. I
suppose that some conservative papers do the same to the other side,
although I can't say for sure. I read only the liberal Times and the
conservative Wall Street Journal. The Journal doesn't use photos, only
line-art drawings, which are consistently middle of the road.

I'd tend to agree. A portrait photographer is NOT a reporter or

general the portrait photographers mentioned do so very clearly.

Jill Greenberg is an exception in that on the McCain incident. What

Since she posted the Evil McCain picture on her own web sight, she

the image to the magazine.

Then, at the end of the piece, she said that editors have sent her

understand why she

didn't consider it to be such a big deal.

I guess it depends on how tightly her contract was written.

BTW- I remember the Washington Post's photos of President Ronald

Yes. Approximately 1 million foreclosed on. 27% of that approximately in
California. Supposedly 10,000 in my county alone. Latest figures I heard were
10
million unemployed (though it seems hard to believe and I can't swear to
that, but figure its several million). Arnold is balancing CA's budget by
taking
away some benefits from disabled, taking away some teacher's pensions,
cutting pensions, closing schools, and removing renters' credit. So CA, in
particular, is hard hit.

OTOH, newspapers and news magazines, and even TV, I suppose, are not putting
faces to the figures (or store fronts to the figures). Not that I can see.
It's like everyone is pretending it isn't happening and that everything is
going along as normal. Which I find weird.

My paranoia series is about more than that. But some of it is just to
redress what I DON'T SEE (in media).

The problem here is that McCain had an agreement with the magazine for
a cover shoot. Greenberg doing here own thing after getting the cover
shot embarrassed the magazine since they'd arranged the subject and
that wasn't part of the deal. Greenberg had tricked McCain into the
additional setup. It would have been different if she'd briefed him
beforehand.

Merlin,
I think the problems are more in California and Florida, where house
prices and sales were very high and New York (financials).
I live in the middle of the country in Illinois, near Chicago, where
home prices and sales were not so ridiculously inflated.
The home sales market is slow here, but I would have to search for a
home that was posted with a bank forclosure sign.
The same is true with commercial real estate (businesses). They have
slower sales, but haven't closed (yet???).
People are concerned and jobs/employment will tell us what the future holds.

PESO x2 - From My Archives

2008-11-30 Thread Anthony Farr
Loggers and preservationists faced off in the mountains near Eden, New South
Wales, in 1989. Police presence kept tempers in check. It was a running
campaign of protests and counter protests, with the loggers blockading roads
to keep preservationists away from logging sites, and the greenies
attempting to infiltrate the blockaded areas overnight. After some days
everyone got bored and went home.

I was there for a client with some Pentaxes and a ship-load of Kodachrome.
IIRC I used a Pentax SMC-M 24~35 1:3.5 for these shots. It was damn cold,
and snow was on the mountain peaks. At the summit of one mountain, where
the police had their radio communication centre set up in a caravan, I had
to put my cameras inside my coat between shots to keep the batteries alive.

These shots make me a little nostalgic for film. The time I spent
retouching fungus off the images cured that nostalgia.

Lyon

2008-11-30 Thread Bob W
Just back from an extremely enjoyable weekend in Lyon with some friends,
stuffing our faces with the produce of the food capital of the world. In the
very short periods between gargantuan meals I staggered outside long enough
to take some pictures. Here's a few - I went a bit mad with the Aged Photo
preset. More to follow.

Now there's a bit o'slang from down under I've not heard before. Laneways.

Not an Aussie term, it's a proper' English name for a narrow road or
access/service road.

The Poms use the term more than us.

Derby, great shot. one of the local flickr members was over there
recently got a shot of this. I laughed myself silly when I saw it. I
love Tetris.

Cheers,

Dave

Re: PESO(s) Signs of The Times #1 #2

Merlin,
I think the problems are more in California and Florida, where house
prices and sales were very high and New York (financials).

I think Bob is overly optimistic, Merlin.

I double checked the statistics, 10 million unemployed is correct.

This comes from government figures.

The unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage point to 6.5 percent in
October,
and the number of unemployed persons increased by 603,000 to 10.1 million.
Over
the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons has increased by 2.8
mil-
lion, and the unemployment rate has risen by 1.7 percentage points.

That's one heck of a lot of people out of work.

Yesterday, when I was taking some pictures, I went into a major department
store. Not lower end. To get people to buy they had marked things down by
40-50%. Some real buys there if one wanted them. (I double checked the prices,
unlike Circuit City, they really were discounted by that much.)

Of course, I think the reason some people don't see it as bad as it really
is is because of lack of media coverage. It is increasing all the time, but
right now it is still minimal.

Later, Marnie :-)
