Weather
I've been staying at my mother's house for a while, after having gotten pneumonia after the flu (doing much better now). Yesterday we had some sort of solid-phase precipitation event -- freezing rain, wintery mix, something that left branches ice-encrusted, though by the time I was looking at it, what was falling out of the sky had reverted to plain liquid and what I was looking at was starting to melt. I grabbed coat, camera, and shoes, and went out to take some photos in the back yard. When I came back in, Mom asked what I was taking pictures of. I explained that I was taking pictures of the ice, and she asked, Why? Mom, as a photographer, if nature does something pretty, I want to claim credit for it. That's why I was photographing ice. I don't think she understood what I meant until I uploaded the photos to my laptop and showed her a close-up of ice on an evergreen. I didn't get anything spectacular, but I did at least manage to reach pretty. Then she complained that my macro shot of a pomegranate seed looked like somebody's liver. -- Glenn -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Upload for the 2009-10 PDML Photo Annual is now live!
Shake off that New Year's Day hangover and dive into your photo archives for your best shot of 2009! The second annual PDML photo book project is now accepting submissions at http://www.robertstech.com/pdmlbook/pdmlbook.php All the details are on the page itself but the basics are: We're doing a PDML photo book and every list member (as of December 2009) gets a shot in the book. You can submit up to 3 photos (but only one is guaranteed acceptance). Book will be available in late March or early April. There will also be a gallery exhibit of photos from the book, held in Chicago from May 7 to June 12. (Unlike the book itself, participation in the gallery show costs money, so it's optional.) So go for it. IF YOU CAN'T CONNECT TO THE WEB PAGE: This will be because your country or IP block is banned due to security/hacking issues in the past. This is most likely to happen if you're in China, Korea, Russia or eastern Europe (or Australia, which shares IP blocks with Asia). Email me off-list and I'll open a hole in the security for your upload. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Hi Mark, Thanks for your efforts on behalf of the PDML. A question: I notice that the specified width is greater than the specified height, yet the book has vertical pages. Thus, vertical photos will be of much lower resolution than horizontal images. Are these specs correct? Did you intend to provide long side vs. short side specs rather than height vs. width? They priced against the intro price to the 1Ds mark III, but haven't dropped their price as radically as Canon has. Note there's a fairly large difference in spec outside the viewfinder and sensor. The D3x is a flagship pro camera and built and sealed like it, the A900 rides the line between amateur and pro and is priced like it. The D3x is the D3s's big brother and is priced like it ($2300 premium over the D3s, and it ain't sensor cost). You're mistaking pricing to the market (A900 is priced comparably to its competition, the 5DmII and D700, the D3x is priced comparably to its competition, the 1DsmIII) as being based on sensor cost. At this level, production cost has much less to do with pricing than perceived pricepoint, the D3x and 1DsmIII for example have HUGE margins on them. Re: FS: 1.4x Converter, K10D Body, etc.
Adam Maas wrote: If you haven't ordered yet, I'd drop teh 24-70L and get the 17-55 IS instead. Better lens overall and stabilized. Excellent suggestion, Adam. And it poses a very tough dilemma. I do like the 17-55... not so much for the stabilization, but for the width as compared to a 24-70L on a 1.6x crop sensor. However, the 17-55mm would not work on a full-frame camera. And so the dilemma is, do you build a lens arsenal based on what you *have* or what you *want*. My hope is that, with 2 or 3 more weddings this year, I can add a FF body to the arsenal (say, a used 5D II if canon replaces it and the price drops). Then the 24-70mm could reside on that body at its native focal length, along with the eventual purchase of a 16-35mm to complete the package... but who knows how far off that is (2 years? 3?). For now, the wide end will have to be covered by the K10D that I'm keeping along with the DA 12-24mm (which I haven't been all that happy with to be honest... maybe it's just mine, but I *struggle* to get that lens to lock focus). I'm also keeping the 20-35mm f4 lens as my around-the-house lens coupled with the K10D. In all, not a perfect solution (I am *so* not looking forward to shooting a wedding with 2 different systems)... but as long as money is still a prohibitive factor in the equation, such is life. It'll have to a gradual transition. I'm lucky enough as it is to be able to get so many components at once (though I gave up a lot in exchange, namely the 300mm and 400mm f2.8 lenses that were going largely unused around here). In any event, I appreciate the food for thought, and any other suggestions you may have. The new body and 3 lenses are already on the way, but returns and exchanges are not out of the question. I guess I've got the weekend to think about it. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PESO - Pensive
Was out celebrating New Years Eve with my middle daughter at (of all places) a local bar called the Bovine Sex Club. The feature band was called Creepshow. I got very few pix of the band, as a mosh pit was happening, and when I got close to the stage I tend to get jostled too much to shoot in low light with slow shutter speed. So I spent lots of time photographing the young people around the bar. This young lady seemed especially pensive. I know, I focused on the wrong eye (wish I'd caught that front eye) but I still rather like this one: http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2010/01/pensive.html Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome. LOL Personally the only thing I'd change is the camera. For the same money get a used 1DmII. The performance level of the 1D series is a stroke of genius, and the slightly larger sensor size pays dividends. The 24-70 will quickly turn into the lens of choice - the close focus ability is awesome, although on an APS-C you'll miss the wide end. The 70-200 is an astonishing lens for what it does. I'm guessing you're looking at the 100 as a portrait lens? With APS-C you might be happier with a 50? Keep some of the mystery, you know? Anyway, it's kind of nice to browse the photos on the web. They may appear more saturated and contrasty than they do in the book. That's of course due to the nature of the media and that fact that I didn't create separately optimized photos for the book and this web page - these are print optimized. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

-- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Glenn Arthur Jr. dgl...@panix.com To: pdml@pdml.net Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 3:41 AM Subject: Weather I've been staying at my mother's house for a while, after having gotten pneumonia after the flu (doing much better now).
