i've been using darktable for almost a year and a half (currently
running 2.4.4 under slackware current). fwiw, all of my photos posted

OT - interesting taxi concept

2018-10-12 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Some of the PDMLer are car enthusiasts, so, I thought some people might
enjoy this interesting car concept.

Someone sent me a photograph of the experimental taxi in the Soviet Union
circa 1964:

https://pikabu.ru/story/taksi_sssr_1964_g_5589293

The interesting thing that it could fit a bassinet-stroller
(non-collapsible) or a refrigerator (!) - as in: you can bring home the
one that you just bought at a store.

It had a [then] futuristic design, and most of its parts were from other
contemporary mass-manufactured vehicle(s). ("Moskvich 408", primarily)

One can see some safety concerns, but back then the amount of car traffic
was rather small. Even in the US, the car safety started gaining some
consideration only in mid-to late 50s, but US DoT and NTSB were not
formed until 1966 and 1967, respectively, and the first mandatory federal
safety standard for motor vehicles was not established until 1966.

This morning, I was watching a news bite on self-driving taxis from Waymo
(Ex-Google-car) - in AZ. So, I thought that despite the technology,
the idea of a practical taxi, where you can stroll in with your baby,
has not been implemented.

Yes, there are wheel-chair-accessible vans, but those are very specialized
services. And there are foldable strollers that can fit in a small trunk,
that some PDMLers who live on that small island call "boot".

I am guessing that one of the reasons why the idea of accommodating
strollers in the car is that young families with small babies do not
constitute the most financially-striving part of the population.
(And, of course, these days, you want to strap your baby in a car seat,
which, in the realm of taxis is a big grey zone: taxis do not provide car
seats, and in some localities, you are not *required* to use a car seat in
a taxi. In both cases - I guess mostly for the same reason: such families
are not frequent cab riders.)

For comparison, I know that Uber offers "Uber Car Seat (aka uberFAMILY)
option for its uberX vehicles, but AFAIK, that is limited to NYC,
Washington DC, Philadelphia and Orlando (and it costs $10 extra).

Even in pedestrian-friendly Boston and SF that is not an option.
Lyft does that only in NYC.
Those facts support my hypothesis that taxi/ride-sharing services do not
see much of profit in catering to [young] families with small kids/babies.

Igor

PS. We are way pass the time we used a stroller, - so, I am looking at
the problem, so to say, "from the academic point of view".

Ah, I stand, or rather, err sit corrected.  I haven't updated my
information on RAW converters for a few years now, since DxO   and my
old version of Photoshop do  pretty much everything I want and DxO
hasn't pissed me off yet.  On the other hand darktable does look rather
good, and DxO is quite likely to piss me off in the future.   Their
handling of the gift copy of Filmpack 3.0 registration certainly gives
me pause.

earlier cameras such as the *ist series, not even when converted to

files.  It works very well with K20D and K-5II files.

they think one of my submissions has some merit. If I get no response to a
PESO, I get the message that no one particularly likes it, but it has been
quite some time since I received some critical feedback, and even longer
since I saw any negative feedback.

Part of that is your fault, your photography is better so the reasons to
give negative feedback are much smaller. When I'm teaching people
driving at the race track they generally start out with a few very big
problems. It's generally fairly easy to decide which one or two things
to work on. At a certain point, we've taken care of the few big issues,
then that leaves the little things. In a quantitative field like driving
on a track, the danger is in overwhelming the student with too many
little things. In an artistic field like photography any one of those
little things can be a matter of taste where some people will agree with
the proposed change and others not.

I think we have become more and more like FaceBook, where people will
"like" an image, but not go much beyond that. There have been a few images
in the recent past that have provoked interesting and meaningful
discussions on composition, lighting,l exposure or other aspects of the
work, but those seem to me few and far between. Much more common are posts
with no feedback or with a comment like "pretty butterfly." Everyone likes

It could be worse, they could say "pretty butterfly" about a photo of a
tree. :-)

to hear that the subject of their image is attractive, but that is no
substitute for the kinds of intense discussions and debates that went on
here when the number of active participants was higher.

Joking aside, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The quality of feedback
on this list was among the highest I've seen online. The feedback I see
these days is still very good, but it's a lot less frequent.

A photo of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia would fit & doesn't

Exactly. Plus, for example, cathedrals, inside musical instruments

Re: PPG - Maybe it has a future after all

2018-10-12 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
What I miss here lately, and what I can not get on FaceBook, is
intelligent and constructive criticism.

Ten years ago, and even 3 or 4 years ago, I would post an image and more
experienced and talented members of the group would give me honest -- and
sometimes even brutal -- criticisms, More often, a post would draw
comments on what was interesting and good about the image, what
aspects were weak or dissonant, and what could have been done, or still
could be done, to make it stronger. Now, a few people will let me know if
they think one of my submissions has some merit. If I get no response to a
PESO, I get the message that no one particularly likes it, but it has been
quite some time since I received some critical feedback, and even longer
since I saw any negative feedback.

I think we have become more and more like FaceBook, where people will
"like" an image, but not go much beyond that. There have been a few images
in the recent past that have provoked interesting and meaningful
discussions on composition, lighting,l exposure or other aspects of the
work, but those seem to me few and far between. Much more common are posts
with no feedback or with a comment like "pretty butterfly." Everyone likes
to hear that the subject of their image is attractive, but that is no
substitute for the kinds of intense discussions and debates that went on
here when the number of active participants was higher.

Just the grumblings of an old grouch.
