Makes it a bit better.

All in all, a nice set of photos.

I like Freezepour, but don't care for the sepia toning.

Liquid Antidote might be my favorite.

I'd also recommend having your bookmarks stored elsewhere if you work on
multiple computers. I rolled my own web-based bookmarks manager a few years
back and still use it every day. I just keep a tab open with my bookmarks

contains four of Maier's wide brimmed hats and items from her personal

the still existing Central Camera on Wabash Avenue. Maier is reported as

Room two displays all black and white photographs mostly taken

reflections in either glass or metal, and two are shadow self-portraits.
The museum case in room two includes three of Maier's cameras, most

And, it is nice to known that I inspired you. Sometime you have to look

As for bag problem I partially solved that with the DA limiteds and large

Hi Everyone: Probably not a good idea to do this after DagT's ultra

course, but mainly by the discipline requisite for such a project. As I
mentioned when I first joined the PDML, I'm flawed: I like geese, and my
degree of discipline needs to be enlarged.

Of course, as you all are probably thinking right now, the decision to
commit to PAW led to a camera bag problem. As you know, I am a girl, and
girls carry purses; I've never carried the kitchen-sink variety, but I am
woman enough to feel better when my few items are neatly organized in a
fashionable purse that's comfortably totable. But since returning to
photography 4 years ago, I've had nothing but a camera bag-and-purse
problem--one that leaves me cursing the gods and glaring at cute puppies
and small children.

And PAW presents yet another unique camera bag problem. I needed a bag
that could tote my purse stuff and a camera and single lens because I
want to carry a camera with a single lens everyday. And it has to be
sleek and slim and some what fashionable--though I didn't have my hopes
up for much fashion.

Well, I found the what seems to be the perfect bag, and I'm all
giddy--the Domke F803 camera satchel. Oh my gosh, am I happy. Here it
is:

Hi Dan: I like the cheerful expression of your subject, and it's nicely
sharp with some good catch light in his eyes. (The left eye looks a little
sleepy) The white balance renders a bit blue on my monitor--and as the
saying goes--YMMV. Also, the frame shows a bit dark; I wonder if upping the

I will get there by the bye, but I'm still waiting on my slides to come
back from Dwayne's. They haven't arrived here in Asheboro yet, but I
might have used my Raleigh address. I have to go home and check the mail

I want to take a look at them before I decide what to submit.

My monitor is correctly calibrated. In fact, it's new -- the iMac 27 -- but
basically the same contrast level, brightness and tonality as my previous
monitor. Just better detail. My prints from the R2880 match the images on my
monitor.

Do you calibrate? Do you set contrast with a gray scale? Not picking on you,
Jack, but I suspect you have something out of whack. Then again, it might just
be a matter of subjective taste.

As it happened, I did get a Super Program (Super A, actually) after I
got the P50. The Super A was, indeed, a far superior camera but I
carried both around for many years and used both equally until I
eventually went auto focus.

I always thought that the P50 was intended to be a middle of the range
camera and that Pentax were probably working on a high end "P" body when
the auto focus boom arrived to put an end to that. I've got no evidence
that that was the case, of course

The seller has 100% feedback. The local pickup thing means that it

Eric, I've been shooting digital since August of 2004 - although still
shooting film with my LX.
Between the chemicals, my back and my declining ability to adjsut to
rapid changes of light, I no longer
work in the darkroom...

I shoot in color, and convert to BW in Photoshop if I think it suits.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel -- and 2 years ago I got an adaptor (thanks
to Cotty) to use my old Pentax primes on it
So I could legitimately claim Pentax equipment for the Annuals.

I had tried a DL early on and didn't like it. Couldn't really , still
can't) afford to be spending money loosely on equipment.

So it is my first bw with the D and one of about 40 photos I shot this
weekend with the D and the 24-70 sigma auto exposure

lens that Steve leant me too.

Except for about um less thaan a year in the nineties, I never had a
Pentax with an auto focus lens.

Since I'm pretty sure that the Flex board in the K-7 is the same as that
in the 645D, (it would only make sense from a cost perspective), and the
A lenses are supposedly electronically comparable from K mount to 645
mount, Pentax could easily implement such a thing in a future higher
level K body much as Nikon has done with their higher level bodies with
their older lenses. I'd pay a little extra for a K-3 with that
capability. Probably even buy one before a major price drop for it.

Re: My last roll of Kodachrome

Joe,
Some of us have film in the freezer already.
We don't need Kodak to produce more to justify processing.
I expect Dwayne's had a full few DAYS of processing to do.
They claimed last run was 12/30, but I suspect 12/30, 12/31, 1/1 and 1/2.

IF you save the machine to process Kodachrome, and IF you convince someone to
produce the chemicals used in said machine, you then have a situation where all
the KR film in the world is out of date, so you have to beg Kodak to set up a
production line that's been closed, and probably scrapped, so they can resume
production of a film that was discontinued for lack of sales.

Good luck!

I'd be willing to buy a brick of the film if the price isn't out of sight for
both it and the processing. I may not shoot it, but I'd freeze it, just in case
I feel like it.

I was planning to buy an E-3 when the E-5 came out, to take advantage
of remainder pricing, etc. But the more I looked at it, the more the
E-5 seemed worth the extra money. This is my main camera for the
foreseeable future. When I bought it, it was $600 over the price of a
new E-3. I'm very glad I went for it ... It's a superb camera.

Amongst other things, the E-5's improvements to Live View operation
and the SD second slot (instead of that useless xD slot) are alone
quite useful. The in-camera level, user focus calibration, better LCD
display, etc etc are all major plusses. The added resolution (10 to 12
Mpixel) is good but small, however the improved acutance and dynamic
range, and improved sensitivity, are excellent advantages over the
E-3.

E-3 used and new prices have plummeted since the E-5 was released. If
the E-3 is sufficient for your interests, you can get one in perfect
shape for as little as $600 on the used market.

You can just leave the aperture ring on A and change Tv and Av with
the single ring. You have to depress another button to change the
other setting (It's in the manual). I used to just use Av mode and
use the back dial to change the aperture. Again, see the manual.

actually I rather like changing it with the ap ring as long as it works.

Btw I finally figured out why the cRV batteries wouldnt go in right... I

Yeah I know I need to read the manual... but the info only sticks if I

Duh? whas dat? not familiar with the legend - probably because I've not
been shooting with
Pentax DSLR stuff .

The original size of the unedited color image says...
3008 x 2008 at 72 ppi and 41. something x 27. something inches

I resized to 15 x 10 inches at 300 ppi.
I was shooting at ' *** L " setting

There is still much for me to learn about the settings on the camera... one
minor annoyance is it isn't telling me the shutter
speed in the exif data. I know I was shooting really fast and almsot wide
open and at 400 ISO .
And maybe because the lens was Sigma it didn't tell me the ap in the little
window on top. I kept forgetting that i needed
to move the ap ring on the lens - which isnt so with the Canon rebel.

And, it is nice to known that I inspired you. Sometime you have to look

As for bag problem I partially solved that with the DA limiteds and large

Other than to clear film out of a couple of camera bodies, I haven't shot
film since late '04.
There's very little I miss about film and given that I'd have a computer

The pluses of digital far outweigh those of film (if any).

Is a P5 worth anything?

2011-01-09 Thread Luiz Felipe
well, the P5 is quite an interesting camera with the drawbacks listed by Brian
below. The 50mm in question looks like either a K or M 50mm, and the price is
rather interesting - a clean one in BR goes somewhere between $70 and $130.

I'd rather an A/ FA 50mm myself, actually. I'm quite happy with my m50 1.7, but
sometimes being able to work in auto aperture would be very interesting.

Well, the 50 1.7 is certainly worth $30, if it's in good nick.

I liked the P5 (P50 here). It was my workhorse camera for quite a few
years in the 1980s/90s. I always liked the look and feel of it. It had
its limitations (no manual setting of ISO; no TTL flash; no manual
shutter speed, so without batteries it was cactus) but, for what I was
doing with it, those things weren't important to me. I still have it.

Cheers

Brian

Re: What to charge for a friend's wedding

2011-01-09 Thread John Celio

?> Quite a number of sound ideas and advices so far, so I might

only add: beware of Murphy. Of course, you are welcome to
keep reading the rest.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Just to clear a few things up:

- If I could own a K-5 (or K-7) before the wedding, I would, but I don't
think I can afford to yet. I am going to borrow a friend's K-7 for an event
I'm shooting in April, so I should be able to learn my way around that body
design easily. Back at my old camera shop job, I had to learn new cameras
very quickly to be able to sell them, so I'm not too worried it.

- My K10D is woefully inadequate for shooting weddings. Horrible noise in
low light coupled with back-focusing with nearly all my lenses, I am so
frustrated with the damn thing I rarely take pictures at all these days. I
will bring it as a backup, though.

- I've shot a wedding before and did alright. I explained to the bride that
I am not a professional, but she seems okay with that. She doesn't want an
album or any fancy editing, so I'm not looking to charge much.

I like the idea of finding out what low quotes she got, so I might just ask
her about that.

Thanks again for the advice,
John

Yeah I already discoverd that... it can't slide show even canon raw

the jpgs to slideshow it.

But not to worry.

When you plug your CF card reader into your USB slot, it shows up
as an external hard drive (probably drive E:).

E is occupied with a 500 gig hard drive :-)
however F is what comes up...

If you've got things set up so that Zoom Browser gets started
automatically to try to transfer files, don't worry; just exit
out of Zoom Browser.

No not automatic...

Go to "My Computer" (probably there's an Icon for this on the
desktop; if not, you can get there easily from the "Start" menu).
You'll see a drive there in the section "Drives with Removable
Storage" - click on that and you'll see the drive. Your images
will be down a couple of levels of folders (probably called
DCIM and Pentax100).

I found it but it doesnt say "drives with Removable storage" anywhere...

Once you get there, you can drag-and-drop the images (JPEGs,
PEFs, etc.) to wherever you want them to be on your hard drive.
You'll then be able to open them up and look at them with any
editing program, the Pentax browser software, or whatever.

actually I selected all then copied them into a folder I made with the
date...

It went so fast I thought only one image was copied!

I had a ton of choices to make when the computer recognized the card
reader...
I just had been selecting things before that didnt work.

Thanks, John...
Now I can shoot raw!

While I'm eternally grateful to my friend, I'm hitting some snags

So here is my problem... the loaner is an ist d - and I have the

I couldnt make things go with the card reader. the computer

I need to get the PEF files on and then I imagine I can open them

Well, the 50 1.7 is certainly worth $30, if it's in good nick.

I liked the P5 (P50 here). It was my workhorse camera for quite a few
years in the 1980s/90s. I always liked the look and feel of it. It had
its limitations (no manual setting of ISO; no TTL flash; no manual
shutter speed, so without batteries it was cactus) but, for what I was
doing with it, those things weren't important to me. I still have it.

I expect that the zoom isn't really worth anything, and the 50/1.7 is probably
worth the $30.

Luiz, I am quite confident that you will not be disappointed by the
performance of the K-r.

The first 5 of these are hand held, ISO 3200 between 1/6 and 1/13 second. The
next 10 are using the 540 flash bounced off the ceiling at ISO 200, and the
last two are with the K-x at ISO 2000:

Besides, a K-r in your hands will take much better pictures than half a K-5 in
your savings account.

The sensor is not capable of LV or video. Which is a distinct loss in
the case of Live View (which is a superb innovation as it turns your
DSLR into a miniature view camera, complete with a built-in magnifier.
Absolutely awesome when working on a tripod).

Personally I could care less about video. Ditto for in-camera
processing and its multiple variations.

Ironically I've come to feel the same way about digital as you do
about film. I still shoot some digital (Event work and the occasional
desire to shoot for myself) but I keep going back to film for my
personal shooting. 159 rolls last year and I expect to shoot more this
year.

You certainly can walk around taking pictures with a 67. During the
brief period I had mine I shot about 20 rolls handheld and 3-4 rolls
on a tripod. Got good results when shooting handheld.

I'd still recommend a Mamiya 7 or GS/GSW670 for the dedicated handheld
shooter but the 67 can do it just fine.

When I got my K-x, I did not at all care about the video, but I've found it a
pleasant surprise. I find that there are times when I'm photographing an event
and realize that it would be handy to have video of it, and it's nice to be
able to just use the camera already in my hand. I've also been blown away by
the quality of the video that it takes.

These are the video equivalent of snapshots, done by someone who doesn't know
video, under challenging light conditions:
http://www.youtube.com/user/henryofarad#p/u

In short, I find Video to be handy a couple times a month. LV would be handy
if it worked a bit better, and it would be very handy with a swivel monitor.
I've never even tried the in camera processing, though I once did try the in
camera HDR.
