when I'd need/use it.

Go for it Larry, I've got three different 70-210's and you can't have
too many. (I already have a copy of that particular lens and I don't
know why Charles isn't using it much, but it's well worth having. I
think he's asking a very reasonable price for it as well).

Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f2.8-4.0 Macro zoom - $75
- This is a manual-focus, push-pull zoom with a variable aperture
from 2.8 to 4.0. 62mm filter ring, serial number 28426239. It is
an A-Series lens so you can set the aperture from the body. A
"Version 3" lens if you check out Mark Robert's detailed page on
this series of lenses here: http://www.robertstech.com/vivitar.htm

Zenitar 16mm f2.8 fisheye - $100
- K-mount, "m-series compatible" lens. With original front and rear
caps. I've had this for over 15 years, but it's been almost 2 years
since I've taken a picture with it. The original pouch and extra
rear-mount filters are floating around in the house somewhere and I
will dig for them if anyone expresses an interest in this!

Pentax-A 1:1.7 50mm lens - $80
- Clean front and rear elements, no dust/fungus etc. I have the F
version of this lens already so this just never gets used.

Pentax-A 1:4 35-70mm Macro zoom lens - $40
- Funky lightweight constant-aperture zoom lens. Ever since I got
my Tamron 90mm macro, this never gets taken out of the box. There's
a slight ding on the filter mounting ring but I don't have any 58mm
filters to try mounting on it so I can't tell you if it affects the
usage. Can send a detailed photo if you are concerned. Lens info
here: http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/medium/A35-70f4.html

Sigma 70-210mm UC-II f4-5.6 autofocus zoom - $25
- When you just have to have a zoom.

All prices are plus actual shipping costs. I prefer to sell just to
the U.S. but I'm not stuck on that. Drop me a line if you have any
questions/comments, etc.

Well, unfortunately, since I replace a machine in the past year put
me on to Vista and then Windows 7. My calibration system was the
original Colorvision Spyder - and it was discontinued and is not
supported on Vista or Win7. So in short, I am running by eye
calibration right now. Calibration is on my list but there are
several things ahead of it in priority.

I have viewed the image on about 5 different systems/monitors and
have not noticed it to be darker than I intended. So far no one else
has commented on this being dark (of course, not that large of a
group have commented). Perhaps others will chime in.

Tom, perhaps what's bugging you about Eggleston's work subconsciously
is that same thing that bugs me consciously about it. I'm not an
Eggleston hater - quite the contrary, I find I have a greater
appreciation for his work after seeing it in person and in a large
collection. I see some pretty good ideas at play and some pretty good
work resulting. What annoys me is the over-glorification of Eggleston
by the art world. It's as if, after years of dismissing color
photography, when the art snobs found one color photographer they
liked they overreacted to the point of near-deification, compensating
for past oversights by heaping excessive praise on work that didn't
deserve it.

In short, I think his work does deserve praise, but not the ridiculous
adulation it's received from some quarters.

Change that to "overreacted to the point of near-defecation" an I
think you've hit the nail on the head.

What a waste.

Re: Worth selling the K10D if I'm getting the K7?

2010-05-16 Thread P. J. Alling

$200-$300 on ebay. KEH seems to sell them for between $300 and $400.

On 5/6/2010 5:43 PM, Charles Robinson wrote:

I'm about to have enough in my camera fund to pop for a K7.

Yes, I know there are rumors of something newer over the horizon, but that will
take longer than I care to wait, will cost more than I have saved up, and the
K-7 right now is at $843 at BHPhotovideo which is a pretty damned good price.

The question is: Is there any resale value to the K10D? I'd thought about handing it
down to my wife who would like occasionally to learn how to use a "real"
camera, but I hesitate to give her the K10D for the same reasons that I want to replace
it, namely: unpredictable/slow autofocus and exposure which can be all over the map.

On the other hand, if it wouldn't generate more than a couple hundred in
resale, then there really isn't much point in trying to sell it, is there?

What do you all think?

Re: Defection and Bargain

Well, some you win, some you lose.

My son Stef (who some met at GFM last year) is getting more and more
into photography, and will be studying it at 'A' Level in the autumn
[effectively high school here] over 2 years. He's been using the *ist Ds
for lots of projects but before he starts his course he has decided that
he wants to go the Canon route - can't think why!!

When he did work experience last summer with a local paper they had
Nikon and Canon gear, and well, he's decided. So we've been looking out
for an original 1D on eekbay and they seem to be going for about 3 or
400 GBP here but we've hooked a bargain and nabbed one for 240, so he's
a happy bunny. It's the old old 4 MP version, the original but crucially
for him it will do 8fps, which is what he needs for sports photography.

Meanwhile, I filmed at an important local football match last week and
he tagged along with the *ist Ds, and although he wasn;t allowed pitch-
side until the end (had to stick with me, it was 'busy') he picked off
some impressive shots - 10 of which can be seen here:

My wife thinks she is a reasonable photographer, and when she looked at
the pics she swore like I haven't heard in quite a few years!

Sadly I don't have any Canon lenses so the hunt will be on for a wide
and tele-zooms now. Until then, looks like I'll have to replace the
Pentax mounts with Canon ones on the K15 and A*85/1.4

Re: Augenblick gallery

2010-05-16 Thread Stan Halpin
I think that a longer run for the show is a fine idea. But Sue really should
poll each of the contributors and pull any images which a contributor wants
back sooner. For example, how are the sales handled? Does the artist need to
wait until the transaction is finalized (the image handed over to the buyer in
exchange for a cheque)? If so, those who have proceeds coming may prefer not to
wait an extra month. Hopefully the whole collection can stay intact and
available to the public for another month though.

I envy you the chance to go back to the gallery Bob. If it had been a bit more
accessible I would have done that Saturday afternoon. If the show extends, I
might be able to get back up there for an afternoon.

Re: Cleaning Sensors

2010-05-16 Thread John Sessoms

From: Steven Desjardins

I use canned air. It's pretty fast so unless your battery is nearly
dead you should be able to pull it off before the mirror comes back.
Obviously, don't get the tube so close to the sensor that the
cryogenic liquid actually collects on the surface of the sensor.
Also, if something were to get in there larger than dust you could
blow it around hard enough to nick the sensor. Also be sure you don't
accidently grab the WD-40.

Problems with canned "air" as I understand them can be threefold:

1. If you are ham-handed and get the propellant on the sensor it can
leave a sticky residue that attracts more dust. I HAVE SEEN this one,
and am just glad it was NOT ME who effed it up.

2. Some canned "air" uses a solvent propellant that will etch the
surface if you get it on there.

3. Too high pressure may damage the sensor surface.

According to one site, the sensor has an IR filter over it, so you don't
damage the actual sensor, just the IR filter - which may (??) be
replaceable without replacing the sensor. Might not cost as much?

Still whatever the cost, it's too high if you have to both pay and admit
you did something stupid. Sometimes the social costs are more than the
actual dollar charge.

Plus, you're deprived of your camera until it comes back from repair.

I've ruined negatives with cans of gas that spit liquid. I definitely wouldn't
risk using it on a sensor. Yeah, you can probably get away with it most of the
time. But why take a chance? There are better tools with which to clean a
sensor.

I couldn't do that. I'm not an exhibitionist.

I think it's something like a guest house, someplace for a visitor to
stay for a weekend. That sort of thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were full size, wrap-around curtains
that were removed temporarily during the photo shoot.

That's Philip Johnson's "Glass House", in New Canaan CT. Curtains were
not in the plans, and it exists on a multi acre, so inspite of it's
design, the inhabitant has a lot of privacy. The guest house by the way
has /no/ windows

Re: Cleaning Sensors

2010-05-16 Thread Steven Desjardins
Lock the mirror open, lay the camera on the floor, and urinate on the
sensor. I've never heard of a single instance where this failed.
(Don't kill me Bill)

I use canned air. It's pretty fast so unless your battery is nearly
dead you should be able to pull it off before the mirror comes back.
Obviously, don't get the tube so close to the sensor that the
cryogenic liquid actually collects on the surface of the sensor.
Also, if something were to get in there larger than dust you could
blow it around hard enough to nick the sensor. Also be sure you don't
accidently grab the WD-40.

Re: Camera bag for bike trip?

2010-05-16 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I have a rack that takes a top bag and/or pannier bag setup.

I don't go bicycle touring, so I bought the top bag. It has a locking
rail onto the rack and is well padded for my camera gear. It slides
off the rack by undoing a (lockable) catch and has clips for a
shoulder strap. Light, simple, minimalistic. It holds an SLR and up to
three lenses, and I can strap the Manfrotto 190CXpro3 tripod on top of
it if I want to take that along.

I have not heard anything about canned gas this side of the world.
Interviewing, a local technician (remember those things are built
here...), the thing to worry about is the mirror crashing down on you
while you're wiping the sensor because the battery died. They
mention, as a rule, that they have an AC adapter to make sure that
does not happened.

I wouldn't trust anyone cleaning my sensor other than the manufacturer's
service center. And I'd be nervous about having them do it.

I simply use an ear blower that was sterile when I bought it. It's kept in a
box when not in use. If it can't remove a speck, I use the Pentax sensor
cleaner, which is quite easy to use and very effective:
http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-Image-Sensor-Cleaning-O-ICK1/product-reviews/B0018ODLH6/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

As one user notes in the amazon reviews, it looks like the kit includes less
than a buck worth of material. But it works very well. To me, that makes it a
good buy.

Overplayed? Maybe just a bit. I'm living down south where they even play

Funny, the lens mounts on my 2 lenses aren't trashed. They work fine on
a Canon body, and re-eqipped with Pentax mounts, work fine back on
Pentax, albeit in stop down metering mode. Not a problem for me as I
only use the 85 wide open for portraiture. The 15 is big and heavy, so
as the landscape lens I set focus according to depth of field required
and view only for framing.

RE: Camera bag for bike trip?

2010-05-16 Thread John Sessoms

From: Christine Nielsen

Hi all,

Since it's never too early to start planning my next gear purchase,
I've started obsessing on how I will outfit myself for our vacation in
August...

Our trip will include 4 days of tandem touring around Durango,
Colorado. I'm trying to figure out the best way to bring my camera
along. It will be a somewhat minimalist kit -- my k7, plus a lens or
two... no tripod, no ginormous zooms. A backpack is one option, but
I'm curious about handlebar bags and/or panniers... I know there are
some cycle enthusiasts out there -- any thoughts?

Don't have any answers for you on the equipment side, but if you want to
photograph the Durango & Silverton Railroad while you're in the area, I
can suggest a couple of good spots. Just plug the numbers into Google
Maps search and it will show you where they are.

37.490801,-107.804923
This one is good for the morning leg outbound. Both trains stop at
Rockwood Station about 500 ft east of here. This is a good spot to catch
the engine as it comes out of a deep cut.

37.788635,-107.668571
There is a closed down mine at the end of Co Rd 31. If you stay away
from the buildings and equipment, no one should fuss at you. Gives a
good view of a low trestle the trains will be crossing in the
afternoon/evening heading back to Durango. You can get right up to the
edge of the trestle, and if you don't mind COLD water, you can wade
across the stream and get good shots of the approach.

Don't know how bicycle friendly the trip from Durango to Silverton is,
it climbs from about 6500 ft at Durango to 10400 at Coal Bank Pass.

Of course, it's all down to individual taste - much as the appreciation
of a photograph. The music sounded chintzy and very low quality - not
technical quality - rather the quality of the piece. It is basically
elevator music. But as I say, you get what you pay for and indeed if you
don't pay at all, then that's even worse ;-)

The quality of the photographs far outstrips the quality of the music -
the music (far from complimenting the photographs) actually detracts
from them (all of this in my humble opinion).

Viewing photographs with music attached becomes a personal choice - for
instance, I'd much rather look at something with the Doves blasting away
in my lobes than, or maybe nothing at all. When one chooses music to
impose of a viewer, one has to be very careful in selection - simply
choosing something 'that will do' is not good enough - and can (as I
say) detract from the experience.

However - that said - it is very difficult to choose copyright-free
music of a decent quality and suitability from (say) the internet. Which
is why most people will just grab their favourite high quality music by
famous artists and bung it up onto Youtube. In this case, most choices
are good - because the quality of the piece of music is excellent (by
commercial artists - well most of them!). Of course, you might think
that a copyright-free piece of music is perfectly good - and that's fine
because I have a volume button :-)

If you're putting together an AV presentations professionally or don't
mind spending a few groats on music in an amateur capacity, there are
plenty of low-cost options on the net. The one I use exclusively is AKM:

because they have a consistently good hit rate of keepers.

HTH Boris and take it all with a pinch of salt. You know that you should
make things just for yourself and if someone else likes it also, too bad ;-)

Aesthetically pleasing, but those houses take a LOT of land.

I'd love a place like that, isolated in some woods. There might be closet

There's quite a dissection of that particular house on line somewhere.
Not a pleasant place to live at all.

RE: Cleaning Sensors

2010-05-16 Thread John Sessoms

From: frank theriault

Or more specifically the sensor in my *istD.

Is this a do-at-home project or something best left to professionals?

If I can do it myself, how?

If I take it to a shop, what's a reasonable price?

My personal choice is to leave it to the professional. I'm afraid I'd be
a little ham-handed and could end up spending a LOT more for repairs.

If you're going to attempt it yourself, start here:

http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/index.html

Forty to fifty dollars USD is not unreasonable IF the shop does a good
job. I had it done once a year.

The problem is finding a shop that DOES do a good job. I wouldn't trust
most chain stores (like Wolf/Ritz).

Nikon/Canon offered cleanings at $40 per at the CNPA (Carolinas Nature
Photography Association) annual convention, and they would take all
comers, Nikon/Canon or not ... up until this year when Nikon dropped out
and the Canon rep would only do Canon.

Don't know yet who I'm going to go to now.

I sat on this one for a while, not really knowing what to do with it -
for several reasons.

First of all, there's that silly "no cropping film especially from my
rangefinder" rule. I've since realized that while it's not my
preference, sometimes it just has to be done.

Second of all, that background, especially the ads in the window of
the used/discount computer place was pissing me off.

But there's just something about the look in the kid's eyes, the way
he's hiding his face behind the truck, his whole body language that I
find very compelling.

Then I realized that those signs are part of this story in some way.
Distracting they may be, but they say something about the
neighbourhood where this was taken.

I'm walking down Parliament Street in Toronto's Cabbagetown late in
the winter when I see this kid with his father. He's playing with
this truck. I start chatting and compliment him on the toy. He tells
me that his dad just gave it to him that day. I ask him and his dad
if they'd like me to take a photo of the boy and his new toy and both
agree.

Hope you enjoy:
