Re: Semi-OT: Maybe ... STATUS UPDATE

2017-05-28 Thread Brian Walters
Thanks for the suggestion, John.

I'm not sure I want to spend good money on this machine - it's mainly
used when I travel and as a third backup for my photo collection (it's
convenient to have my entire catalog with me when I travel but I don't
rely on the machine as a main backup).

Apart from the Update problem, the biggest drawback is the size of the
existing HD. It's just about got to the stage where I wont be able to
store my complete image archive. I don't think an SSD will help there.

As an aside, I know Vista gets a lot of bad press but I've found it
quite reliable on this machine (so much so that I never bothered to
install the Win 7 update that came with it).

Cheers

Eternal Father, strong to save,

Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Lord, guard and guide the men who fly
Through the great spaces in the sky.
Be with them always in the air,
In darkening storms or sunlight fair;
Oh, hear us when we lift our prayer,
For those in peril in the air!

Eternal Father, grant, we pray,

There's probably something changed in the Thunderbird settings that
happened with the last update. I can probably change it back to the
previous settings if I do a google lookup. I just have to remember to
use the Reply List rather than the Reply button.

If necessary, I can set the software to only include the list address,
stripping out the original sender address, but we've run OK without
that for many years, and it may wonk up some users' reply settings.

LR 6.10 warning

2017-05-28 Thread Larry Colen

I just upgraded to 6.10 last night and have run into a couple of quirks.

When adjusting curves, where you can click on the photo and use the
brightness at that point as the place on the curve to adjust seems to be
broken and all it does is drag the photo around.

Also, performance seems to really suck in some places, like when I'm
trying to export photos and change the name of the target directory, I'm
getting lots of spinny balls. I don't know whether the performance
issues are MacOs or LR, but it's never been quite this bad before.

It's probably worth waiting for things to settle out before going to the
latest LR 6 upgrade.

ever since editing video for broadcast news, as well as all the other
stuff that we need computers for and it has not skipped a beat. If it
does, I expect I might need to replace the motherboard at some point.

All I've ever done is replace the HD with a 250 GB SSD and maxed out the RAM.

I run 10.8.5 and all my stuff just works.

I can't afford top dollar for new computers either - so value for money
is important for me.

And althought I *used* to be a bit of an Apple fanboy, no longer. I
tossed my iPhone 6 a year ago for a BlackBerry Classic and not looked
back. Would love a BB KEYone but too expensive for now...

Semi-OT: Maybe ... STATUS UPDATE

2017-05-28 Thread John

1. I finally got Windoze Update working on the Toshiba.

Based on something I read on a Microsoft forum, I left it running
overnight searching for updates. There were 18 updates available when I
got out of bed this morning. Apparently the Update Client has to update
itself before it will find updates. I'm installing them in small batches
based on release date, oldest first. So far, I've only had one to fail.
I'll try that one again after I've installed all the others.

2. Egghead finally coughed up a page full of refurbished laptops with
Windows 7 Professional 64bit installed.

If I still end up having to replace the Toshiba, my NEW plan is to get
one of these. Linux can wait until I can no longer get Windows 7.

I would think it is cheaper and safer to buy a new Windows 10 PC than a
linux PC with comparable performance. Then install linux on a partition

I have a couple of older desktops and a laptop which are solely running
linux distros (Debian, Xubuntu, Lubuntu Mint etc.) for all sorts of
programs and for backup.

Using linux with its great inventory of free programs can be much fun.
But I still prefer RAW conversion in Lightroom on a decent i7 desktop

Third time I've got it checking for updates to see if maybe there are
some I need to install first ...

It's been running the "Checking for Updates" for about 2 hours now.

The laptop is about 10 years old IIRC. Toshiba A205. I still like it a
lot, it has 2 Hard-drives - 500GB & 1TB - and a DVDRW Optical drive.
Don't think I'm going to find that in a new laptop. AND because it's a
WINDOZE computer (Win 7 Pro 64bit) it will run PhotoshopCS5 - maybe not
great with just 4GB RAM & only 3.5GB of that usable, but it does run.

Trying to "upgrade" to Windoze 10 was such a disaster I refuse to have
it on any computer I own, and the price for a MacBook Pro is so
outrageously expensive to get the one I'd want is just too much pain.

So I'm thinking about a Linux laptop. Which means either GIMP for image
editing or trying to run PhotoShop on WINE.

I know there are some Linux users here, maybe even a Guru or two.

Anyone using GIMP recently? Or running PhotoShop using WINE?

Or is there another way?

Help!

Re: Semi-OT: Maybe getting a new laptop?

2017-05-28 Thread Rick Womer
I bought my current MBP in January 2009. I've replaced the battery 3 times,
switched from a spinny HDD to an SSD, and upgraded the OS a few times.
That's it.

It's my only work computer. It's in my backpack when it's not in its
docking station at work or on my desk at home. Zero failures in 9+ years of
heavy use is pretty good.

I had two "heavy duty" HPs and two Toshibas before it, and none made it to
3 1/2 years before irreparably failing.
