Thanks to all who looked & commented.

Larry, the light is usually very harsh around here. The overcast conditions
make a big difference but then there are no shadows.

A small herd of cattle which strayed into town in search of grazing. There
are several lush spots in this "park" irrigated by mains leaks. Actually
quite dangerous with no herdsman in sight. These are Nguni cattle, a very
tough (ancient) African breed, although I'll wager there is a bit of Brahman
blood there too.

2016-08-02 Thread Alan C
Bob, this should answer your question. Fly was only a problem in the Lowveld
areas down the east coast of Africa (like Kruger).

http://www.nguni.info/nguni_cattle_southern_africa.htm

In many tribal areas, the large bulls were castrated to yield enough oxen
for ploughing. This led to degenerate herds serviced by small bulls. Grade
bulls of other breeds were introduced to upgrade the gene pool. The
characteristic "speckled" hides are now less evident.

Very interesting shot. I didn't realise there were any native breeds of
cattle below the the Sahara - I thought tsetse fly got them all. I seem to
recall being taught something like that at junior school.

Ditto.

I never warmed to Lightroom. I use Zoner Photo Studio for image
management and open images for editing in Photoshop directly from Zoner.
It's a nicely integrated workflow that suits me well.

Several years ago, I was visiting Tom C at his home in Idaho. His wife
had what seemed like dozens of hummingbird feeders strewn about the
outside of the house. When I arrived, the noise of them outside the door
was really freaky, it was like running a gauntlet of locusts.
The morning I left, I was sitting having coffee with Tom amid these
literally hundreds of Hummers when one chose to alight on my hand and
stay for several seconds.
It was one of the most magical moments of my life.

I found that they are quite hard to photograph, I was using a K10 at the
time, and out of dozens of exposures, I managed to get one that I was
reasonably happy with.

Re: Hummer Freezing(?)

2016-08-02 Thread Bruce Walker
Jack, the blip of light from a 540 at 1/64th power should easily
freeze hummer wings, But I suspect you had enough ambient light to
compete with your flash. You need to cut out the ambient so the flash
is the sole source of illumination if you want to use the flash to
freeze action.

Try shooting the same scene both with and without the flash added to
see the effect. If you have the flash set up correctly the scene
without the flash should be black or just about.

Also, the flash duration (t.1 time) is really short even at 1/2 or 1/4
power on a 540 flash. I'd try shooting the birds with the flash at
about 1/4 power and with the head zoomed to the narrowest beam. Then
set the shutter for 1/180th sec (use X-sync), stop down the aperture,
and even attach a neutral density filter if the exposure at the bird
is still too high. This should eliminate the ambient light pretty
nicely.

I read that in the NYT this morning good article. I was delighted to
see it was written by David Brooks. Until I realized it was the
conservative political writer rather than our Dave Brooks. :-)

Useless factoid: One of my racing buddies who was on my 24-hour
endurance team years ago bears such a striking resemblance to
Frederick Douglass I sometimes still do double-takes when I see
certain photos of Frederick Douglass.

Just sitting down with a big lens and trying to track hummingbirds as

Yes, any shutter speed, above the native 180 per second with this

I agree, Jostein that it would seem
logical to expect the wing movement

Yes Ann, its not pretty. But I'm just interested in finding out how they
do this. Might be useful for something else, like a still life or

K-1 is great, although a little heavy when you walk 20km a day taking
pictures. The 2.8-zooms would be too much. The files are great, and I love
the two wheels and possibility to lock some of the buttons on the back. No
more unintentional adjustments of the white balance :-)

The Limited lenses were as expected, but I´m a little disappointed over
FA24 and FA135 wide open. Stopped down a couple of steps they are good.

For a break we are heading over to Norway to see the Oksne clan, and
yy I get to concentrate on still photographs, Pentax lenses even!

I gather there will be some news as well regarding the Eating of the Hat
ceremony. Can't say too much at this stage but there will be
photographic evidence, a veritable phalanx of Holy Men overseeing,
various onlookers and a contingent of vestal virgins ready to verify the deed.

Stay tuned and all will be revealed.

Allegedly.

I'd provide a live video link but Sessoms would still be fiddling with a

Re: Hummer Freezing(?)

The figure of eight is what I have read too. But I believe the wing tips
move slower at the sharp turns of the eight, so that there are certain
wing positions that allow longer shutter speeds.

When you do P-TTL, do you use Hi-speed flash mode? Probably a dumb
question, but I don't know the 540 flash (got a Metz unit myself).

I've shot exactly one session with those birds, a ruby-throated
hummingbird I encountered along the Big Sur in 2013. I remember thinking
that the wings would have to stop before they turned, and rattled off a
lot of frames hoping to hit the point where the wings switched
direction. That was without flash, at 1/1000s shutter speed. I had to
crank up the ISO to 1600 too. Hit to miss ratio was about 1:30, I guess.

The blossoms frame the bird well, and the curve of the lower branch adds a

The Eating of the Hat

2016-08-02 Thread Steve Cottrell
Sorry been a bit quiet on the list recently. Had quick looks at loads of
pics but not even had chance to post comments. We had a new boiler
(furnace) installed so 1 week of hell. And work has gone mental, so too
many hours holding a big camera on shoulder.

Allegedly.

I'd provide a live video link but Sessoms would still be fiddling with a
Windows install and we wouldn't want anyone to miss out.

Serious hummingbird photographers get liquid hummingbird food
(basically sugary water) for feeders and use an eyedropper to load it
into real flowers. Attracts the birds to a specific flower (at which
your tripod-mounted camera and long lens are aimed) and looks much
nicer than those ugly feeders.

Just sitting down with a big lens and trying to track hummingbirds as
they choose their own flowers is a good way to burn off a thousand
shots or so while only getting one or two keepers. Mind you, every
once in a while you do get a good one:

I don't have much experience maybe 4 or 5 ice hockey games is about
it. I used back then my D2H and 70-200 f2.8. I set iso around 1250 or
so, and did a custom WB on the ice. I tried to find an area for that
that was most of the ice surface. I shot around F3.5 and my shutter
speeds were in the 125 range. I did a lot of panning until the skater
reached the net area then i could single focus. Used the WB tool to
get something close to actual colour.

You gotta start somewhere Jack.

Moving them out from the structure on top of the feeder has got to help the
lighting situation.

A 'Better Beamer' is a relatively cheap fresnel lens that will help project
the light from your flash.

Photographing on ice

2016-08-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

... well, on a skating rink.

[Preamble]
About 9 years ago, I've started photographing in very challenging
conditions: dancers on a dimly-lit dance floor. That's when I had to
develop certain (new for me) approaches and tricks in the procedure.

And many of you have seen Larry and me discussing some of those.
I've given several workshops on photographing dancers and dancing so that
you would appear well on photographs, where some of the discussed topics
were related to the low-light tricks.

I should mention how great it feels after all that, to photograph in
bright-light conditions, where you can have much larger latitude in your
settings (i.e. choose what to bump up: aperture, speed, dial down ISO,
...)

[/preamble]

Now, here is the main story.
Recently, I've got new challenging conditions.
About 11 months or so ago, I've started photographing people on a skating
rink. Even though the light is usually not as low, I've found that it is
the condition that is also rather challenging.

The main challenges are with relatively wide dynamic range and with the
proper color balance.
1. The ice, and white sides of the scating rink produce a relatively
bright background. This makes it easy to underexpose the
skaters. And the ice doesn't seem to work well as a reflector, i.e. I have
to do "fill-in" in post for the faces.

2. The color gamma of the lights, and I am still trying to
understand this, - is somewhat strange. If I am photographing on AWB, I am
getting some color cast that I am having problems to describe. It is
yellowish (or greenish?), or at least it seems that way to me.

I suspect it originates from the combination of lights used in the arena.
And I am yet to determine (I keep forgetting to look carefully) what types
of lights (and accordingly, their temperature) they are using.
I am guessing it might be due to the mixed temperatures of light, or a
combination of the light temperature with the whiteness of the ice...
Maybe I am not diagnosing it correctly yet, - I am still thinking about
it.

And I've observed a similar effect on another skating rink, in Austin.
If anybody has had experience with photographing on skating rinks, I'd
appreciate your tips and thoughts.

Thanks,

It's on private property (the toll house resort) next to a busy street, the one

Re: Peso-Hard Freeze

2016-08-02 Thread Jack Davis
Thanks, Paul. I went to the shutter for a try. 6400 was the set shutter speed
in TAV. ISO was auto 2000.
I'd prefer to use the flash, but seems setting it to manual and increasing the
setting to 1/64 duration is, surprisingly,
not able to freeze the wings.(??)
When using the flash rather than shutter, I set the shutter to something slower
even though I don't believe
it matters.
What would you feel the flash duration would be at 1/64?

Again following the procrastinators guide, I made an image backup
before
starting. That went smoothly, even better than it did on this computer.

Forced a roll back to Windows 7 because Windows 10 just wouldn't work.
Lag time was incredible. Something as simple as a restart took over 30
minutes. There's not way to load into Safe Mode. I'm pretty sure the
problem was something in a video driver, even though I had a video
driver that was supposed to be good for Windows 7, 8 & 10. Couldn't get
a new Windows 10 specific video driver to install.

As noted above, I made a system image backup before embarking on this
adventure. I've been trying since 7:00am this morning to get Windows 7
Backup & Restore to recognize it.

At this point, it looks like I'm going to have to find all of my
original software media and install from scratch.

They’re quite good if you braise them for several hours, but there’s not a
 lot of meat on them.

Re: OT: Windoze 10 Re-ducks

2016-08-02 Thread John

I wish the ghost of Babbage would mind his own business.

I have a Mac Mini I use for music. I couldn't afford to get a Mac with
as much power as this machine I built to run PhotoShop.

If you "roll your own" you're stuck with the choice of Windoze or
some flavor of Linux, and there's not a Linux version of PhotoShop.

Although, it may be time to begin giving GIMP another look.

Just for grins & giggles, another tale of something or other ...

Started the quest for Windoze 10 on my Photoshop computer yesterday
morning at 4:00am. If I'm going to have insomnia I might as well get
some use out of it.

Again following the procrastinators guide, I made an image backup before

PESO x 2: Beating the Hunger Pangs

2016-08-02 Thread Alan C

A small herd of cattle which strayed into town in search of grazing. There
are several lush spots in this "park" irrigated by mains leaks. Actually
quite dangerous with no herdsman in sight. These are Nguni cattle, a very
tough (ancient) African breed, although I'll wager there is a bit of Brahman
blood there too.
