Re: PESO x 2: Beating the Hunger Pangs (Bob W)
Bob, this should answer your question. Fly was only a problem in the Lowveld areas down the east coast of Africa (like Kruger). http://www.nguni.info/nguni_cattle_southern_africa.htm In many tribal areas, the large bulls were castrated to yield enough oxen for ploughing. This led to degenerate herds serviced by small bulls. Grade bulls of other breeds were introduced to upgrade the gene pool. The characteristic "speckled" hides are now less evident. Re: Hummer Freezing(?)
Jack, the blip of light from a 540 at 1/64th power should easily freeze hummer wings, But I suspect you had enough ambient light to compete with your flash. You need to cut out the ambient so the flash is the sole source of illumination if you want to use the flash to freeze action. Try shooting the same scene both with and without the flash added to see the effect. If you have the flash set up correctly the scene without the flash should be black or just about. Also, the flash duration (t.1 time) is really short even at 1/2 or 1/4 power on a 540 flash. I'd try shooting the birds with the flash at about 1/4 power and with the head zoomed to the narrowest beam. Then set the shutter for 1/180th sec (use X-sync), stop down the aperture, and even attach a neutral density filter if the exposure at the bird is still too high. This should eliminate the ambient light pretty nicely. Yes, googling the word that Jostein said "Draganizing", I found websites that show you how they do this in photoshop. Apparently there is a photographer Andrzej Dragan http://andrzejdragan.com/ that popularized this technique. Yes, any shutter speed, above the native 180 per second with this unit, requires the setting of the available "High Speed Sink" feature. Serious hummingbird photographers get liquid hummingbird food (basically sugary water) for feeders and use an eyedropper to load it into real flowers. Attracts the birds to a specific flower (at which your tripod-mounted camera and long lens are aimed) and looks much nicer than those ugly feeders. Just sitting down with a big lens and trying to track hummingbirds as they choose their own flowers is a good way to burn off a thousand shots or so while only getting one or two keepers. I have a "Better Beamer" but hesitate to use it from 7' ;-) Sides, I have PLENTY of light, especially since it appears the 1/64 flash will not freeze the Hummer wings and I'll be using shutter speed instead. Photographing on ice
... well, on a skating rink. [Preamble] About 9 years ago, I've started photographing in very challenging conditions: dancers on a dimly-lit dance floor. That's when I had to develop certain (new for me) approaches and tricks in the procedure. And many of you have seen Larry and me discussing some of those. I've given several workshops on photographing dancers and dancing so that you would appear well on photographs, where some of the discussed topics were related to the low-light tricks. I should mention how great it feels after all that, to photograph in bright-light conditions, where you can have much larger latitude in your settings (i.e. choose what to bump up: aperture, speed, dial down ISO, ...) [/preamble] Now, here is the main story. Recently, I've got new challenging conditions. About 11 months or so ago, I've started photographing people on a skating rink. Even though the light is usually not as low, I've found that it is the condition that is also rather challenging. The main challenges are with relatively wide dynamic range and with the proper color balance. 1. The ice, and white sides of the scating rink produce a relatively bright background. This makes it easy to underexpose the skaters. And the ice doesn't seem to work well as a reflector, i.e. I have to do "fill-in" in post for the faces. 2. The color gamma of the lights, and I am still trying to understand this, - is somewhat strange. If I am photographing on AWB, I am getting some color cast that I am having problems to describe. It is yellowish (or greenish?), or at least it seems that way to me. I suspect it originates from the combination of lights used in the arena. And I am yet to determine (I keep forgetting to look carefully) what types of lights (and accordingly, their temperature) they are using. I am guessing it might be due to the mixed temperatures of light, or a combination of the light temperature with the whiteness of the ice... Maybe I am not diagnosing it correctly yet, - I am still thinking about it. And I've observed a similar effect on another skating rink, in Austin. If anybody has had experience with photographing on skating rinks, I'd appreciate your tips and thoughts. Re: Peso-Hard Freeze
Thanks, Paul. I went to the shutter for a try. 6400 was the set shutter speed in TAV. ISO was auto 2000. I'd prefer to use the flash, but seems setting it to manual and increasing the setting to 1/64 duration is, surprisingly, not able to freeze the wings.(??) When using the flash rather than shutter, I set the shutter to something slower even though I don't believe it matters. What would you feel the flash duration would be at 1/64? Re: OT: Windoze 10 Re-ducks
I wish the ghost of Babbage would mind his own business. I have a Mac Mini I use for music. I couldn't afford to get a Mac with as much power as this machine I built to run PhotoShop. If you "roll your own" you're stuck with the choice of Windoze or some flavor of Linux, and there's not a Linux version of PhotoShop. Although, it may be time to begin giving GIMP another look. Started the quest for Windoze 10 on my Photoshop computer yesterday morning at 4:00am. If I'm going to have insomnia I might as well get some use out of it. Again following the procrastinators guide, I made an image backup before starting. That went smoothly, even better than it did on this computer. Forced a roll back to Windows 7 because Windows 10 just wouldn't work. Lag time was incredible. Something as simple as a restart took over 30 minutes. There's not way to load into Safe Mode. I'm pretty sure the problem was something in a video driver, even though I had a video driver that was supposed to be good for Windows 7, 8 & 10. Couldn't get a new Windows 10 specific video driver to install. As noted above, I made a system image backup before embarking on this adventure. I've been trying since 7:00am this morning to get Windows 7 Backup & Restore to recognize it. At this point, it looks like I'm going to have to find all of my original software media and install from scratch. -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for. PESO x 2: Beating the Hunger Pangs
A small herd of cattle which strayed into town in search of grazing. There are several lush spots in this "park" irrigated by mains leaks. Actually quite dangerous with no herdsman in sight. These are Nguni cattle, a very tough (ancient) African breed, although I'll wager there is a bit of Brahman blood there too. https://www.flickr.com/photos/wisselstroom/28684761916/ Scroll right for the other.
