Re: PESO - The Protestor

2015-11-24 Thread ann sanfedele
It took me a while to figure out that the photo is of the head of a dog
next to a pup that looks like a german shepard, or a mix
and her pup...possibly supposed to be a wolf? certainly not a fox,
mink, sable, etc. animals that would not be harvested for fur garments..
so what doesn't work so well (regardless of which side of the arguement
you are on ) is that the poster maker appears not to have known
what animals are used in making fur garments... and sadly that the
protester is probably clueless in that regard as well...

I don't think there are 47,000 doggies trapped annually

From a compositional point of view only, I'd like it to be less tightly

cropped..

2015-11-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
VERY interesting, Don. Thanks for sharing.

It seems to me that those boats are canoes, and that they are paddled,
like the outrigger canoes we use in Maui, rather than being rowed,
like the shells in my images from Dartmouth. The two forms of
propulsion look very similar from shore, but are actually quite
different. Especially with the sliding seats used on racing shells,
rowing gets most of its power from leg and back muscles, while
paddling is all upper body work.

Subject: Re: PESO - The Protestor

You said "no store sells fur". I found one that does. I didn't say Holt
Renfrew in Toronto sells wolf coats. I was making answer to a very specific
statement you made.

That being said, most wolf fur sold is ~not~ for coats, it's trim. There's
every possibility that there are coats in Holt's with wolf trim. And even if
there isn't, they do sell fur. That's what the protest was generally about,
the sale of any fur. Their placards educated about the fur industry as a
whole, including coyote fur, which is far more commonly sold.

Why are you getting so hung up on details? Does that diminish the protest
for you in some way, if you feel can find a few inaccuracies or
inconsistencies?

By the way, kudos on playing the "traditional Native lifestyle" card! Now if
we really gave a crap about their lifestyle we'd enforce broken treaties and
give back stolen lands.

BTW most fur isn't trapped by natives. Or from North America. Or even
trapped. The vast majority of pelts sold are from European and Asian fur
farms. Just so you know...

I was shooting in RAW+ so the JPEGs are pretty irrelevant (didn't LOSE

What in the heck did I do so I can avoid doing it again? Any ideas?

Without seeing examples I'd be at a loss to even take a SWAG.

Hi Ann,

I am quite certain that's a coyote. They look a lot like German
Shephards - at least facially.

Here's a Coyote that lives in the lakeside park near my place:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2015/02/coyote-beautiful.html

Coyotes are often grey or brown.

According to:

http://www.respectforanimals.co.uk/facts-and-reports/statistics/103/

47,340 is the total number of coyote pelts (presumably combined trap
and ranched) that Canada "produced" in 2,009, the last year reliable
figures were available.

As for the composition, thanks for your thoughts. I have many more
that are wider, I felt that the tight shot on this one added impact.

I'll post another one tonight. Perhaps you'll like that one more. :-)

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

cheers,

I'm not sure who doesn't know fur. The protesters I talked to seemed very

I don't find either racoons or foxes to be pests. I got to know a mom 'coon and

oh a Coyote! - . missing the color and just seeing the head I didn't
recognize himor add him to who I thought the canine might be..
I've photographed themin Alaska , kind of made friends with one there..
and also in the snow at Yellowstone back in 1989 too.

Don't have any on the computer ...

That's anice shot of the oneliving near you.

They are making quite a strong appearance in NYC actually these days,
not so exotic...

Had no idea they were ever used for fur though... just thought that
farmers and ranchers were after them because the coyotes were killing
their stock ... of course it makes sense ..

Romney is certainly among the top 1% of Americans in personal wealth,
but he has a history of charitable works and support of the
downtrodden. To say he is “for the 1%” denies his history. As an
equity fund partner he was involved in some takeovers and mergers
that provided mud-slinging opportunities for the Obama campaign, but
Romney's personal life has been exemplary and he contributes vast
sums to a wide range of charities. Most importantly, he doesn’t
suffer the ego problems and pettiness that have plagued Obama and
probably would have made a good president. His record of success

discounted sample kit from RedRiver

2015-11-24 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I know that some PDMLers are using Red River papers.

There is a special order for the sample kit of 23 different papers for
only $4.99 and free shipping (or at least it is free within Texas).

http://goo.gl/89xljX

However, note that you can not use this 8.5"x11" (Letter) size paper for
8.5"x11" prints. This arrogant company insists on printing the paper name
on the _front_ side of the paper (and does not say that explicitly for
this sample kit).

So, if you can cut it and can use [up-to] 8"x10" paper for something, -
this could be a good opportunity to sample their 8"x10" papers at a low
cost. Otherwise, you can use it for checking the calibration color profile.
Or, if all what you do with paper is just staring at it, you can "sample"
it that way.

Caveat Emtpor!

Cheers,

Igor

Coyotes and fur

Allow the populations of raccoons and foxes to go unchecked and you’ll soon see
how much of a problem they can be. Their natural enemies are in short supply,

They're dangerous pests, and their numbers have to be controlled. A hungry

Darren:

Yes, I realize it is not sold by Amazon, sorry, I wasn't more clear about
it. I actually looked for other sellers, including Amazon itself
yesterday, but somehow I missed those two that you mentioned.

And yes, it probably makes sense that this lens could be released earlier
in Japan.

Collin:
Yep, thanks for the explanation.
I actually knew about these three AF options.
I didn't know what DC in this case stands for, but I didn't expect it
to be "direct current" (and hence my comment about it).
I thought it was a mistake in translation, but it looks like this term
is actually used in the "official" descriptions. I hadn't see it before,
but now I see it in B descriptions.
I am still puzzled buy this term though: I am not aware of any AC being
used in cameras; so, all electric motors are using DC.

Pentax has 3 AF systems. The original gear drive, SDM, and DC.
It's DC as opposed to the other two.
IIRC, they have maintained a single interface to power both DC & SDM --
the

old PZ connectors.

Indirectly, through the parasites they carry (e.g. malaria & yellow fever)
mosquitos are actually very destructive. Keep swatting!

Would you hesitate to swat a mosquito that lands on your arm? It's a
sentient animal and far less destructive than a coyote.

Re: PDML ~ fate handed me a clementine

2015-11-24 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Bruce,

I am very much enjoying your recent series -- "studies".
Yesterday, while writing this message, I looked through your new gallery
website again, and I enjoyed the fun combination (or even juxtaposition)
of live models and mannequins. (Or should I call them womannequins?)

Now, here is what I've written yesterday about this photo, but didn't send
right away.

I am sure mine will be the only "dissenting opinion".

I like the technical aspects of the photo: the light, the setting,
especially how the lamp, light and shadows render.

I like the artistic aspects of the setting.
But a couple of aspects keep bothering me. Both are related to the pose.

First, the way she is slouched.
The combination (or juxtaposition?) of her look and the setting
creates some vibe that I don't know how to call. For the lack of a better
word, I'd use "power" (or a combination of strength and maybe even
intimidation.).

That slouching is neutralizing all of that.
But what do I know, - maybe that was the desired effect?!

For the second, I should share my childhood memory:
The very first film I shot in my life (B), - to start learning
photography, - included a few first shots of my father. He was took a shot
"straight on" at a relatively short distance.

To keep the long story short, - I had the obvious result to learn from:
what you get from the perspective... That's what I see kids are learning
quickly by shooting their own legs with the camera.

And the second association is with a backfiring compliment:
"Wow! You've got such legs! One is longer than the other!".

In this case, - the right leg of the model suffered that type of
"disproportional elongation".

And a minor thing, - I'd think that it would've been better without
that bright red in her "clothing". It clashes here with the setting (see
my first item above). Even though in many other situations, this red
would've been "powerful", here it seems out of the color gamma. It looks
like a piece of a backpack.

I hope these thoughts would be useful...

Keep it up!
(I mean your photo studies.)

Cheers,
Igor

They were protesting a store, Frank. What does this site have to do
with the store they were protesting -- or any of the legitimate stores
that PETA demonstrates against?

Quite frankly, there will always be wolves and other species that can
be hunted and used under certain circumstances, especially by native
peoples, Preserving their traditional life style is more important.

Re: Coyotes and fur

2015-11-24 Thread knarf
The bounty in Ontario ended in 1973. A few counties have an incentive or
compensation but it has been found to be ineffective. A Utah study found:

“Although several state and provincial case histories, including
Utah, are available (Bennitt1948, Latham 1951, Michigan
Department of Conservation 1960, Nielsen 1973, Theberge
1973), there is no documented evidence indicating that bounty
programs temporarily or permanently reduce coyote abundance
or subsequently reduce livestock depredation.”

Any shot coyote is no good for fur. And traps are not set to reduce the
population but to provide pelts for fur.

So I again ask, what's this got to do with the fur industry? Answer, nothing.
This is a red herring.

Cheers,

frank

Re: Coyotes and fur

No but I rode my bike to work, as I do every day. That does more for the
environment and my general health than hugging a tree.

Don't get me wrong, I like trees, but with the bark it just scrapes me and
neither of us feel better.

Cheers,

Re: PESO - The Protestor

2015-11-24 Thread knarf
You said "no store sells fur". I found one that does. I didn't say Holt Renfrew
in Toronto sells wolf coats. I was making answer to a very specific statement
you made.

That being said, most wolf fur sold is ~not~ for coats, it's trim. There's
every possibility that there are coats in Holt's with wolf trim. And even if
there isn't, they do sell fur. That's what the protest was generally about, the
sale of any fur. Their placards educated about the fur industry as a whole,
including coyote fur, which is far more commonly sold.

Why are you getting so hung up on details? Does that diminish the protest for
you in some way, if you feel can find a few inaccuracies or inconsistencies?

By the way, kudos on playing the "traditional Native lifestyle" card! Now if we
really gave a crap about their lifestyle we'd enforce broken treaties and give
back stolen lands.

BTW most fur isn't trapped by natives. Or from North America. Or even trapped.
The vast majority of pelts sold are from European and Asian fur farms. Just so
you know...

 Cheers,

frank

Romney is certainly among the top 1% of Americans in personal wealth, but he
has a history of charitable works and support of the downtrodden. To say he is
“for the 1%” denies his history. As an equity fund partner he was involved in
some takeovers and mergers that provided mud-slinging opportunities for the
Obama campaign, but Romney's personal life has been exemplary and he
contributes vast sums to a wide range of charities. Most importantly, he
doesn’t suffer the ego problems and pettiness that have plagued Obama and
probably would have made a good president. His record of success speaks for
itself.

Pentax has 3 AF systems. The original gear drive, SDM, and DC.
It's DC as opposed to the other two.
IIRC, they have maintained a single interface to power both DC & SDM -- the
old PZ connectors.

The styling division

2015-11-24 Thread Collin B
Looks like the styling section has picked on something.
I like the "barrel" (or "can") styling of the newer long lenses as opposed
to the conical shape usually associated with them.
It's easy to do a barrel with a slow lens but the 70-200/2.8 reminds me of
the Sony barrels.

Re: Pentax D FA * 70-200/2.8

2015-11-24 Thread Darren Addy
When you say "Amazon has it listed" you have to be careful because
Amazon may (themselves) not be the seller. In this case, the $3880
price is "Ships from and sold by TOKYO CAMERA / WorldWide Shipping."
People can (and do) make up all sorts of prices for items which they
don't have in hand.

Two other Japanese sellers (on Amazon) are offering it for $2474.49, shipped.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00T70TPQO/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8=new

It is possible that japan will see the lens before U.S. sellers (all
three seem to indicate a late December ship date) get their hands on
it, so some might pay a premium to have it a couple of months before
other U.S. early birds.

The Nikon lens that it is probably aiming to be the equivalent of is
the $2100 AF-S NIKKOR
70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. Canon's EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
Telephoto Zoom is just under $2K.

His record of success speaks for
itself.
