I had more books than I could manage. Tried to give some away to libraries and

Perhaps you never tried to do any real work on a first generation Apple
Macintosh.

Between the reacquisition and the loss of Steve Jobs, Apple did many
things well. They also did amny things that work well for some, and not
at all for others. When the first non-phone iPhone (iPad touch?) was
released, I really, really wanted to like the shiny. I tried, but I
couldn't. I've always found IOS to be incredibly frustrating and
counter intuitive.

At least with OSX I can get to an intuitive bash prompt.

There seems to be a real mother hen attitude at Apple, something that
Android and Windows doesn't have.
I think I got it working, but I had to break down and show it my

Hopefully now that I've let it control my life a little bit it will relent.
All this so I can have a nice screen (and the screen is VERY nice

it collect dust for a couple of years. I had heard incorrectly that
they couldn't be serviced, but I figured I would at least find out.
Turns out they can service them, but not in America. The round trip to
Japan was a month and a half and it came back looking like a brand new
lens along with my K-3. I took some test shots and after a little
focus adjustment it looks like the old 12-24 I once knew and loved.
They left me with the gouged up hood from where it hit the pavement
though lol. Think pentax wants me to buy a new lens hood? :)

This experience has tempted me to send anything outside of warranty
directly to Japan for service. It was $250 to rebuild the lens.
Strangely I don't think they replaced the rear part of the lens so I
guess my self repair on the stripped screw threads is holding pretty
well.

The K-3 from precision was another story. I sent them a K-3, a 20-40
and a 55-300, both of which were decentered. The 55-300 came back
decentered even worse. I had no hopes that they would fix my 20-40
properly. I complained. Pentax sent me brand new lenses that were much
better. The K-3 came back and the AF points in the viewfineder were
completely in the wrong place. I sent it back. When it came back the
camera was overexposing in daylight by about two stops. Something was
miscalibrated. Back it went that day. It seems fine, but I haven't had
any broad daylight to test it with. I would hope that they wouldn't
let the same problem happen twice.

Total repair time: 2 months. Not great at all. Not after all this time
they have had to get their act together at precision. I did get two
decent replacements for my lenses so I really have to thank Pentax for
doing that for me. I have been told by some people that things are
changing in that regard and that the service situation will be greatly
improved. I really hope so. This is the kind of stuff that makes
people ditch systems, especially working pros. Not having a 2nd body
for a long time really cramped my style and forced me to swap lenses
constantly which in the thick of things is the last thing you want to
be pissing around with and missing shots. My k-7 is passable as a 2nd
body in good light but that's about it. I wouldn't try to shoot an
indoors event with it unless I had some pretty fast glass attached.

Hoping for some sun this weekend. :)

FSF: Pentax LX

2016-04-22 Thread Miserere
Up for sale, my Pentax LX; it's one of the versions with ASA setting
up to 3200. It's in very good cosmetic shape, and was given a thorough
going-over by Eric Hendrickson maybe 24 months ago. The only problem
it has is the shutter release lock doesn't lock, and Eric says he
can't fix it (a sign of the Apocalypse nearing???).

For those that are still interested, note that it comes with the
original grip and strap (the important part being the bits that hook
onto the camera lugs). The viewfinder is the FA-1W model, with an
extended diopter adjustment range of +1 to -3 (and I include the
original tool to adjust the diopter). The focusing screen is the
SC-21.

Still interested? Make me an offer!

i've also had the K-mount Sigma EX 105/2.8 Macro and now the DFA 100/2.8 WR

FSF: My Pentax gear

2016-04-22 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

The FA 50/1.4 is sold. The DA* 16-50 is well on its way to another list
member who may find it useful, at least for parts.

So, make me an offer for the following:

* Pentax K-5, OEM battery grip, 1 extra OEM battery, magnifying eye cap,
slightly more than 20k shutter clicks

* Sigma 24-60/2.8 - I recon it will be excellent standard zoom for K-1
for fraction of a price of 24-70/2.8 and also a good bit smaller and lighter

* Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 - the non-SDM version. Would go as a very good kit
lens for the K-5 above.

* Metz 50 AF-1 flash - not the most powerful, but still powerful enough.
Tilts, swivels, firmware upgradeable via USB thingie...

* Assortment of Pentax lens pouches. If you feel like your lenses
deserve a soft bed :-), do speak up.

Non-Pentax, but related nonetheless:

* Ricoh GXR kit - camera body, AF 28 module, electronic viewfinder
(attached to the shoe on the camera), lens adapter to turn it to 21 mm lens

Be sure to contact me off list. This gear needs to sell.

Thanks.

Boris
