Re: K10D malfunction
First thing to try with anything resembling contacts problem is to take a clean pencil eraser and rub the contacts on the body and lens (to clean them). You shouldn't need to make any eraser shavings, but if there are blow them off in such a way that you don't get them inside the camera body. That is enough to fix most contact related issues. Hope it works! On Fri, May 1, 2015 at 4:46 PM, Mark C pdml-m...@charter.net wrote: My IR converted K10d has started acting strange - basically it pretty much ignores any A, F, FA or DFA lens that is attached to it and treats them like a K or M mount. The camera will do nothing unless using aperture ring is enabled in the custom options. Even then, if the apeture ring (if present) is set to the A setting, the camera will not stop down the aperture while making an exposure or when the DOF preview is invoked. The camera does show the aperture and shutter speed setting on the LCD and allows them to be changed, and shows them changing in program modes, but it never actually stops down the lens to the shown aperture. The exif data in images shows the lens wide open in all shots, even when the LCD shows it stopping down. The camera correctly detects the maximum aperture of different lenses attached to it. At first I thought it was a mechanical problem with stopping down the lens - but if the apeture ring is moved off the A setting, or if a pre-A K mount lens is attached, then the camera works as it should. In manual mode it does stop down metering and (in manual mode only) it stops down the lens and DOF preview works. So the mechanical couplings work, it seems like the camera is unable to detect a lens in A mode in order to stop it down, though it does detect the lens's maximum aperture and shows that the aperture should be set to on the LCD screen Has anyone experienced something like this? Could this be something simple, like an issue with contacts in the mount? I like the camera and have gotten some nice images with it, but have actually taken only about 5000 exposures with it in the 5 years I've owned it, so the utility of repairing it is questionable. When I ordered the test print of the PDML Photo Annual I paid extra for express shipping which Blurb said would deliver it to me on May 4th. I don't depart for Britain until the evening of May 5 so I thought that even if it was late by a day I'd be able to manage. They sent me a shipping notice yesterday... and today's UPS tracking tells me it'll arrive on May 6. When I'm in London. So the Annual won't be available on line until after I get back on the 17th. Re: OT: RANT - Google Maps
Godfrey, As you well know, Google Maps (as all (most?) google services) are very much distributed. So the fact that you, in/near Silicon Valley are able to use it, doesn't mean that there are no problems on the East Coast or in the South. Brian, I am seeing it in the OLD version (12.17) of Opera (before they switched to the WebKit and it became a la Chrome). In that version, they didn't enable the new verison of the maps, and as far as I saw just a week ago or two, the Classic was still the default one (and the only one available?) in that browser. It looks like they have pulled the plug on the Classic design (presumably on April 29). The only way that I see the Classic design still working (in this part of the world) is via this link: https://www.google.com/lochp ( http://maps.google.com/?output=classi doesn't work anymore) I am actually suspecting that the unresponsivenes of the new design is in part because they disabled the old one recently, and while the new one is heavier, it is not as scalable, and the servers are overloaded. Re: computer woes and advice needed
Ann, Don't worry. If there are other reasons to buy a new computer, - go for it. PS. And as a few others have already written 4GB memory is fine. It is sufficient even for PS and LR. I have been using this much on my laptop for the last 4+ years. So, that refurbished HP is probably fine. Note that that offer expires tomorrow, May 2. But I would think hard about buying the Dell that you mentioned. It's hard to say which model it would be (there are several of them), but if it is under $400 new, it might be an older model (might be even with a Celeron CPU, which would be rather sluggish), and it might have a _32-bit_ Windows 7. LR-6, if you'd ever decide to upgrade to it, does not support 32-bit OSes anymore. So, whatever you decide to buy, you probably want it to have a 64-bit Windows. Ann, There was a joke about a nouveau riche guy who comes to the Mercedes and wants to buy a new S600. The sales person asks him: - What's wrong with the one you bought yesterday? - The ashtray is full. If the only problem is that you cannot sign in websites, I wouldn't jump into buying a new computer. When you are trying to sign in, what type of error are you getting? You wrote: somehow Avast is involved. Are you getting an error that the certificate is incorrect and is it where you are seeing Avast mentioned? Are you able to sign in into Thunderbird? At the very least, I would suggest trying two things: 1. If it is only a problem with the browser, - I'd suggest installing another browser (I don't know what you've been using, but try Chrome or Firefox). 2. If the error mentions Avast (we can try to troubleshoot this, if you want), - you can uninstall Avast (Control Panel - Add/Remove programs - uninstall Avast) and see if you can log in again. Then you can try to reinstall Avast. (I assume you are using the free version of Avast.) Couple of months ago, I saw that the 2015 version of Avast created a problem for Thunderbird, but not for browsers. Re: OT: RANT - Google Maps
John, While Google maps are loading very slowly today (you broke it! ;-) ), I can see the satellite images.. I am not sure if you meant some particular scale that is not available... As a matter of fact, it is the map itself that doesn't load, while the Earth image does. Here it is: http://goo.gl/4Pwq9W But I was not able to find them by name, only via the coordinates that I got from here: http://goo.gl/TBJCSR When I was trying to find these island by name, it just wasn't loading anything (or rather showing the last place I searched for). I actually was able to find those by name - just now, some 10 minutes later. And it is in the correct place. I suspect that their map database is experiencing difficulties. Maybe everybody is trying to look where Baltimore or Nepal is. HTH, Igor John Fri, 01 May 2015 13:09:51 -0700 wrote: Has no one at Google ever heard the expression If it ain't broke, don't fix it!? K10D malfunction
My IR converted K10d has started acting strange - basically it pretty much ignores any A, F, FA or DFA lens that is attached to it and treats them like a K or M mount. Any thoughts about what might be going on would be appreciated. Mark --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast!
