Thank you, Peter. Yes, my father had a habit of following the doctor's
advise only to the point when he would start feeling a bit better. Then,
he'd claim that he felt well, and hence required no medical care of any
kind. I still remember the fights between my mother and him when she had
to practically force him to continue a course of any kind of medication
that required minimal discipline from his part.

My father passed away at the age of 73, so he certainly could have
enjoyed few more years of watching his granddaughters grow...

2016-01-10 Thread Boris Liberman

Thanks you, Christine. Please pass my thanks to Darrel.

I am told that for the husband/wife of a person who just passed away,
the very first year afterwards is the most difficult one. My mother now
has a good deal of her own problems, where her breast cancer got out of
control of the pills that she's been taking for 5 years now. My brother
and I are frantically getting her prepared for the surgery... She's soon
to be 77 and she had triple bypass surgery in 2004, so she's not the
sporty kind, to say the least...

I wish you strength in 2016. I am sure I will need much of it myself.

Don't dilute the concentrate. It will keep for decades.

I mixed HC110 to order when I was processing film commercially. I used a
syringe to extract and measure enough concentrate to mix a tank strength
batch.
I was using a Jobo and so making small batches of fairly concentrated
developer, generally 500ml or less of either dilution A or B, so it can
be done, just measure carefully..

Re: HC110 preservation

2016-01-10 Thread Mark C
Seconding what others have said... the undiluted concentrate will last
for a long time. I had some HC110 that was pushing 7 years when I
finally used it up. I would migrate it to smaller bottles as it would
fit, but it spent a good bit of time with some air in the bottles. The
concentrate got darker and some semi solid sludge formed at the bottom,
but it still worked fine.I have never attempted to store the diluted
mixture - just mix it for one shot use using a syringe as Bill
described. I get larger syringes for dispensing cough syrup etc to
infants at the local drugstore.

Last summer I finished off the last bottle of Agfa Rodinal that I bought
in 2005 after Agfa discontinued manufacture of it. Same experience as
with the HC110 - much darker (almost black) and with some sludge in the
bottom of the bottle, but worked fine. That was approaching 10 years old.

FWIW - I have had much worse luck with old bags of powder developer -
the foil lined bags that Kodak used in the past - than with liquid
concentrates. Powders in cans and the newer plastic bags have been fine
though.

Good luck

Mark

Re: HC110 preservation

2016-01-10 Thread ann sanfedele
I used to separate the developer into several small glass bottles as
soon as I opened the big bottle it came in if liquid
or just after it getting mixed... filling those right to the tippy top
does the job and glass is inert. I was using dark brown

bottles that had held medicine.

Nice sharp shots - makes feeding the birds more fun.

I agree about the reflections, but from where the shot was taken, the
reflection of the top of the mast was obscured. Next time I go to

I had signed up some time ago for a Pixsy invite but apparently missed

and used the invitation. I am very impressed with their algorithm's
ability to find where your images are posted. I just fed them my
Flickr account and they (very quickly) about 25 pages full of links
with my image and the suspected image.

There were a lot of images that they found on places where I had
posted them (like forum.mflenses.com, pentaxforums.com, etc.) and
there were a lot of inexplicable false positives, they also found a
good number of actual unauthorized uses by businesses and
organizations. What was ESPECIALLY impressive was that their algorithm
found my image inside composite images that had been made by the
infringer, one case where the infringed usage of the image was
somewhat cropped, and another where it was used in a slider graphic
and faded out to one side (in otherwords, my image, but modified by
the infinger. This was pretty impressive!

You can submit a claim with Pixsy and they will negotiate a licensing
fee with the infringer and pay the photographer 50%.

However, since they are new, I can't find any info on how much those
negotitated fees might actually be. So for now, I plan to use Pixsy
simply as my "bloodhound" and turn the infringements over to a real
copyright/photo attorney. It may be slower, but I don't think
attorney's charge THAT much unless they actually go to court, and
being attorneys I'll bet they get higher amounts than Pixsy will. (At
least two of my infringers are pretty big name web sites).

In addition to negotiation licenses, you can also quickly issue a DCMA

Hope someone finds this useful.

That's how it worked for me too, Ann. I can't remember how long ago I
requested an invite, but it was long enough that I completely forgot

Re: OT - Lowepro Nova Sport 35L AW bag on great sale ($10 or less)

2016-01-10 Thread Ken Waller
My Tamrac 728 is the smallest backpack that will carry my gear. Handy that it
also can also be carried like a shoulder bag. I see people in the files with
packs 2 & 3 three times as big.

It's the only bag I use - don't want to be bothered with the hassle of loading
& unloading from one bag to another.

Off We Go for 2016! January PUG is UP!

2016-01-10 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all.

A flurry of last minute submissions resulted in the largest PUG for some
time. Great work!

Most adopted the literal interpretation of the theme but Igor had a
slightly different approach. Nicely thought out!

There were quite a few reflected buildings - all excellent but Dave
Brook's 'CN Tower' really appealed to me.

Bruce was up to his usual tricks - top work but a warning, the link to
the 'Entire Set' of images may be NSFW.

Others I particularly liked - Dario's sepia toned 'Woodpecker', Ken's
'Reflections from the Inside Passage', Pat's 'Old Glass' and Pete's
'(No) Reflections: Shooting the Shooter'.

Fantastic work, all.

As usual you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

+

Next Up: "Black and White".

Re: KEH.com changed their website once again and it sux.

2016-01-10 Thread P.J. Alling
Honestly no. But if they had a free form comments box, I could write an
organized critique, on the phone, I'd need talking points in front of me
and even then in the give and take some of the issues might get lost.

What real difference would it make. They paid a designer to update their
site. A complaint from an sometimes customer isn't going to get them to
roll it back.

I just visited again, and a link to the "classic" site has appeared,
that works. So I'll browse using that until it disappears.

The sad part is the last update from a few years ago actually made
things better for the customer. This seems to be a step backward and
sideways.

Yes, that's right I said it. Last time they made a change, I wasn't
happy, and used the proffered old style site as long as it was
available. This time they're not offering a "classic" view, and this
time they really need it. The new design looks good but navigation is
just awful. Before one could browse a category, and find things that
might be of interest without actually looking for a specific item.
The new site makes that much more difficult. I'd take their survey
and explain everything that's wrong with their site, but the survey
is closed, and they don't even give a link to an e-mail so I could
leave constructive criticism.

i've shopped the site several times over the years; as of a couple of years
ago, it was cumbersome but workable once i knew the layout; drilling down
into categories took multiple clicks, but it was certainly fun to shop by
category

i went today, and the "shop" hierarchical menu next the logo upper left
makes all those old categories available, and quicker to access than the
earlier design; once you get in, the "refine by" options seem the same as
the more recent design; what i miss most are the more compact lists they
used to have

i did notice a few weeks ago that their inventory seems to have shrunk quite
a bit

I agree. KEH seems to be losing relevance, at least for Pentax stuff.
The new site seems to lump all Pentax mount stuff together, which is
terrible. They don't even have a category for m42/screwmount on the
new site. The screwmount page is still there on the old "Classic Site"
link.

If you want to keep using them, it might pay to bookmark those old
category pages. They should continue to work, as long as they remain
up, since those pages are almost certainly a database-driven. ( A new
lens added to inventory should show up automatically in the correct
mount's category page).
