Re: The right zoom

2011-02-09 Thread Leon Altoff
Hi Paul,

Before the 60-250 came out I was looking at replacing my 50-200 Sigma
lens. I took a memory card into a shop and did some test shots with
the Pentax 50-200 and 55-300 and neither could convince me to change.

I am however very happy with the 60-250. I got mine by having CR
Kennedy price match what I could get it for from BH. At the time
they were retailing in Australia for AU$2900 which was far too much (I
think they are about AU$1300 now).

It's a heavy lens but it's worth the extra weight when you want the
quality. The others don't come close.

Leon

On 9 February 2011 12:47, Paul Ewins paulew...@optusnet.com.au wrote:
 Hi folks,
I'm looking for a zoom to complement the 17-70/4 which I recently
acquired to replace the 18-55 kit lens. I'm looking for quality optics
without huge weight or huge price.

If the 60-250/4 was a little cheaper and a little lighter it would be a done
 deal, but it isn't.

Weight will probably also rule out the 3rd party 70-200/2.8 lenses. I already
own a manual focus Tokina 80-200/2.8 and it is larger and heavier than I want
 to carry around all day.

I also own the 18-250 which is a great compromise for travel, but I want
something for when I don't have to compromise as much.

The contenders seem to be the 50-200 and 55-300 (although I don't know if
they are actually an improvement over the 18-250) or one of the FA or F
series of which the F70-210 seems to be the best. The 50-135/2.8 could be
regarded as an outside bet, but I'd prefer a longer zoom range. Ideally
Pentax would have a compact 70-200/4 to complement the 60-250/4 but they
don't and neither does any of the 3rd part manufacturers.

So,  what say you - DA50-200, DA55-300, DA* 50-135, F70-210 or something that
 I have managed to overlook.

 thanks,
 Paul

Besides, I'm waiting until all bodies made before week 50 in 2010 have
reliably been cleared out of the the system. We keep seeing reports from
people getting replacement cams with spots.

There remain a number of minor issues like the front-focus prob which is
of no concern to me because I don't use autofocus and there are still
too many mushy trigger buttons and unreliable rear thumbwheels. Not to
forget those mysterious stabiliser hick-ups in combination with the live

There is no doubt Hoya-Pentax have a massive QC problem. I suspect
serious underfunding or extreme profit pressure. It's sad to see how all
the good work done by the Pentax engineers is ruined by those controller

My lighting setup this time was to use the big white lighting with a
reflector umbrella off camera to the right.  With a big mirror along the left
wall, I got more than enough fill. If anything I think that the light was a
bit flat. Though with most of my subjects being middle aged, that may not
have been entirely a bad thing.

Artistically, I'm not entirely thrilled with the photos, but that wasn't the
goal of the production line environment. The goal was to get at least a few
that each paying customer would like, and I didn't have time for any sort of
equipment tweaking as I went along.

Comments, feedback and helpful suggestions welcome.

I don't want to burn out the marketplace, but I do want to build a market.  I
was thinking of passing up next month, but the theme is mardi gras, so  I may
see if I can do something with more dramatic lighting and a black (unlit)
 background.

There are some amazing photos in there!

What exactly is the front focus problem? I performed the autofocus fine
adjustment for the K-5 and all of my lenses. While some required minor
adjustment, the K-5 came closer as-delivered than either my k20 or K-7. And
those lenses that did require adjustment were pretty much split between front
and rear focus tweaks. BTW, the two lenses that required the most adjustment
were the FA 50/1.4 and the FA35/2. The DA* lenses were very close to dead-nuts
right on.

It's sad to see how all
the good work done by the Pentax engineers is ruined by those controller
 boneheads at the Hoya HQ.

The spot problem isn't so bad that I couldn't use the camera. I'm just
waiting for things to settle down a little so I won't be without a
camera for well over a month which is the current waiting time for an
exchange through Pentax Germany.

I understand. Well, I hope too that given the current situation, I'll
score a brand new camera produced after they've fixed their fabs. At
worst I can always print the official statement from Pentax and go pay a
visit our local service. They are known to be reasonable.

Besides, I'm waiting until all bodies made before week 50 in 2010 have

Well, replacement cams are on particular service conscience, so you know...

My understanding that FF problem happens in only some of the cameras and
under specific lighting conditions. And I read on PentaxForums that
allegedly Pentax is working on firmware to solve this. So, this is not
as fatal as stained sensor. I think I used live view less than dozen
times in 1.5 years of owing K-7, so that is not a big deal. As for
wheels and buttons - so far I haven't had any problems (knock on wood of
my head...)

That, unfortunately, is almost certainly true. Even if the number of
complaints is exaggerated by forums and other public media outlets, it
is still not making Pentax any good and I do have full trust in Pentax
engineers, whereas I have full distrust /grin/ in, well, let it be
politically correct this time, certain other departments of the company...

Paul, my (limited) understanding is that under incandescent light (I

other lighting conditions with same lenses, etc. I don't dwell too much

Well, weight is an issue for me as well... but I would also like a zoom with

Well, it has to be said that I read someplace in regard to cell phones
that you cannot buy now on the market a perfect device. Either it will
malf, or it will hickup or it will loose its exterior appearance (peeled
finish, etc), which in case of cell phones is a bummer. So, methinks,
would be the case with cameras too.

I'll have to test the K-5 autofocus under tungsten when I have time. I didn't

kind of light, I would think that might be something that could be fixed with a

Same here. But a number of people who had been looking forward to put
the K-5's excellent noise and dynamics to good use in no-flash indoor

have more impact if you went to a lower, flatter angle with them.

Photographing the dance portraits last Saturday was an interesting
experience.  I think that I did eleven photo sessions over a span of about
four hours, which would have been fairly strenuous even if I wasn't
desperately trying to convince myself that I didn't have a cold.

was thinking of passing up next month, but the theme is mardi gras, so  I may
see if I can do something with more dramatic lighting and a black (unlit)
 background.

Actually in a building less than a block away from where the exhibit
will be. Looks like a fun activity but I'm likely only available Mon

If you're in the Atlanta area, or plan to visit any time soon, I just
got an email from the High Museum of Art that they'll be running Henri
Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century 19 Feb 2011 through 29 May 2011.
There will also be a free, but limited seating, lecture on HCB by Peter
Galassi, Chief Curator of the Dept of Photography at the Museum of
Modern Art.

Maybe some of us living in Atlanta could get together to see the show.
For me, it's likely to be late March or early April before Ill have a
free weekend to go see it, since racing season is starting up.

More information is available on the museum's web site at

Ken,

Dust inevitably gets into the camera and onto the sensor, no matter
what you do. You may never see it if you shoot near wide open with
fast lenses all the time, but if you want to check whether you have
dust on the sensor, point your camera at a white wall and make a
couple of exposures at f/22.

I check for dust (even with the FourThirds equipment and its SSWF
cleaning business) every time I'm going out to shoot stuff that I'll
be stopped way down on the tripod with a clear sky. First times I did
it with the 10D and *ist DS, I was horrified how much dirt that I'd
never seen before was on the sensor! Sticking with f/1.4 to f/2.8
lenses and shooting near wide open most of the time simply masked it
from view.

Congratulations.

That PPG software sure sucks, every time I try to look at your photos
it takes me back to the entry page. The entry page, I note has two
pictures by Ken Waller and two by Paul Stenquist.

They seem to rotate those... when I looked just now there was one of
Paul's and one of Juan Buhler's
and I've always been annoyed that they distort the images on that first
screen.

Those images that appear in the first screen were early images submitted that
were chosen for 'the collection'. I have five of all my images selected in that

e
the PPG interface is so bad that I no longer even try to use it, not even

Yep.  It's a really common problem with technical documentation.  They
(usually) tell you 'what' and 'how'.  Rarely to they give you any idea of
 'why' and 'when'.

It's a difficult thing to keep in one's head while writing
documentation for complex technical subjects. We tend to get caught up
in the trees and forget to consider the forest and the landscape in
which it sits ...

I make a point of actually writing down, for each element of a system
I'm documenting, four basic questions:

  What is this?
Why is it important to know about it?
How and When is it used?
  How is it implemented?

Having those four questions in front of me as I work my way through a
mass of engineering notes, design specs, and bug reporte, many of
which may be way over my head – totally opaque! – at first, keeps me
focused on explaining to an audience what they need to know in
language they can understand.

Someone wants to play with post processing one of my photos. They
can't, however, read K-x .pef files in PS-3.

I don't know if PS-3 can even read a DNG file, but is there a way to
tell LR, or PS, to save a copy of this one raw file as .dng? I don't
want to (at the moment) convert my whole library to .dng, I'd just
like to save one file as it.

Photoshop 3, Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements 3?

Photoshop CS3 can read DNG files.

I know Photoshop 3 cannot, and I don't think Elements 3 can.

Photoshop CS-3 or ...? All versions of Photoshop CSx with Camera Raw
v2.4 or greater installed can read .DNG files.

Both Lightroom and Camera Raw (any version that can read your K-x
files) can export any .PEF file as a .DNG.

I was running Photoshop7 when Adobe announced the free .DNG converter.
PS7 could read .DNG files, but I can't remember if I had to download a
plug-in from Adobe to make it work.

At the time I was shooting with the *ist-D and had selected TIFF as my
file format. PS7 opened the TIFF files from the *ist-D with no complaint.
