Re: New Pentax Flagship DSLR Prototype to be Exhibited

2019-09-20 Thread P. J. Alling

Moore's law has been broken for about 5 years now.

However I was really hoping that they hadn't gone crazy on the UI since
changing between cameras is getting to be more of a pain as I get
older.  That looks like it might not be true since the top plate
controls kind of look like those on the K-1 and the K-P but not really,
and the back plate looks like the K-3 but not really.    That said, the
addition of a joystick for selecting autofocus points etc. is probably a
very good thing, better than a lot of videocentric controls on a camera
that's universally acknowledged as a not great video platform.  The
third dial on the back of the top plate if it can be dedicated to
something useful such as ISO would be very useful.  The small dial that
eats into the top plate display seems to have very few functions on it,
enough said about that.

Better auto focus would be nice, improved battery life would be nice,
higher resolution than the K-3 is probably a given, but I don't really
think it's necessary in an APS-C sized sensor, fewer higher quality
pixels might be a better option but the Megapixel wars must go on
apparently.  Higher frame rates also probably a given, (hopefully with
the return of the 1/8000 sec top shutter speed), but it kind of depends
on the implementation.  I expect that higher dynamic range is also in
the cards, though probably through programming trickery, still that too
would be nice, (nicer if the user could turn it off to get true raw
files, if possible).

Faster bus speed with a big buffer, yes that would be nice too. Most
likely we'll see one or the other of those.

I really do hope this gives people a compelling case to upgrade, because
that's the only way RIcoh will sell enough cameras for Pentax to survive
as a brand and a system.

Unfortunately as with all Digital cameras nowadays, it's main
competition will be with the previous two or three generations of
digital cameras, which reached sufficiency for the needs for most
photographers, and sell at bargain prices.

Hmm. It looks as though I'll probably be buying a camera next year …

It will be very interesting to see how it performs. There seems to be about a
2-3 year gap in APS vs FF sensor performance. In theory based on Moore’s law
it would be about 1.5 years for a doubling of performance makes up for having
half the sensor area. With something like a four year gap between the K-1 and
this, the sensor might out perform the K-1. Similarly they also have several
years of technology to throw at autofocus.

CORRECTION - PARIS BOOK PRICES - yikes! embarrasment! regret!

2019-09-20 Thread ann sanfedele
I've already contacted a couple of you  who not only ordered the book
but paid me for it - for the rest, here is what happened.
I was naive enough to believe that the book, which I can only get myself
for $44.50 (thats with a coupon yet) i.e. the base price for
the sales, was temporarily offered to me for $14.50.  Ok Looks like a
simple typo, right? the 4 is right near tie 1 etc.. but I called
and said, really? and customer sevice gal at Create Photo Calendars
assured me $14.50 was correct until October 1st.   base Canard.

SO I go to order ONE copy just to reassure myself the printing template
was correct before I orderered all teh books people ordered..
THEN ) I go to CHECKOUT and the discounted price came up $$44.50.   So I
called and same aldy scratches head and says, gee, let me check into that.

Finally I get to the higher-up guy who I knew over the last couple of
years, who was helpful and smart etc and, alas, he confirmed that there
was NO $14.50
price for a book that was more than 20 pages /There will be a staff
meeting about this/. says he. OF course, he said, he really couldn't
sell me the books for $14.50 each, too deep a discount by a lot and I
had to agree.  Given my financial status, I couldn't stick to the $25 I
offered to sell the book for.  If it had been a mistake that left me
with a cost price I would have let it go and been glad people who wanted
the book but also had pockets to thin to justify paying twice that got
to have it. Sigh.

The $14.50 price was sitting ther right under the thumbnail of my book
on my (access by me only) project list.  The "lifetime discount" prices
for all my
wall calendars are correct - because a 12 month calendar is the
-included- number of pages on all.  Phew.

If you still want the book and we haven't talked you can either buy it
on line directly from my "store" on creat photo calendars site or you can
send me $50 for the book and I'll give you free shipping to make up a
little for my not asking to speak to someone higher up at CPC earlier..

My calendar prices on the site itself are all $18 for the standard size
(8 1/2 x 11") and $22 for the 11x14, but landscape orientation. There
is one new calendar - Patterns in Nature - and 16 other older calendars
that those of you who are devoted to gathering my wall calendars

may or may not  have that originall were on CAFEPRESS.

NEWly added but previously published wall calendar is a selection of
photos from the Paris book.. all lanscape oriented and all in Paris

/per se.

PLease let me know if you want me to scratch your name off the list of
orders, (I won't be offended ) /or if you still would like THE FIRST
TIME I SAW PARIS
, signed and with free shipping .. but I need to know by Tuesday at the
latest...(9/24).

Here is the link to all things Ann Sanfedele books and calendars on cpc

https://www.createphotocalendars.com/Shop/annsanfedelecalendarsandbooks

If you are not getting the book and you want a calendar please just
order one from the store whenever...

If you are getting the book, I can include it in the shipment I get from
cpc with the books that I need to get to sign.

Your ditzy photographer,
ann
