you probably have an idea. But if not, figure you'll want to recoup the cost
 of printing and
framing, plus the 30% the gallery gets, plus a small profit. That will
 probably bring you
to a number close to $300 as an asking price.

That's pretty much the reasoning I followed. I ended up a little
higher, $350 ask / $325 min, for a couple of reasons:

(a) This is the first work of mine that's been exhibited, so there's
sentimental value in holding on to it. (There's a competing value of
being able to say I've sold a print, but I don't really have any
ambition to make a living in photography, so this factor is weaker.)

(b) I don't think we'll make it to Chicago, so there's value in
keeping the finished work so I can see it. Added to this is that I
don't do any digital printing myself; the few digital photos I've
printed have been automated Mpix-type prints. I'd like to see what a
good printer like Mark can do.

So, basically, yeah... I figured out what it would take to break even,
then bumped it up because I'd rather have the print than break even.

definitely. my only ever city speed endo flip (front wheel caught in

could have cracked my skull... helmet opponents say a helmet can
multiply harmful forces as well and that is certainly a fact but I'd

Re: PESOs: Sledding

2010-04-14 Thread P N Stenquist

Hi Boris,
Thanks for the input.

Both the third and first shots have a somewhat cold light temperature.
A hint of aquamarine. The middle one is a hair warmer. But on a
calibrated monitor, they're all within the range of how snow might be
represented, IMO. I probably should have done a better job matching
them, but they're basically snapshots.

Figuring I'd probably fall and was going to have to do quite a bit of
pulling and climging, I just took my Panasonic TZ1. It has a good
lens but a noisy sensor, and of course it underexposed by about a
stop in the snow, so even thought I shout at ISO 200, the results are
a bit noisy. But a big fun s well. Paul

SDM in Cold Weather

2010-04-14 Thread Jack Davis
Something I've been meaning to ask about. Has anyone had the experience of
shooting with an SDM lens, fresh out of the bag from a warm car and into early
morning air chilly enough to produce visible breath fog.
This happened one morning while at the coast DA* 50~135). AF felt as though it
were operating in at least cool molasses. I was attempting to track some birds
in flight and had to pick them up early and try holding focus awaiting the
shutter.
Later in the day, I took it out into the warming sun for a few minutes and
tried it again. This time it seemed to be normally quick in response.
I was relieved, but made me wonder if it's starting to wimp out. K20D battery
appeared to be fully charged.
Any such experiences?

Thanks!

Thanks all.

The SO just finished a call from the company and we have those last
two runs available if we want, and we said yes.

Now there seems to be a ~however~ here now. Sounds like the other
drivers affected by this mass move, when called just grabbed any run
they could think of, and now a lot of people are rethinking, quiting
and such.
Recruiter has us on stand by for Stouffville runs and she seems fairly
confident something should come up in our area, which is preferred as
then i don't have to spend 1/2 a weeks pay on gas to work..
Whats that tell you about 'the company' when people quit before the
new year even starts.:-)

I find school boards just as frustrating to deal with as politicians.

Re: OT Ouch

2010-04-14 Thread Paul Sorenson
That's because they *are* nothing but minor politicians. Years ago, in
the small town that I grew up in, a local businessman provided the
school buses for our school district. A small business that employed
maybe 1/2 dozen drivers plus himself. He was making a living at the
business but not gouging anybody, either.

A hot-shot young lawyer moved into town and told the school board they
couldn't just hire him year after year without competing bids. The
following year a large bus company with state-wide contracts out bid him
and literally put him out of business. I don't know if he ever
recovered financially from that.

OH, don't say that, ecke! ;) Again!

Yeah it is my 2nd lens plus repaired once. These things seem to
happen. As long as it is under warranty I'm OK with it.

I think you may be referring to what my brother calls drag ass drivers.?

I'm not sure what that means but we have a colloquial term in German
Popometer which translates to buttmeter (or perhaps
buttmeasure). For example, my car has this engine shake in idle when
running on LPG that is not there on 95 Octane. It's there since Subaru
replaced the engine under warranty at 43810 km. Also, the pedals
vibrate. It's there, it's annoying and my buttmeter picks it up
because I drive that bucket every day. People at garages don't detect
it for lack of reference. I guess I will have to live with it.

Does that example make it clear?

Yeah, that's kind of interesting, but what I really want to know more
about, is the where a home was gutted by TWO fires?

There was so much that a real reporter would have tried to find out. To
bad there wasn't a real reporter there.

It does, and it's a bit different than what I had guessed. A drag ass is a
person who refuses to go over the speed limit. ;)

Yeah it is my 2nd lens plus repaired once. These things
 seem to
happen. As long as it is under warranty I'm OK with it.

I think you may be referring to what my brother calls
 drag ass drivers.?

I'm not sure what that means but we have a colloquial term
 in German
Popometer which translates to buttmeter (or perhaps
buttmeasure). For example, my car has this engine shake
 in idle when
running on LPG that is not there on 95 Octane. It's there
 since Subaru
replaced the engine under warranty at 43810 km. Also, the
 pedals
vibrate. It's there, it's annoying and my buttmeter picks
 it up
because I drive that bucket every day. People at garages
 don't detect
it for lack of reference. I guess I will have to live with
 it.

Does that example make it clear?

Right. I knew dragging ass for being slow and hauling ass for hurrying
up so I was kind of guessing along those lines. Thanks for making it
clear nonetheless. One of those drove me to hospital once. The people
accompanying me were freaking out but he refused to be bothered or so
I was told later. The hospital had to interrupt an appendix operation
but they fixed me up fine. Looking back I still think calling an
ambulance would have made more sense.

The reality is that school boards ARE politicians, just on a lower rung of
 the ladder.

I wonder if ladder is the best analogy? A ladder implies ascent; i.e.
 going UP.

School board politics are the first step of the descent into hell. Need
 something slightly more Dante-esque.

Borg rejects.??

Thanks for the kind words all.

I was a little worried you all would chastise me for the price i was

It's your work. You, better than anyone else, should know what it's worth.

If you think it's too high, charge less ... too low, charge more. But, you
should know better than we do what will and will not sell in your chosen
 market.

Yes thats true, and i have sold CD's like this for $50.00 for about 5
years, and on one has complained about the price. It probably should
be higher, when every one is happy, so be it.

Plus this type of work is a sure thing, not like my spec days.
