I put such a card in my old (really old) Windows PC. Worked really well. I
tried Vuescan on my Mac but just couldn't get the colour rendering right. I
like the old Minolta software anyway.

iMovie is a very simple video editing app - it isn't capable of converting from
different video codecs* for editing. Mpeg Streamclip is all about converting
different codecs*.

* Codec means 'code/decode' and refers to the type of file that is produced by
any given recording device. Such files produced may or may not be instantly
viewable with being 'decoded' by proprietary or third party software first.
There are a lot of reasons why this is the way it is.

One of the reasons I liked the JVC cameras as they can be set to bypass all
that shit and allow instant viewing and editing.

In professional TV production there are good reasons why this is not preferable
- I won't bore you with them - and the cameras I use output files that need
expensive ways of making them ready to view and edit.

HTH - time go go cook sausages! later dude

I still have some genuine HM100 camera files - if you want a look, I can

Incidentally when I came to GFM and made a test documentary excerpt (that never

>Just looking for recommendations on small handheld video camera's. I not

The thing about video is this.

There are still cameras that have video bolted on as an afterthought, more like
'emergency video provision'. Your iPhone will do better video than these types
of cameras.

There are genuine hybrid cameras that are reasonably good at stills, and
reasonably good at video. They tend to be expensive!

There are video cameras that may (or may not) allow you to take stills.

The word here is 'compromise'.

May I make a suggestion? If you want a decent small video camera that will do
autofocus while shooting, zoom in and out with a fixed zoom lens on the camera,
and auto aperture - there is a good selection available out there limited only
by how much you want to spend.

A few years ago I used to have a JVC GY-HM100 camera and it was brilliant. If
you could get a good one second hand, you'd love it. EVF to look down and/or
swing-out LCD panel useful for ageing eyes. AF and AE, a decent zoom lens built
in and a removable handle with proper XLR inputs on it for a small mic for good
sound recording. Best of all it chucked out genuine Mov files which could
easily be converted for editing using software like Mpeg Streamclip. IIRC they
even were editable natively in Final Cut. Brilliant little camera - streets
ahead of most amateur cameras which tend to have zillions of options buried in
menus alongside bewildering buttons that need weeks of reading about in thick
manuals before you can even switch the damned thing on.

The nice thing about pro video gear is that it has to be easy to switch on and
then work out of the box because often times that's exactly what happens to it,
by people that really shouldn't be shooting video... (but that's another
matter!!)

Here's a link:

Notice the file type it puts out - either MP4 or native MOV files - instantly
viewable and editable. That's the killer function here - and the quality is
superb. I used mine as a an action cam, mounting it in cars or on bikes etc -
because not every action camera mounted needs to be a GoPro.

Note that link is archived - I looked on eekbay and here's one that went for
400 bucks US:

That's a steal.

Or by all means search out a new video camera (camcorders) from a selection
like this:

HTH and good luck!

Interesting. Here's a page with some details abut shooting video on the K5

>From what I have read, it is not possible to use AF during video recording on

This shouldn't in itself be a problem - manual focus is much preferred for
video. If I shoot video on my Pen F, it is only with manual ficus and manual
aperture lenses.

If you want to use AF with video, you can obviously buy a camera with AF for
video, but they are not foolproof.

Re: FS Friday: Minolta film scanner

2018-01-20 Thread P. J. Alling
If I remember correctly, with a USB scanner Viewscan required that you
have a working USB driver for the scanner.  That's usually why the
"native" scanning software fails.

The driver model was changed by Microsoft several times from Win2000, to
WinXP and Vista and support for the old model was completely dropped
with the release of Windows 8.  Sometimes you can get older drivers to
work with Windows 7, in compatibility mode, though that's not guaranteed
as those compatibility modes are sometimes not all that compatible.

IIRC Minolta got out of the scanner business before Apple went to Intel.

As it's USB you should be able to use it with an old OS in a virtual machine on
modern hardware. My experience with USB devices on Virtualbox is that it was a
bit fiddly to set up but it worked very well.

Your other choices are Vuescan, or an old machine (PPC Mac or Windows). I had
to keep old hardware as my scanner is Firewire.

either as a seperate conversion cable or with Firewire ports on external

that include a Thunderbolt hub.

I plan to use my Nikon 8000-ED using such a display, with Vuescan ...

There's also the option of SilverFast for software, though I don't
recommend it. The quality is excellent (my old Kodak RFS3600 scanner
came with SilverFast) but it's pricier than VueScan and - get this -
each version of SilverFast works with only one scanner: If/when you
get a new scanner you have to purchase the software again! No thanks,
SilverFast.

To use a FireWire scanner on my up-to-date computer hardware I just
bought an IEE1394 card and plugged it in. Good to go!
