For instance they'd never heard of evaporated milk let alone know to look for

You made me look that up. It's called dehydrated milk around here, and
it has an awfully long shelf life (read: very few people ever buy it).

We were brought up on RAF bases where there were lots of old bomb shelters and
water towers to play in. We used to find stacks of rusting old tins of
condensed milk left over from the war, and we would use them as bombs, throwing
them from the tops of the water towers, or against the brickwork of the air
raid shelters.

In those days a bowl of tinned peaches with condensed milk was a luxurious
healthy treat.

It can be used to make dulce de leche.

Generally when I think of dehydrated milk I think of the powdered
product. It has the most gawdawful flavor when reconstituted. I have
never been able to find a way to mask or remove that powdered milk taste
to where I can drink it without gagging.

Evaporated milk is still a liquid.

quite the same thing.

PESO: Thanksgiving Turkeys

I used the DA35 exclusively at our Thanksgiving dinner this year. It sure
makes the K5 quite unobtrusive compared to the massive 16-50!

It doesn't seem like much until I notice that it's so dim in the room (and the

Pentax AF-500FTZ Flash on K100D

2013-12-05 Thread Glen Berry
I'm strongly considering purchasing a used Pentax AF-500FTZ, mainly for
off-camera strobist style shooting. As I understand it, the unit has a
built-in optical slave which should work fine for manual-mode, strobist
style shooting.

I'd also like to us this flash in the hot shoe of my K100D, which only
supports P-TTL mode. I know that I'll have to use the AF-500FTZ in
manual mode to control the exposure. I'm fine with that.

Do any of these other AF-500FTZ features work with K100D:

Focus assist light?

Strobe (multiple burst) mode?

Second-curtain sync?

Ready light in viewfinder?

I appreciate any information you can share about this particular
combination of gear.

When I was in the RAF, our Sunday evening tea (made at 4.00pm so the cooks

sugar it was made with evaporated milk and loaded with sugar - it was
awful! But, it was the only drink available on camp, unless you went to the

We were brought up on RAF bases where there were lots of old bomb shelters
and water towers to play in. We used to find stacks of rusting old tins of
condensed milk left over from the war, and we would use them as bombs,
throwing them from the tops of the water towers, or against the brickwork of
the air raid shelters.

In those days a bowl of tinned peaches with condensed milk was a luxurious
healthy treat.

It can be used to make dulce de leche.

Re: Pentax AF-500FTZ Flash on K100D

2013-12-05 Thread Bruce Walker
Zos, you'd think so, but it doesn't seem to do that except in specific
circumstances with specific flashes. I can't get it to work with
simple radio triggers for instance, and I've tried it on both my
K100Ds and K20D. Haven't tried on my K-3, but I wouldn't hold my
breath.

It does work with my AF540FGZ flashes, but only if the flash is in the
hot shoe on the camera, not with the Pentax wireless flash protocol.
It's quite vexing as I really wanted to do light trails stuff on a
number of occasions.

I even tried it with the X-sync socket on the K20D thinking that
they'd treat that as a very simple circuit -- nope!

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not

Geso: The dracaena's progress

2013-12-05 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Mostly of interest to the horticultural set, probably.

I made a little gallery for last year's and this years pix - a page of
twelve thumbnails on an index page shouldn't be too daunting.

This evening at 5:30 about the time the heat comes up, I got the
fragrance ... glad I'm not allergic to it!

They are in order by date and time..

http://annsan.smugmug.com/On-the-Road-or-On-Foot/Just-the-Dracaena/35187260_2phjkL

Last year the first fragrance was right on my birthday - it's a little
early this year. Never expected it to bloom again.

This has just been such a joy to me - not being known for my green thumb
at all!

We're the worlds best at making milk powder - it's one of the staples of our
economy. I recently heard that something like 50% of all the milk powder that
China imports comes from NZ.

The problem I have with this is that the local price of dairy products started
to skyrocket a few years back.

New lens to from Samyang: 10mm F2.8 ED AS NCS SC

2013-12-05 Thread Igor Roshchin

A new fast wide-angle rectilinear lens will be available soon for Pentax
cameras: 10/2.8 from Samyang. Unfortunately, it will have only manual focus.
It's also relatively heavy...
It might of interest to some people here.

That really is quite interesting. I would have hoped that Pentax would
produce something in this focal length as they are still all aps-c.

That really looks chaotic, would have been a fine entry. I also like

 Still along the Big Sur.
The first was shot with the 645D and 120mm macro.
To catch the other situations I had to use the K-5 and Sigma 500mm.
