Not installed. I am considering that it would run a photo viewer or a
web browser (unless autorun is disabled). That's for those who don't know
what to do with Jpeg files..

Boris and Stan:
Yes, I hear you, and I use a very similar way of passing photographs to
people - via various *box cloud storage or my-own website.
In this case, the format is chosen by the teachers. It's either because
they are used to that, or because they want to give people something
tangible (or both). I will try to talk to them, but I am not going to
insist. (And I won't be burning all the CDs myself. ... probably )

Stan, thank you for offering to check the format.. Unfortunately, it will
be happening all too quickly that I won't have time for that.

Cheers,

Igor

My kid's school teacher asked to put together photos (mine and teachers') so
that they will given on a CD to each kid in the class.
(I've been taking a lot of photos at various school events throughout the
year.)
So, I am thinking how to structure that CD. So, all your practical
suggestions are welcome.

Here is the way I am thinking about it right now:
1. The simplest thing would be just to have a bunch of folders that are
titled as date+event name.

Since it should be easy for the end-users (parents, and not all of them a
computer-comfortable or even computer-literate), I am thinking if it would be
better to build also simple HTML galleries (in addition to just photos).
Personally, as a customer, I'd prefer just a simple set of folders with
JPEGs to be viewed by a "standard" (or customer-installed) photo viewer, but
I am a bit more computer-literate... What do you think?

2. I can set "autorun.inf" for Windows to start something... (e.g. the main
index.htm file if I were to create web-galleries)

While there are ways to do the same for Mac, e.g. by following this scenario:
http://jordan.broughs.net/archives/2008/03/creating-cross-platform-windows-and-mac-installer-cds
I don't have an easy access to a Mac, so, it is not an option for me...
So, most likely, even if I were to do that for Windows, nothing special will
be done for a Mac.

3. From what I understand, starting from OS-X, a joliet-format CD is not a
problem for a Mac anymore (i.e. I don't need to worry about building a
"hybrid"-format CD).
But I wonder, with a modern Mac, what happens when you insert a CD with a set
of folders containing JPEGs into a Mac: will it offer to open a photo viewer
(if nothing is configured to happen as discussed in #2 above)?

4. I assume some of you may have provided your customers with a CD of
photographs. What type of format did you do in that case? Anything beyond
just a simple set of JPEGs?

Thank you,

Igor

One other thought. Aren’t there free slide show viewers? For both Mac and
Windows? Set up one of each with pointers to the root of your image folder

I believe it will totally depend on how the user preferences are set. On my
iMac, a CD with folders of photos is just like any other set of folders.
If/when I double-click on an actual image file (not a folder or sub-folder),
then Something will rise up to digest that file and render it in all its glory.
It might be Preview, it might be Photos, it might be Elements or it might be

that will smoothly allow for right-arrow/left-arrow movement from image to
image. A lot of open file, view, close file, and repeat…

If it were me, I would set up a gallery within my poorly organized overloaded
Zenfolio-based photo gallery. I do that with family reunion photos for example.
With a direct link to that specific gallery and easy navigation once there it
simplifies the access for less literate viewers. Set the parameters to allow
download of original images and tell the parents to go wild. (And maybe provide
an email address i anyone needs Help?) If there is concern about “public”
posting of kids’ photos, password access to that gallery.

Many similar options but Zenfolio is the one I know. And a one-year
less-than-deluxe membership would probably be less than the cost of a bunch of
CDs.

Another option is to build and export your gallery from Lightroom as an
HTML-coded website which you can then host wherever.

If you do stick with the CD solution, however you structure the folders and
files (and any Mac-compatible .exe gadget), if you want to send me a link or
actual content (via dropbox for example) I can do a quick look at how it will
perform under OS-X.

I carefully cut those teensy plastic dividers away with a very sharp
x-acto blade and get rid of them. They frequently snap off at one end
or the middle and cause cards to malfunction when inserted into
readers. Sometimes the loose sliver of plastic even snags and wedges
the card into the reader.

Most cards (eg Sandisk) don't have this superfluous plastic junk, so
there's really no downside to the sliverectomy.

Re: Need advice: Photo Collection on a CD

2017-05-17 Thread Boris Liberman
Igor, the last time I gave out CDs (it were actually DVDs) was
gazillion years ago. It wasn't even the 6th grade of my older
daughter, while she's finishing 10th grade now.

I have started with DropBox account where I would put 20x30 cm
printables and share the link to the folder of each event via e-mail.

The problem with DropBox was that it had too small a size, so I went
down the Google route. Nowadays, I'm uploading 20x30 cm printables to
Google Drive (15 GB free out of the box, so to say, no pun here) and
sharing the links from my cell phone to the WhatsApp group. This is
for my younger daughter who's now finishing 3rd grade in school. This
really works like a charm.

I remember having most annoying problem with the DVDs/CDs - each
parent wants specific sub-set of photos, where their own kid shows.
So, I've spent lots of time doing all kinds of stuff. Say, there were
few parents who asked me to please give them photos of just their kid
for bat-mitzvah/bar-mitzvah albums. I obliged, but it was laborious.

With things such as DropBox or Google Drive - each one just gets to
easily page through all the pics and download whatever they want - no
involvement from me.

Re: Third party K-1 pixel shift support

2017-05-17 Thread Mark C
Thanks for sharing that info, I'll probably give it a try. I
experimented a little with RawTherapee a few years ago when toying with
the idea of trying to setup a Linux based photo workflow, but did not
get into it enough to form any opinion. The ability to have it auto
select pixel shift method (motion corrected or not) sounds interesting.
Silkypix allows you to manually select between the two or to disable it,
but no auto correct. When I do focus stacks there are occasional
vibrations due to trucks passing etc. that may affect one or two images
in the stack. It would be nice if the raw converter automatically
detected those situations and adjusted them. As it is a just process all
as motion corrected.

Need advice: Photo Collection on a CD

2017-05-17 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi All!

The end of the school year is a busy time... I've been a bit swamped, but
I have an urgent and important question for which I hope some PDMLers
might have some good suggestions.

My kid's school teacher asked to put together photos (mine and teachers')
so that they will given on a CD to each kid in the class.

Since it should be easy for the end-users (parents, and not all of them a
computer-comfortable or even computer-literate), I am thinking if it would
be better to build also simple HTML galleries (in addition to just
photos).
Personally, as a customer, I'd prefer just a simple set of folders with
JPEGs to be viewed by a "standard" (or customer-installed) photo viewer,
but I am a bit more computer-literate... What do you think?

2. I can set "autorun.inf" for Windows to start something... (e.g. the
main index.htm file if I were to create web-galleries)
While there are ways to do the same for Mac, e.g. by following this
scenario:

http://jordan.broughs.net/archives/2008/03/creating-cross-platform-windows-and-mac-installer-cds
I don't have an easy access to a Mac, so, it is not an option for me...
So, most likely, even if I were to do that for Windows, nothing special
will be done for a Mac.

3. From what I understand, starting from OS-X, a joliet-format CD is not a
problem for a Mac anymore (i.e. I don't need to worry about building a
"hybrid"-format CD).
But I wonder, with a modern Mac, what happens when you insert a CD
with a set of folders containing JPEGs into a Mac: will it offer to open a
photo viewer (if nothing is configured to happen as discussed in #2
above)?

4. I assume some of you may have provided your customers with a CD of
photographs. What type of format did you do in that case? Anything beyond
just a simple set of JPEGs?

Thank you,

Igor

 Subject: K-s2 vs K70?

I'm not a remarkably serious or advanced photographer. Mostly street
shhoting while travelling, some landscapes, churches, etc. I had a K-X
for some time & while my own limitations ruined quite a few shots, I
cannot recall camera limitations ever posing a problem other than
 weight & low light performance.

If I saw a K-S1 or K-01 at a good price, I'd grab it, mainly becase
those cameras are light so good for travel. Anyone selling one?

My main question, though, is whether anyone has opinions on the
relative merits of K-S2 and K-70. Lokking at the web, the S2 is a
little cheaper & lighter, but not enough to really matter. The main
advantage of the 70 is that it has the sensor-shift high-res mode.
 Have people found that useful?

There is also a plugin that will add it as a slider, you still have to activate
for each image seperately though, using the menu:

'File -> Plugin Extras -> DeHaze Control'

The desciption and download for this plugin is at:

https://cutthruthefog.wordpress.com/lightroom-6-dehaze/

I have been using it for several months now (on Lightroom 6.6.1) and it works
well.

Re: Third party K-1 pixel shift support

2017-05-17 Thread P. J. Alling
I really wish I could trust RawTherapee, I last used it when I first got
my K20D and it would crash trying to render thumbnails from either DNG
files generated by the camera or PEF files. In fact it even crashed
when trying to render DNG files generated by Adobe's DNG converter
software that were originally from the K20D. It took them so long to
fix that issue, with no workaround on the horizon that I simply
uninstalled the software and moved on.

The only other thing that I remember about it was that even rendering
6MP files from the *ist-D and Ds cameras I was using were painfully slow
compared to pretty much everything else, though IIRC the resulting
images were nice.

I guess I shouldn't complain, the software was free, but I don't expect
people to use my software if it doesn't fulfill it's purpose for them, I
have the same expectation from other people's software.

Re: K-s2 vs K70?

2017-05-17 Thread P. J. Alling
Unless you plan on doing photography that actually requires the pixel
shift I wouldn't worry about it. For your described shooting style it
seems to be particularly useless for any hand held application. It
wouldn't hurt to have it but then you'll probably want to invest in a
very good tripod, which if you don't own one already, well, the price is
actually shocking.

I think the other advantages of the K70 are more important, it's higher
resolution, thought 20 vs 24mp isn't that important, but, (these are all
in the K70's favor), it got a bigger buffer, higher available ISOs,
better live view AF, faster frame rates, not that the buffer is all
that, but you'll get faster shot to shot times both raw and JPEG.

I think the only real advantage of the K-S2 at this point is it has NFC
connectivity, (is that really an advantage), and slightly lighter weight.

If the price difference is not a big factor get the K70, except for
minor cosmetic differences the body and handling of the two cameras is
pretty much the same.

Re: LR Dehaze filter

2017-05-17 Thread Matthew Hunt
The Dehaze tool is officially only in Lightroom CC, not in perpetually
licensed Lightroom 6. However, if a preset is created in Lr CC with a
dehaze setting, Lr 6 will understand and apply that dehaze setting. So some
nice people have created presets with a range of dehaze settings that you
can use in Lr 6:

https://petapixel.com/2015/06/24/this-preset-pack-brings-real-dehaze-to-lightroom-6-1/
https://www.proloststore.com/products/dehaze

It's not as convenient as a slider, but it is, as you say, a workaround.
