Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
I think I subscribed to PDML in 2000 or 2001. It seems like the last couple of years, and especially the last few months the topic of other brands supplementing Pentax gear or just plain switching to other brands has significantly increased. Thom Hogan started a series called How to Choose a Camera (Intro with Homework) on www.bythom.com He starts with this: ...at this point in the digital era, almost all cameras are highly competent. At the DSLR level, image quality even with the entry models surpasses what most people could have gotten from film SLRs (assuming you understand the camera, what it can actually do, and how to make it perform optimally). As I've written for a number of years now about all DSLRs: if you can't get a good-looking image at the largest size a desktop inkjet printer can create (13x19), it isn't the camera that's the problem. Assuming your DSLR is not broken, it will be your decisions and your handling of the camera that are the gatekeepers on image quality these days. I don't disagree with him. If this is the case why so much talk of switching and other brands? Is it really all due to the lack of a full frame body? Is the increased talk of other brands really a trend or my imagination? RE: PESO - Wicked Pickett
Great shot, Paul! I love the wrinkled sidewall of the rear slick; indicative of the massive torque being applied to the wheel. I had no idea until recently that the changes in the diameter of those tires actually acts as a sort of de facto gearing as they contract in size during that initial acceleration due to the wrinkling then expand as centrifugal forces fling the slick tread away from the wheel. That actually changes the effective gear ratio. I also like that left front wheel in the air. Dragsters amaze me. At first blush it all seems so simple but the physics involved is mind boggling. I moved away from P back in about 2000 when all my gear was stolen. I had new-for-old insurance, but at the time Pentax did not have a coherent range of gear that interested me. If I had to buy from scratch now, they do seem to have improved a bit, but they still do not seem to me to have a well thought-out consistent range. Back in the old days they'd bring out a new line, say the A or M series, with bodies, lenses and accessories that satisfied entry-level up to advanced or professional standard. It all appears rather haphazard and piecemeal to me now, as if they're half-heartedly chasing the game rather than setting their own direction. At around that time I was also working as a contractor and had quite a high disposable income, so I could indulge myself in gear like Leica that I had always wanted. So in short, people's circumstances and desires change, the brand doesn't necessarily fulfil those new desires, so people move on. The factors you mention are not the only ones that determine people's choices. Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
There have always been defections on this list. Yes, they do seem to have increased, but for a long time Pentax was not producing new cameras fast enough, then they were not producing very many new zooms. That finally changed, although it took a while, and things have improved and now they have some very good cameras with good high ISO qualities and a FF coming out too. But maybe you are starting from the wrong assumptions. Just because this is the PDML (Pentax DML) does not mean all PDMLers have brand loyalty. Some have a lot, some have some, and some have a minimal amount. I think that would be the same everywhere, no matter what photography/camera forum one was in. Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
For me, yes it was the lack of a FF body, combined with the vast gulf between the D800's and the Pentax line last year. I've been yearning for a FF body at least since the Canon 5D, if not from the day I unboxed the *ist D. That, combined with the general recognition that Pentax has been historically slow to market for the past 20 years at least, made me pull the trigger. As some point one gets tired of waiting, and I reached that point last autumn. Prices on FF fell to the point where upgrading was expensive yet not out of reach. I agree with what Thom Hogan says also. However I don't think most people that switch brands think the new camera will *make* them a better photographer anymore than upgrading within a brand. The reason for switching or having multiple brands is varied. Foremost though for me is, the potential of what I might accomplish with new camera 'X', Y', or 'Z'. Having switched to Nikon I find the lens selection to be amazing. While some are pricey their performance is stellar, and there are a number of excellent performers that are not all that expensive.. I fall into both of your categories, as I also purchased a NEX-7 and a number of lenses. Easily DSLR quality and the camera bag with 3 lenses is 1/3 the size and weight of what a normal DSLR kit would weigh. Great for travel when I don't desire the extra bulk and weight. (RX-100 when I really want to go light). It's not that much different from film days is it? For me, at least, there was always the pent up desire to upgrade. After 7 years I went from an MX to a PZ-1p. Big difference there, with AF, matrix-metering, motor-drive topping the list. Then there was the desire to go larger with medium format. I don't do my own printing and usually desire larger than 13 x 19, so a higher MP body helps in that regard as well. I think he's mixing apples and oranges on the printing thing. I simply don't have the time or desire to fiddle-fuddle with the workflow necessary to achieve proper results when printing. Sometimes I wish I did, but I find it easier to send a file to a printer. I don't know about it being a trend. I think prices have dropped to where it becomes within the realm of affordability for more people, especially if there current brand is not giving them what they need. Tom C. Especially now that we are in the age of digital, and a lot of DSLRs are more similar than SLRs once were. I realized after I wrote that, that I sort of agree with what you quoted from Hogan. Which got me thinking a little deeper. The touchy-feely part of a Pentax camera: where the buttons are, easy of manual use (finger placement and movement), green button -- that a lot have liked on this list, a lot of the reason for Pentax loyalty, was probably a lot more important in a film camera. Now there is a lot of digital feedback rather than just manual feedback, so the touchy-feely part may have become much less important for some. Hmmm, how to put this? Before, SLR camera use was more physical/viscerial, and now, with DSLRs, camera use is really more mental/cyber-spaced. AND DSLRs do very similar things and have very similar features now. SLRs differed more. For instance, all have menus on the LCD, etc., etc. etc. I started in PDML in about 2000-2001 too, and switched between Pentax and Canon film and digital cameras, and that has been my experience, that SLRs differed more. And that the touchy-feely part doesn't matter very much to me now. Anyway, those are my broad, sweeping generalizations, if clear. HTH, Marnie aka Doe :-) In a message dated 4/13/2013 6:39:06 A.M. Re: PESO - Wicked Pickett
Thank Frank. It is amazing and a hoot to photograph. In 1975 when I was crew chief on a Corvette funny car, I had a tough time getting enough downforce on the rear spoiler due to it being too close to the back of the roof. That let the tires grow excessively. Once when the car left rubber tracks all the way front he starting line to the finish line, I could see that the 17-inch wide tires had only 3 inches of contact at the finish line. Consequently, we set a number of track mph records with the car -- 237 mph was its best. But the handling was atrocious, and it eventually crashed. A huge airfoil type spoiler like those used today would have made it work. On Apr 13, 2013, at 10:55 AM, knarftheria...@gmail.com knarftheria...@gmail.com wrote: Great shot, Paul! Is the increased talk of other brands really a trend or my imagination? There are several things going on here. First. the PDML might be more accurately called the Photography Discussion Mailing List, though sometimes lately it could be Politics, and it's frequently the Pun Digression mailing list. I think that most of the active people on this list are into Photography, and most of us happen to use Pentax. Even when people change brands they probably stay for a couple of reasons. First of all, we tend to make friends on this list. There have been times that it has accounted for a significant part of my social interactions, because other things have kept me too busy to hang out with my friends in meatspace. Another thing about the PDML, is that on those occasions where we actually stay on topic the discussions tend to be of much higher caliber than on any other photo list that I've seen. They typical scenario on other lists tend to be for people who have been doing photography for two years to be giving advice to people who have had a camera for two months. Just look at the work of just about any other discussion group, and compare that with the PDML annual. Hell, for that matter, compare the photos in the PDML annual with *any* collection of photos, particularly of disparate artists, and it will hold it's own. Camera technology, too, has changed. Any DSLR will give you good results, particularly with a decent lens, in good light. I doubt that most people could even tell the difference between an 8x12 shot in decent light with a Q and with a D800. The differences show up in difficult light and challenging situations. Do you need to shoot discretely in low light? With image stabilization on glass faster than f/2.8, it's quiet shutter, and remarkable sensor, you would be hard pressed to beat the K5-II, or even the K-5. If you are willing to give up image stabilization, the D700 and the 5d-III might have a slight edge, but they are significantly louder, and a full kit will cost you two to three times as much. However, there are other things other brands to better. But, times have changed, you no longer shoot photos in batches of 24 or 36 shots, where you are committed to a particular roll of film. So people don't generally have bodies loaded with different films, that they need to share all of their lenses between. You can make very good arguments for having body/lens combinations for different tasks. If I were a pro, or not saddled with house repairs and debt from several years of unemployment, I could easily justify different systems for different tasks. If I were to need a small EVIL camera for a certain type of photography, it could make all sorts of sense to buy a body and a couple of lenses specifically for that. Come to think of it, when I look at my film cameras I've got several Minoltas, and a range of glass. Likewise several Nikons and lenses. Since getting the Pentax DSLR, several of the lenses I bought came with film bodies. I also have an Argus, a Rollei, a small tub of various other rangefinders and polaroids that have shown up over the decades. I'm a photographer. Pentax just happens to be able to cover most of my needs for the least money. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
I think that would be the same everywhere, no matter what photography/camera forum one was in. I think Marnie has hit on something here. New camera models are coming out in rapid order with the evolving technology and marketing's need to present the customer with something new. Just like we've seen in the auto industry. Cars use to come out every 4 to 6 years with new models, now if the car design is 3 years old, its old. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: eactiv...@aol.com Subject: Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend? Especially now that we are in the age of digital, and a lot of DSLRs are more similar than SLRs once were. HTH, Marnie aka Doe :-) In a message dated 4/13/2013 6:39:06 A.M. Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
Can only chip in here with some random thoughts from my own personal perspective. I used Pentax film camera gear extensively from 1978 onwards. My first MX in 1980 was my proudest moment in gear - and it extended to my photography as I explored new lenses and techniques. I can truly say that that era for me was my most photographically exciting. A real buzz, and the gear helped a lot. Fast lenses and fast music, plenty going on and as I started into my TV career, the photography was able to boom with me. Much later, and another MX in the bag, and then various MEs and ME- Supers coming and going, and finally an LX! Manual focus all the way baby - it wasn't until after the turn of the century that I owned an autofocus body. But at some point I bought a ridiculously big Apple Quicktake digital camera http://news.cnet.com/i/bto/20090727/Quicktake_OVR.jpg and arsed about with it. Crude, like a child's toy, with awful results - but the fact that one didn't have to buy film - it was amazing. At this point, the only DSLRs available were Sony and Canon/Kodak hybrids at eye-watering prices. Some snappers I knew had them. Purely professional and nowhere near the realms of the hobbyist photog like me. And then, in 2000, Canon brought out the game-changer, the D30. http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/slrs/canon_eosd30 This was truly amazing - a camera that looked, felt and handled like a film SLR - except you didn't have to spend a fortune on filling it with celluloid. Instead, you coughed up the fortune in the purchase price. I wanted one. Desperately. But I thought I would wait and see what happened with Pentax. And sure enough - this camera was mooted by Pentax: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_MZ-D http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/prototypes/MZ-D.html Perfect! The MZ-D was exactly what I wanted. I had lenses that would fit it. (Sure, later it transpired it would have been a dog, but I would have had one in an instant, no questions asked). I was prepared to wait. And wait I did. I waited quite some time. The MZ-D was coming - and coming. And - Then a couple of years after the D30, Canon brought out the D60: http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/slrs/canon_eosd60 I waited a bit longer. I was beginning to doubt Pentax's ability to actually play the digital game. I had never doubted Pentax before. It was strange - I had grown up with the brand. It was uncomfortable. Sure they had point-n-shoots out, and even things that looked a bit like DSLRs (EI-2000!) but honestly - what the hell were those? Surely you bring out your best hardware first. The MZ-D! The flagship! The ones that the pros would buy, we'd all see them being used, then when the MX- D came out, would all buy them because we could afford them. That's the way it's supposed to go, right? It didn't seem to be going that way. I am sometimes given over to whimsy and so in 2003 I forked out over 2000 GBP for a D60 and kit lens. The following two weeks saw me with a grin that refused to leave my mouth. It was exhilarating. But, I hear you cry, why didn't you go for an *ist D - they came out in 2003?? In truth, the name and target audience of the camera didn't include my idea of what I wanted. I wanted the MZ-D - a professional camera targeted at accomplished photogs - not that I would ever include myself in that group - but that's what I aspired to. My choice. It seemed to me that Pentax had deviated from The Plan! Don't ask me what The Plan is, I can't really describe it. I only know it when I see it, and the *ist D was not it. I reasoned that even if Pentax did bring out the MZ-D or similar, that would be some time away - and Canon had an upgrade path already out there - the 1D series (out in 2001). I could keep on waiting, or I could go now. I thought - hmmm we'll go play with Canon for a while and see what happens with Pentax - might come back, who knows. The D60 introduced me to 'proper' digital photography, and for that I am grateful. It was very 'plastic' and made strange creaking and groaning noises. But it handled well and got me into the game. I sold some K mount lenses and the LX to fund some Canon glass. I kept my old MXs and my best Pentax glass. Just in case. In the ensuing years, I sold the D60 and got a 1D mark II and had a few Canon professional lenses (24-70/2.8L and the 70-200/2.8L IS and 2 or 3 others, plus flash - even a Quantum Turbo battery - fun!) It was great fun and I was well into it for a few years, but then I kinda fell out of love with photography. I was all tooled up but I lacked Clarity of Purpose. So, on another whim, I got an Epson R-D1 and 3 Voigtlander lenses - to see if this would make my Purpose and Clearer http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/epson-rd1.shtml and lo! Suddenly I realised that I didn't need bags of gear to make the pics I liked making - so sold all the Canon gear and kept the Epson. Fantastic camera! It had a winding lever to cock the shutter! Brilliant! But my

Sure, technically any camera will do the job, but this discounts ergonomics or a particular camera's bias towards being somewhat better at certain things that the photographer places more importance on. Of course, people will switch brands simply because one brand leapfrogs another one slightly. Often though, these people only take pictures of charts. bill -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Many things to like including the JPEG engine, It just didn't seem that it was a finished product though (none are totally), and when dpreview reported that it had AF issues in low light and would lock up, requiring cycling the camera power, that sort of put me off. I ended up getting him the NEX-6 (which he still hasn't received for our anniversary gift-giving). It's not a perfect camera either, but I felt more confident, having both a NEX-5 and NEX-7 myself. I also thought the NEX-6 had a better feature set and better ergonomics than the XE-1. I hope you love the X-Pro1 and would like to hear what you think and see images after purchase. Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
I should add, following the line of thought, that any/every camera is capable in the hands of one who knows how to best use it. The NEX line was a better choice for my son because he most likely will use it in a PS mode, but it has capabilities beyond, and I already have a number of lenses and adapters. He's going to school for graphic arts, and is into drawing mainly, but is being forced into the world of technology even there... which he didn't expect. :) On Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 7:23 PM, Tom C caka...@gmail.com wrote: From: Bill anotherdrunken...@gmail.com I want a camera with a fast standard lens, it's something I have long complained about with Pentax digital. I considered both and ended up with the X-E1 rather than X-Pro1. That 35mm is oh my goodness. First impressions. Fuji does great packaging. The 35/1.4 is about the same size as the Pentax 35/2.8 macro. It is VERY nicely built. Similar construction to the LTD lenses in that it's all metal on the outside, but inside it feels like all butter construction. Definitely head and shoulders above the LTD lenses on feel, about the same on looks. The body is pretty utilitarian looking, actually, and it seems big for what it is. It does feel good in the hand, and it seemed easy enough to use. The images are sweet. Even wide open, the 35/1.4 is exceptionally sharp, and the bokeh is quite nice in my very cursory look. Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
I still really like my K-5 and if I were advising someone which SLR to buy, I’d say the Pentaxes are hard to beat for price-performance, as long as you don’t really need the FF, which I suspect not that many really do. Except for, I wouldn’t advise people to buy an SLR these days, mirrorless cameras are where the innovation and excitement are, and I’ve had nothing but pure pleasure from my Fuji X-E1. Which I suspect I also would have had from an OM-D or NEX. -T On Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 6:38 AM, George Sinos gsi...@gmail.com wrote: I think I subscribed to PDML in 2000 or 2001. Re: An excuse to do some more informal lens comparisons
Interesting results. I am surprised by the 50mm f2.8 macro - I never had that lens but figued ti would be really sharp.0. Is the Sigma you tested the f2.8 lens or another? I once did a detailed test of 50mm primes including my A 50 f1.4, M50 f1.7 and Rikenon XR 55 f1.2. The results were that I eventually sold the Rikenon (I held out till I needed the money though) and opted for an FA 50 f 1.7 for auto focus. Not the detail of the side switch on top and the bottom connector. #1 Sigma 70-300 DG APO zoom at 70mm. With that much extra length I would expect it to have more information. Still, it is also at one end of the range so images are often softer. Yes, this is dead-center in the image. But it's all there. #2 Pentax DA 18-55 WR at 55mm. Not as sharp as the Sigma, but not too bad. #3 Pentax-F 50/1.7. The best of the batch. Almost wish I'd not promised it to someone. But that's ok. #4 Pentax FA 50/1.4. The worst of the batch. I tried several shots to see if the results would be consistent. They were. I'm disappointed. It's not bad; it's just not as good as I'd hoped. #5 Pentax-A 50/2.8 Macro.Again, several shots to check to see if I'd done something wrong. As before, not as good as hoped for, though certainly acceptable. Ok -- resolution is not everything. Having done a bunch of LF I have a greater appreciation for image rendering than for resolving power. But since rendering options are not available concerns on miniature cameras, resolution is the only question available. I was pleasantly surprised by the Sigma. It's a good zoom, though certainly not a great one. Next I'll take it outside and check the corners at various lengths. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
Pentax has gone through a lot of changes in the last decade. In the late 90's Pentax offered a lens lineup that was easily on par with Canon and Nikon and offered a lot of specialty items. On the long end - 600mm f4, 400mm f2.8, 300mm f2.8, 400mm f5.6 - and short end - 15mm, 20mm autofocus and the F 17-24 fisheye They also had an excellent range of macro lenses and enjoyed full third party support from Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina. But they missed the transition to auto focus bodies big time and were playing catchup in camera bodies, particularly WRT AF and evaluative metering. Today the the lens lineup is much weaker, though it is improving. Pentax still lags on bodies though at this particular moment in digital camera design that is more in regards to sensor format and megapixels. If and when I can't get Pentax gear to do what I want to do, I'll switch brands. I spent a bit of money on a replacement for my A*200mm macro lens a while back, but it was a calculate decision. I set my top purchase price at something less than the cost of a comparable Nikon or Canon body, their 200 or 180 macro, and flash and other essentials for a new system. For me, that analysis highlighted the costs that come with switching. Making a total transition from one system to another, if you are seriously invested in lenses, bodied and flashes, is very expensive. Selling your old gear and buying new is expensive. Trying to maintain two systems is even more expensive. If one is lightly invested then it makes sense to move on. Or start a second system. For me, buying into the Q system is really just going iwth a second system since there is only limited overlap with the core Pentax gear that I already have (mostly wrt flashes.) I am hoping that we see something out of Pentax - Ricoh that tells us that they are serious about the K-AF mount and it's corresponding glass. I really don't care if they lag the market regarding FF dslr, but let's face it - the day is not far off when FF will be the consumer standard for DSLR. The most worrisome thing that I can interpret form Pentax Ricoh's comments on FF DSLR's is that they may think that FF is a passing fad. That would be delusional thinking - something that the old Asahi Pentax might have indulged in but Ricoh is a much smarter and hardened company. After all, Ricoh was one of the first significant film camera manufacturer to get out of the film business and switch to digital only. These days, I am just shooting as a hobbyist and all my needs are met with the glass I currently own and the bodies I currently have. While I want new toys and would love to have a full frame dslr, I don't need one and am happy with the images I get from the K5. I didn't give a damn about the poor AF and AE Metering of the PZ series of bodies back in the 90's either. But I am reluctant to continue to invest in a system whose future is up in the air. I would certainly never buy something like the DA 560 unless I knew what body would be around to use with it in the future. There is a lot of uncertainty regarding Pentax's future direction regarding bodies and glass. They seem to be aware of this and the lens roadmaps appear to an attempt to address that. A road map WRT bodies would be even more important. Mark On 4/13/2013 9:38 AM, George Sinos wrote: I think I subscribed to PDML in 2000 or 2001.
