It might be a fairly dull image, but including your feet was a stroke of

PESO 2020 - 061 - GDG

2020-04-08 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
One of the forty six exposures I made on my walk yesterday.

  Spiral Art - Santa Clara 2020 :: https://flic.kr/p/2iNp4i8

While I've done these sorts of photos with the Leica CL + Voigtländer 10mm (and
other cameras...) and found them successful and satisfying, I have to say the
Hasselblad 907x + 21 mm takes them to a different level in detail and tonal
qualities.

I'll suspect I'll try more people oriented street shooting when the 45mm lens
arrives. :D

enjoy!

I-40 to I-85 is the quickest, but US 1 down to Columbia, SC and I-20
through Augusta are maybe less hectic. Neither appears to be all that
photogenic. No place along the way that really inspires me to linger.

I'm thinking about how I could do just sticking to the numbered
highways and avoiding the interstates all together.

Atlanta is just the gateway to places west ...

There's an old saying that if you die anywhere in the south it doesn't
matter if you're going to heaven or to hell, you're going to change

I'm going out west again some day. Maybe I'll make it all the way to
California.

There's a couple of things I saw before that I'd like to see again &
maybe try to get a decent photograph this time.

Re: Take the long way home

2020-04-08 Thread John
I've been doing "virtual" travel via Google Maps ... sort of dreaming where I'm
going to go if I ever get to go anywhere again. I've made it down to Atlanta so far.

I-40 to I-85 is the quickest, but US 1 down to Columbia, SC and I-20 through
Augusta are maybe less hectic. Neither appears to be all that photogenic. No
place along the way that really inspires me to linger.

I'm thinking about how I could do just sticking to the numbered highways and
avoiding the interstates all together.

Atlanta is just the gateway to places west ...

There's an old saying that if you die anywhere in the south it doesn't matter if
you're going to heaven or to hell, you're going to change planes in Atlanta.

I'm going out west again some day. Maybe I'll make it all the way to California.

There's a couple of things I saw before that I'd like to see again & maybe try
to get a decent photograph this time.

2011 Ricoh GXR-M + Color Skopar 21mm f/4 ISO 1600 @ f/4 @ 1/15 sec

It was one of the last days of my trip to the Isle of Man and Dublin, Ireland
that year. I was on the way home: I took the last ferry of the season from
Douglas to Dublin in very rough seas … The big ferry—very lightly
loaded—tossed like a toothpick on the waves. Everyone on the ship laid on the
decks to avoid getting seasick and to stop being thrown about. We put in to
port late and exhausted.

I had a room at the North Star Hotel booked for two nights, but something had
clobbered my reservation and on the books I only had one night there, but my
plane home was flying on the third day. A little negotiation and I upgraded
to a very nice suite on the upper floor for the duration. I was glad to do
it. I only made it out of the hotel three times, for about an hour apiece, in
the two and a half days because of the drenching rains and high winds.

On one of those excursions, I walked down the block and around the corner
onto Talbot Street to get a cup of espresso and a pastry. The rain was
pouring down, but I couldn't help pull out the Ricoh GXR-M to make a couple
of shots. It was dim, I had to use ISO 1600, and to further add insult to
injury this was the best exposure and I had to crop it down by about 40% to
get what I wanted.

Later that year, I had this 30-inch wide canvas wrap made as a holiday gift
to my partner, and it's been on the wall in the living room since. :)

I thought I'd posted it in the PESO 2011 set, but I saw it wasn't there when
I looked. It is now. ;-)

You can have GFI breakers installed. But it's a pain to test them monthly like
you're supposed to do.

Generally a GFI circuit in the kitchen or bathroom will have the GFI installed
on the first outlet on the circuit with the other outlets on the circuit
protected by that GFI.

Makes it much easier to do the monthly tests.

Y'all do test them every month don't you?

How would you know they're still providing protection if you don't test them?

Appliances with 2-pin plugs are supposed to be double earthed & have all plastic

Stick to the rules & be safe. To be safe, stand by generators should have an

Re: P-TTL flash.

2020-04-08 Thread John J Bloomfield
I've been shooting with Godox lighting gear for about 5 years now.

And petitioning them to give full P-TTL support and HSS to Pentax - and was
over the moon when they did.

The TT350p is an awesome little flash in itself (it's a lovely size
physically) and a perfect cost effective gateway in to a system that will
allow you to explore, off camera flash and even studio strobes all on the
same transmission system should you ever want to.

Godox really do provide high quality gear for comparatively cheap prices.
Something to note though their warranty is 'via retailer' you can't go to
them direct so it can be worth paying a little more to get from a reputable
retailer you know will support you down the road. The adorama stuff is
exactly the same as Godox (and communicates file with Godox branded gear
should you mix them later) they just re-brand them I think so that they
know if a unit really came from them if you need to make a warranty claim,
to avoid people trying to scam them.

Go for it - sure you won't regret it.

Kind Regards
John

Said crew were on the nominal “non-cattle” side of fences, and did not seem to
be at all interested in changing that status. If I got closer to them than
they liked, they’d wander down the road a bit further.

A potentially amusing post script. After I had taken my fill of photos, I
wandered back to the van and continued up the road. As I approached the cattle
I noticed one of them was relieving itself. One of my dad’s favorite
description of heavy rain was “like a tall cow pissing on a flat rock”. Mind
you, my father grew up, or at least spent most of the first twenty odd years of
his life, on the same small island 3000 miles from the California coast as Ann
lives on, so I don’t know where the hell he picked that phrase up. After the
show, I continued around the bend, and saw a couple pulled to the side of the
road sitting on the hood of their car watching the cows. As I came up to them
I rolled down my window and commented on the state of dealing with the
pandemic. “It’s pretty sad when what passes for excitement is watching a cow
take a leak”.

Yes, 240VAC is often (if not usually or always) available as a separate feed in
most homes for powering high load devices like air conditioners, clothes
dryers, etc. The building had the feed from its inception for some of the
heavier duty machinery (like th air circulation system and pool filtering
equipment), and a line was extended to our condo unit prior to us buying it to
power in-unit clothes washer and dryer. It's a larger, three-pronged, earthed
plug from the standard US two and three prong plug.

failed inspection before I did the job… The building was built in
1973 and had dismal wiring in the condominium units … I've ripped
out all the electricals and upgraded everything throughout the
condo to modern spec and capabilities.

That wall behind the sink now has three standard 110VAC outlets
spaced about 1.3m apart to provide power for countertop appliance
use, plus the switching for undercabinet lighting and the garbage
disposal unit. They're all-weather sealed outlets inside and all
properly grounded. I have two more on the opposite side of the
kitchen at each end of the other main work counter, and one in the
refrigerator nacelle. Each side of the kitchen is a separate
circuit with its own breaker protection. There's also the 240VAC
high load circuit for the stovetop, convection/microwave oven, and
dishwasher on the sink side. I went all out to provide sufficient,
safe circuits and power because before I redid the kitchen there
was just one 110VAC and one 240VAC circuit for everything, and
only two poorly placed outlets.

A little TMI, I'm sure. I had too much fun designing the kitchen
and re-laying-out the electricals for the condo. Never mind all
the other projects and upgrades… :D

What a peculiar concept. Power stations usually generate three-phase AC
with an offset of 120 degrees between the phases. 120 V between one
phase and neutral and 240 V between two phases would suggest 180 degrees.

In Europe we have 230 V for one phase to neutral and 400 V between any
two phases with 120 degrees. Most residential buildings have three
phases plus neutral and our cooker is hooked up to all three. The same
goes for tankless water heaters (usually 27 kW).

RE: PESO 2020 - 057-060 - GDG

2020-04-08 Thread jcoyle
Dave's correct- we had our kitchen gutted and remodelled over 20 years ago, and
the designer had the foresight to include 7 independent outlets, plus those
for the cooktop, cooker, fridge, dishwasher, garbage grinder, and microwave,
plus spotlights in the pantry and over every work surface. There is a
fluorescent light as well in the centre of the ceiling, but we rarely need to
use it. On the topic of power, we bought a new induction cooktop last year,
which meant we had to change the wiring from 15amp to 40amp: thought it would
be horribly expensive, but a clever electrician not only did the job without
leaving any exposed ducting, but also added two more power outlets for us at a
very reasonable cost.
Thankfully, the design has worked well for us all that time, even though every
appliance has had to be changed at least once!

You can never put too many outlets in a kitchen. We have a similar arrangement
to you for the outlets and it's just enough. One of the outlets has a USB
charger built-in. We also have the dishwasher on a switch to prevent little
fingers from accidentally activating it.

We had our entire switchboard replaced when we installed the kitchen. Partly
because the old one contained asbestos and the kitchen work would have require
drilling into it, but also to get the entire house protected with earth-leakage
breakers (due again to little fingers).

That dual-voltage system must be a pain in terms of infrastructure.

Dave

PESO Heart Shaped Rock

2020-04-08 Thread Larry Colen
A couple miles south of my house, at toll house curve, there is a heart shaped
rock on the side of the road. Somebody, I presume the owner of the property
that it’s on, paints it intermittently. It often has something cute like “I’ll
always love you”. When Boris was in town, he, Olga, John and I stopped by it
and photographed it painted with bees.

On my way home from work (actually, the short way home this time), I noticed
that it had been topically repainted, so I stopped to get a quick photo.

charger built-in.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi!

Hmm. Well, we're to code for here. I rebuilt the kitchen in 2016 and everything
passed the building inspector afterwards nicely. It failed inspection before I
did the job… The building was built in 1973 and had dismal wiring in the
condominium units … I've ripped out all the electricals and upgraded everything
throughout the condo to modern spec and capabilities.

That wall behind the sink now has three standard 110VAC outlets spaced about
1.3m apart to provide power for countertop appliance use, plus the switching
for undercabinet lighting and the garbage disposal unit. They're all-weather
sealed outlets inside and all properly grounded. I have two more on the
opposite side of the kitchen at each end of the other main work counter, and
one in the refrigerator nacelle. Each side of the kitchen is a separate circuit
with its own breaker protection. There's also the 240VAC high load circuit for
the stovetop, convection/microwave oven, and dishwasher on the sink side. I
went all out to provide sufficient, safe circuits and power because before I
redid the kitchen there was just one 110VAC and one 240VAC circuit for
everything, and only two poorly placed outlets.

A little TMI, I'm sure. I had too much fun designing the kitchen and
re-laying-out the electricals for the condo. Never mind all the other projects
and upgrades… :D

I think it would be illegal to have electrical sockets that close to a sink

All made with Hasselblad 907x and the XCD 21mm f/4 lens, ISO 200 @ f/8.

Great art...? LOL! But it's fun and I'm getting to know the camera pretty well
now.
