Re: DxO recommends lenses for the K-3
Hi Rob, Can you focus it properly? This is the main problem I've always had with Sigma lenses on Pentax bodies: when you adjust focus for a given focal length, you get a gross focus error at other focal lengths. This was the reason for selling my Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS HSM in a month and even the 70-200/2.8 shows that problem to a certain degree, so that I had to adjust it for something between 135-200mm and use the DA* 50-135mm below that. PESO 2014 - 001 - GDG
I'd moved to Southern California in March 1979 to attend school at UC Riverside. Never liked the place. My friends in New York had shipped my old Ducati 750GT, named "Bruno the Magical", out to me. Once school let out, I gathered up everything I owned, shipped what I couldn't carry to a safe haven, and jumped on the old Duc never to return to Riverside to live.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto/11847428014/ This is a photo of the Ducati and my mascot, Gerard the Giraffe, east of Barstow, stopped by the side of I-15 heading to Zion National Park, due south of Death Valley. I didn't notice that I'd assembled the front fender backwards until I changed tires in New York several weeks later... Thanks for looking! Comments always appreciated. Re: Geso Moments
Ok , here goes.. given the order they are in. The cyclist going by the hotel is a nice slice of city life - though kinda bland to me. The one with the strong shadows would work well except for the large shadow on the left.. yet cropping that out alone leaves some imbalance - might want to play around with various crops - certainly worth the effort - nice mood and ironic juxtapositioning :-) Noting Locust street sign. I really like the rest - except the last one is a bit too light. 29, 30, 31 - just perfect, IMHO. although I don't know if what grabbed you about them is that same as what grabs me - which is the Brave New Worldishness - the lack of humanity in those scenes.. the antiseptic atmosphere. The loneliness conveyed in the one with the man and boy on the escalator. The last one just repeats the theme but not quite as well as the others do , for me. not sure why.. Now this is one time when I appreciated flicker more than smugmug. Obviously you have shifted from "legacy" to "new" smugmug - don't like your choices here for presentation - those oversized thumbnails , the journal style instead of an index page, and the slideshow didn't run properly on XP.. I'm seeing how much I'll have to struggle with smugmug to facilitate the look I ant for my stuff -which is somewhere between what I have now and what I think of as ideal.. Hope this is of some use ann On 1/8/2014 15:37, Don Guthrie wrote: A small gallery of photos taken in the city. I am a little off the reservation with these... in style and process. Re: Geso Moments
Don, in this type of architectural/street I look for simplicity, so for me the strongest two are -29 and -30. -30 is pretty cool. Were it my choice, I would reframe/crop -29 to eliminate the dark ceiling -- ie focussing on almost entirely white with lines & curves. (But I think it would require a reshoot to be most effective: backing up and moving to the left; do you see what I mean? Frame in as much escalator and wall as you can.) Still, -20 in New Hampshire, where that kind of thing is not *that* unusual, isn't as big a disaster as 20 in Atlanta where they're not. Re: SV: I have committed a book
Jostein, Did you make the book using the blurb software? Or did you make it in lightroom, indesign or something else that will let you export a PDF copy? It's an excellent collection of photos by the way. I suspect that 1) You could just print them up and have a show ready to go. 2) You could use the book to advertise photo trips to California and the SouthWest states. How many people signing up would it take to finance you for a trip? Set up several consecutive week long trips that people could sign up for whichever ones they wanted/could afford. I suspect that photos of Sunny California (tm) would make for a very attractive travel brochure in Oslo, sometime around March. Goodbye Cameras
Hi Bruce & Boris Sirs, New Year Greetings. Pentax does not use optical plastic elements in their K- mount lenses including the 18-55 kit lens or the cheaper primes. Yes they do use plastic in the Aspheric lens elements. This plastic is deposited over the glass lens in ridges. Hence aspherical elements do not have a perfectly smooth finish over the lens curvature as in pure glass lenses. But due to manufacturing or material defects, some aspheric lenses have shown separation and damage between the plastic and glass interface in the form of fogging - like if you lightly sandpaper a clear glass sheet. Some very expensive lenses do not use plastic deposits on aspheric lenses at all. Instead each ridge is cut and polished in the glass itself. This explains why such lenses are very costly and why they are so sharp too. Regards. Re: PESO: Eye on the Ball
Thanks, Alan. Yes, he is built for the cold. Over the past several days, we have had high winds and temps below 10 F. He is invigorated by the cold, and want to stay out and play longer. In this image, I had been throwing that soft ball. and he was retrieving it and then running around the yard with it. Here he has dropped it for me to pick up and throw again, but he is staring at it so that he can snatch it away at the last moment in order to tempt me into chasing him. He is disappointed that I am not willing to stay out in the cold for more than 15 minutes at a time in this weather. We leave Monday for 4 weeks in Maui. He will spend that time in a kennel owned by friends of ours in Carmel, NY, near Newburgh. He has a great time up there, playing in the cold and snow with the other dogs, but is always happy to see us when we come to pick him up and take him home. SV: I have committed a book
It's a deadline for books that do not sell any copies. An author ordering his own copy will cancel this deadline, so one sale is enough for Blurb. However I already have an author's copy with some slight design mistakes. They are correted in the currently available version, but I don't bother buying any more copies for myself. Boris, it's possibly no coincidence that the Pentax kit lenses are actually very good optically (esp. the 18-55) where the Canikon ones are apparently just disposable.
