My First PESO - 30 years late

2012-11-03 Thread Kevin Thornsberry
To the best of my knowledge, I've never submitted a PESO. But today, I was
testing a new scanner and pulled out an old notebook of slide sleeves from
pictures I took in Brasil almost 30 years ago and came across this picture
of Rio de Janeiro. It's not a great picture and I just happened to be at
this location at this time so I can't even claim much intent, but it warmed
my heart for a few reasons:

1) For some reason, I didn't originally care enough for the picture to
remember taking it. The slide was a little darker than this which is
probably the reason. Now I get to rediscover it.
2) It revived a memory.
3) I took it with my first "real" camera, my Pentax K-1000. Since then
I've owned a P-3N, ZX-5N, *ist-D, K-7 and a K-5. I still love that K-1000
most of all even though the K-5 is a much more practical tool for my needs
and entertainment now. I still love to hear the shutter of the K-1000. It
has such a satisfying mechanical combination of a click and a clunk. The
K-1000 now sits, retired, on a shelf over my desk, in a collection of things
that are special to me. I bought the camera with a bag, flash and a
50mm/1.8 lens in 1982 from a guy entering journalism school which required
everyone to have a specific model of camera.
4) I was too poor for a tripod so I know I took the picture handheld.

So, for those of you who still hold that emotional attachment to your
K-1000, or LX or ME-Super I'd like to share this oldie from my K-1000.

Hi!

Though I processed both shots by Galia, I've done so on her real-time
instructions. Specifically, the b/w conversion of the first shot was her
idea and the shot worked once we treated it to b/w...

Please have your brutal and honest say, but I think Galia outshot me

HI Everyone -

Been off list for a while. Just over a month ago we started a major
remodeling project and my wife and I moved out of our house and into
her late-mother's condo. I had expected to be in the house regularly to
use my desktop and access photos, but with contractors taking several
rooms down to the studs and re- wiring most of the old knob and tube, I
haven't been able to do anything in the house at all. It's a mess. So...
I'm working off a nice enough Toshiba laptop (5 year old Core 2 Duo)
that can more or less chug its way through processing with Photoshop CS5.1.

Here are a few autumn color snaps from October. Despite the drought, we
had a lovely fall in Michigan:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/a-little-fall-color

The biggest problem with this laptop is that a slight shift in the angle
of view changes the apparent brightness and gamma of the image, so I
never feel confident that the image is properly adjusted

I also got a little good news about my book, The Story of Snow. The
American Meteorological Society has awarded it their 2013 Louis J Battan
award as an outstanding book in the atmospheric sciences. More here:

http://www.storyofsnow.com

And I also learned that the book is being translated into Chinese. Not
sure when the release date will be - this is in addition to the Japanese
and Korean editions.

I hope everyone is doing well, especially folks on the east coast. I
finally put Thunderbird on this laptop and gave up on trying to read the
list via Charter's webmail, so might be able to keep up with the list a
little better.

Mark

Another pic from my streetlight shoot of last night. This shot was handheld, so
it's at 1600. But noise levels aren't necessarily indicative of normal camera
performance, because I had to jump through some hoops to avoid burned out
streetlights. Here I went with -2 stops exposure comp, then pulled back
highlights and white point more in conversion to bring the streetlight down to
a manageable level. I also pushed the shadows quite a bit brighter and
increased midrange contrast. That gave me a look that I think retained the
feeling of night, tamed the streetlight bulb and gave the other details plenty
of illumination. In any case, I like what's going on here with the people in
the restaurant and the overall mood.

Re: PESO - Yuriy

2012-11-03 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
These bikes have a fixed gear, meaning no freewheel on the back like most other
bikes. So you stop by slowing down the pedals just like a kid's trike.

Or you could lean forward to unload weight from the rear wheel, stop your legs,
lock up the rear wheel and skid:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn_qMrnMZpk&feature=youtube_gdata_player

But that wears out your rubber real fast and you just don't have as much
control. I only locked up in emergency situations; preferred by far riding
defensively and changing my "reflex" from braking to steering out of danger.

Thanks for the kind words about the photo.

Taken from the appropriately named Sunrise area of the park. Easily
accessible, yet over an hour drive from the campground, so it was up @

G'day Rick,

I did indeed smooth the skin in post. I'd be interested to hear if
others thing it's too much. I like to think I'm pretty judicious in
the level of smoothing I use.

Also I've noticed that the beauty dish used like this washes out the
skin which is quite flattering.

Thanks for your comments.

PESO - Late Dinner

2012-11-03 Thread Paul Stenquist

Aaah, why the fixed gear?

Well, Bob is right as to the advantage of gears.

Humans aren't torque monsters. Our torque curve peaks at high revs. If one
powers too much at low revs all you do is eventually blow out your knees.

Ideally we should be spinning at about ninety rpm. That's much faster than most
people spin when they ride but watch a road race like the Tour de France on TV
and you'll see that even in the peloton just cruising along they're spinning
quite fast.

Ride much and you'll find that a fast spin is much more efficient and less
fatiguing.

And, as Bob says, gears allow us to maintain that spin under virtually any
situation: uphill, downhill and on flats.

So why a fixed gear? Well, for one thing, the single speed is set so that we
are at optimal spinning speed while doing a fast cruise. So for me I might be
spinning at 90 rpm while doing about 40 km/h. I could spin faster and hit 50
km/h on a flat road, faster yet on a slope.

Going uphill is more work, but I think that one is actually forced to go faster
than a geared bike spinning in a slow gear.

It's actually harder going down hill because you're spinning like crazy trying
to stay still in the saddle and maintain control.

Since Toronto doesn't really have many steep or long hills we can just power up
the ones we have for a few minutes. Couriers do not use fixies in San Fran, for
instance.

The fixed gear means there is no freewheel; no coasting ever. It makes you very
manoueverable in traffic because you can accelerate much faster if your legs
are always moving.

Trackbikes have more vertical geometry and shorter wheelbases which makes them
very maneoverable in traffic (at the expense of stability in high speed turns).

Stopping requires technique as much as brute force. Move your body way forward
to unload weight from the back wheel and you can lock up and skid. I tried not
doing that except in dire circumstances. Simply anticipating traffic and not
putting yourself in sketchy situations reduces the need for panic stops. That
way simply slowing the pedals slows the bike, just like a kid's tricycle. Your
stopping distances are longer but as long as you ride accordingly you're okay.

Or you could add a front brake, but that ain't cool (even though probably
smart).

Trackbikes are lighter, sturdier and simpler and cheaper to maintain.

All that being said, I now ride a road bike (gears and brakes) due mainly to my
commute from New Toronto to downtown which adds maybe 15 - 20 kilometres to my
daily riding. That and my advancing years mean that I need to conserve energy.
Besides, I now think that what I lose in "quickness" is made up for with higher
top speed and speed going down hills.

So that's why a trackbike.

Thanks for the kind words about the photo. And thanks for all the other
comments and to those who looked. Glad you all liked!

cheers,
frank

Yes, nailed it, Frank. Crisp and contrasty courier and subtly blurred bg. Nice!

Since you mentioned speed and all: question. I though that the height
of bicycle techno-efficiency was reached with the addition of multiple
gears. So what's the deal with fixies? Does simple brute force win the
day?

I mean, bike/leg-power is most efficient within a range of rotations
per minute, so the gears optimize the coupling there. With the fixie
you must be standing off your seat at low speeds and reducing your
spinning legs to invisibility at high speeds. WTF?

Re: OT: Images of Sandy's Destructive Power

It's interesting to see how in a good many of these shots, the rendering, in my
opinion, is a distraction. The rendering obfuscates rather than enhances the
viewer's experience with the photograph.

With respect to content, the shot of the man sitting in his 100 year barn in
Connecticut is an amazing shot.

Thanks for posting, Dan. Cheers, Christine

HI Everyone -

Been off list for a while. Just over a month ago we started a major remodeling
project and  my wife and I moved out of our house and into her late-mother's
condo. I had expected to be in the house regularly to use my desktop and access
photos, but with contractors taking several rooms down to the studs and re-
wiring most of the old knob and tube, I haven't been able to do anything in the
house at all. It's a mess. So... I'm working off a nice enough Toshiba laptop

Re: After reading the K5xxx reviews ...

From: John Sessoms
I'm going to try to let this be my last response because it's gotten
really repetitious.

You make a valid point instead of just endlessly repeating that "it goes
to eleven". If I were "still stuck with a K10D", the K-5 might appeal to
me as an upgrade.

Although ...

I was out shooting with the K10D on Halloween, and it ain't that bad.

Practically any camera is capable of rendering a nice looking image.
It's all a matter of degrees of difference and shooting conditions. Of
course you realize that John, otherwise you wouldn't feel as you do.

I have an *ist D. I skipped the K10D and got the K20D instead, then
the K7. In retrospect, I wish I would have skipped the K7 and waited
for the K5. The K5 simply didn't excite me enough to upgrade from a
K7. IMO the K5 was what the K7 should have been and I didn't care to
pay Pentax twice.

That being said, I've switched to Nikon and Sony because I feel that
I'm actually getting significant improvements for the money spent. I
see the K20D through the K5 models as only offering incremental
improvements. It becomes difficult to justify laying down $1200 -
$1300 for new models with only incremental changes. Trying to quantify
(impossible I know), if a camera provides a 10% increase in image
quality or handling in some aspect over a prior model, why would I
think it reasonable to pay 100% of the price time and again?

Tom C.

Must ... re ... sssist ...

Ah what the hell.

I'd be a lot more interested in a D600 if I wasn't going to have to
replace all my lenses.

Clicking on one of the 4 thumbnails will bring up the photo. Clicking on

Guys, I agree 100% with the decision to disqualify the photo. The
rules of the contest limited the degree of manipulation and the
photographer admitted to not reading the rules very closely. He also
had submitted other images in different categories that permitted a
greater degree of manipulation and it appears he's fairly good at it.
There was £10,000 ($16,000) at stake as the prize. While the
photographer may have indeed innocently breached the rules, I find
that a little hard to swallow. If the first prize for winning was the
acclimation of "Landscape Photographer of the Year" and £10,000 would
YOU neglect to read the rules?

I think the whistle blower did a pretty good job of detective work
with the shadow direction not matching the god rays coming apparently
straight down from the sky. It's clear from some other similar shots
that a fair amount of cloning occurred.

What I find hard to believe is the choice for the new winner. It has
things to like but I would think that out of all the likely
submissions in the category... well beauty is in the eye of the
beholder.

I agree that the original image was a nice visual, it simply didn't
adhere to the rules.

WTF?

Great to hear from you. Bad luck about the eye, but it could have been worse
I guess. New York has been through a lot over the years - more than most US
cities, I reckon - and the people seem to develop a blitz spirit. The
character of the people gives the city its character, and it's this kind of
experience that makes people and places interesting.

2012-11-03 Thread Ann Sanfedele

stories to follow photos to follow but
in the course of things I managed to wound my right eye
have scratched cornea that happened Thurs night - the one onight I was
staying in powered digs with my BFF and husband . Ironically, on
Roosevelt Island

Don't expect serious disaster photos from me when I resurface
just wanted to tell you guys I was ok, powered up, etc and
soso happy they canceled the marathon - terrible it took them so long.

Re: OT: Film Humor

2012-11-03 Thread Peter Jordan
That reminds me of a lineI heard from someone involved in D&P during film days.

Q - How do you define an amateur film?
A - It has summer holidays at the start and end with Christmas in the middle
