Still, -20 in New Hampshire, where that kind of thing is not *that* unusual, isn't as big a disaster as 20 in Atlanta where they're not.

Heard a lot of that in 2000 when we got that freak storm that dropped 20" of snow on Raleigh.

"Twenty inches ain't nothin'! We get that every winter."

Yeah, you do. We don't.

I was in New Hampshire (the Upper Valley) that year, and as I recall,
we had temps below -20 a few times that winter.
Brutal indeed.

I was out and about here in NYC when it was 4 F with 25 mph winds at times.
But I grew up in CHicago and lived in Maine for 3 years where
that was not so uncommon. The absolute coldest I've ever experienced
personally was -40 F in Orono, Maine in.. um I think 1961-1962 season.

Today I was very carefully dressed in layers, to top layer being a
jacket I bought back in 2004 at a thrift store near GFM - as the weather
was somewhat less hospitable than I had anticipated.

Intended to stay in today, but I had to collect a friend from a medical
procedure or they wouldn't let her leave. TOtally unnecessary
over-precaution but we had a nice lunch and visit.

I think it went down to around -30c here in Toronto last night.
60km/hr (around 40mph) winds made it feel colder than -40C. (-40C =
-40F). I have about a 2 km walk home from the bus stop at 1am.
Luckily the wind was at my back. It was cold. ;-)

That's quite dangerous. If you're walking back that late because of
working then they have a duty of care to pay for a taxi or something.

I find it hard to even comprehend temperatures like that. The coldest
it's ever been here was about -6C about 10 years ago. And that was just
for an hour or two around dawn.

The coldest I've ever been was at Mt Saint Helens last May - about -13C.

Warming trend starts late today - Mid-30s F by the weekend.

right now. I suspect it was quite a bit colder up Wheatfield’s way.
