Re: refusal to even attempt to focus
The electrical contacts between lenses and bodies are usually kept clean by the mounting and dismounting process. Each time you turn a lens towards the lock position, or away from it, it wipes clean the contacts by a very small amount. So, a seldomly mounted or changed lens only gets cleaned seldomly and can become 'iffy' in its connection. Sometimes I've had to hold in the lock button and work the mount to eliminate an intermittent electrical disconnection of a lens, which I've experienced in different mounts and their various sub-versions: Nikon, Pentax K, FourThirds and Micro FourThirds. They've all experienced this issue from time to time. Some people claim you should switch off a camera whenever you change lenses. I think that's being overly cautious, however if you're going to 'work the mount' like I suggested it'd be a good idea. Perhaps it's also a precaution to take with this lens in case it's getting premature and interrupted boot-ups during mounting to a powered camera. regards, Anthony On 19 December 2017 at 07:10, Larry Colen wrote: > > > Anthony Farr wrote: >> >> First you need to isolate the fault to either the lens or the camera >> body. Within a half-hour of posting I received a text asking if it was still available and how much I wanted for it. I said it was and the price was the price I’d asked—$100. Then the guy said he didn’t live in the area, had arranged for a mover to pick up the dryer, and would send me a certified check with extra money for *me* to pay the mover and my trouble. When the check arrived I was to deposit it, wait for it to clear, and then send a check to the “mover,” who will then come to pick up the dryer. I received a check for $1250.45—for a $100 dryer!. I tore it up and threw it in the trash. The guy texted to see if I had received and deposited the check. I said I had received it but had accidentally put it through my shredder and asked him to send another one. I haven’t heard back from him. If he sends another check and gets in touch with me again, I’m gonna tell him that since he’s willing to pay 12 times what I asked for the dryer I’d like *him* to pay the “mover." OT: Do you think this is a SCAM?
Second try - first time hit one of Earthlink's modems that's on the PDML blacklist. I got a call today to tell me I won $2.8 million in the Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes (which I haven't even received junk mail from for years & years, much less entered). I only need to pay $950 for "registration & insurance" in order to collect my prize. Only problem is that when I told him I'd have to go to the bank to see if I have the $950 for "registration & insurance" in my account the call mysteriously "dropped". He called back once, but didn't get further than "I'm sorry, the call ..." before it "dropped" again. Do you think this might be a SCAM? That's a rhetorical question BTW. If he thinks I'm going to give him money or banking information, he's stupider than he obviously thinks I am. But it was entertaining for a few minutes. UPDATE: These guys got pretty frantic trying to get back in touch with me. I let them accumulate about a dozen "missed calls" before picking up again. I told them I was having problems with my cell phone and suggested they call me back on my "land line". Gave them the telephone number for the Charlotte, NC FBI office. They even called me back once again to verify they had copied the number for my land line correctly. Gave them the FBI's number again and made sure I enunciated clearly. 8D -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for. By the way, a significant portion of my upper division classes in college were on digital signal processing. A lot of my professional life has been in computer controls, where we digitize real world data and work with that. As such, there are a lot of things that I don't even have to think about like converting number of bits to an equivalent analog range, so if I mention something as if it is obvious, and it's not, don't hesitate to ask. In short The K-5 dynamic range at base ISO is basically 14 stops (each bit or stop is a power of two), that means that it has a range of 1 to 2^14, or about 16,000 between the least amount that it can register and the brightest that it can register (for each color channel). If you have a camera with only 10 stops of dynamic then that is only a ratio of 1,024. JPEGs (for example) have 8 bits (coincidentally a bit and a stop each represent a doubling, or power of two), which is a ratio of 1-256. What that means is if you map the range of the sensor onto the JPEG, then it takes 16 times as much change in brightness (contrast) with a 14 bit sensor to make the same change in 8 bits as it does with a 10 bit sensor. If you do an HDR in lightroom with two images shot 6-8 stops apart of a scene with a lot of dynamic range, and you process it without the auto exposure the resultant image will look very flat and low contrast. It's something that kind of takes some playing around and experimentation to get a good feel for. As to the raw conversion engine, it doesn't really matter what is running under lightroom, the fact that you do your processing in lightroom is what I was asking about. One nice thing about lightroom is that it doesn't make any changes to the raw file. It stores a set of steps (a recipe, if you will) for the raw conversion engine, to apply to the raw file to get your final product. When you make a virtual copy, it just starts off with all of the settings at whatever point you make the virtual copy and you can adjust them at that point. You could go to one of you photos that you've already processed in lightroom. Press 'D' to get into the develop module, go to the history on the left, click on "import photo", and that will have all of the settings zeroed out. Then hit (command or control)-single quote to make your virtual copy, and that virtual copy is starting out fresh. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Yes, just create a 'Virtual Copy' of the image (you can make several if you wish) and work on the copy. Each copy has its own set of 'adjustments made to it' but share the same (unchanged) RAW data. You can also use this to create different aspect ratios or crops for example ... It would focus then it would not. After some experiments i determined it was the D200. I did clean the contacts. It worked well on my D1H and D2H so it must be the D200. Re: PESO+ squeezerlens experiments
Thank you, Bob. It's fun to use but not that simple to get useable images. A little of the OOF effect goes a long way, and as usual I struggle with subtlety. ;) The model herself loves that shot. One of her friends declared it's now his favourite portrait of her. On Sun, Dec 17, 2017 at 7:45 PM, Bob W-PDML wrote: > Good stuff. Re: refusal to even attempt to focus
Larry, I'd try cleaning the contacts on the lens. "Spit & Polish". Alan C -Original Message- From: Larry Colen Sent: 18 December, 2017 8:49 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: refusal to even attempt to focus This afternoon I was photographing a heron at the Waldport seawall with my K-1 and sigma 50-500 during low tide. It had flown from one spot to another, I was walking back to the new spot, photographing as I went, and at one point the camera went completely out of focus, then wouldn't even attempt to focus. I eventually got it back on track, got some more shots, then the bird spooked, flew off (past me) I tried for some flight photos but the lens again went completely out of focus, then refused to do anything to get back into focus. With the bigma I couldn't (easily) manually focus and I completely lost my opportunity for those BiF photos. Re: refusal to even attempt to focus
First you need to isolate the fault to either the lens or the camera body. You have other camera bodies so start by determining if the Bigma behaves or misbehaves on those. regards, Anthony On 18 December 2017 at 17:49, Larry Colen wrote: > This afternoon I was photographing a heron at the Waldport seawall with my > K-1 and sigma 50-500 during low tide.
