It’d be easy in a darkroom, particularly with deep red safelights, but I
haven’t had a darkroom in 30 years. Might be able to rig the bathroom as a
temporary darkroom just to cut the paper down to size.

Biggest problem is getting enough table space to do the cutting. Sealing the
door isn’t hard. My kitchen counter is plenty of space, but the light tent
makes it really slow going. There’s no way to seal up the kitchen.. open-plan
condo.

I’ve been looking into it. It’d be much easier if I could use my big roller
cutter on a table in the bathroom.

I did actually shoot a couple of frames to make sure it worked, but I don’t
think even the magic red dot could make a photograph of my living room be all
that special.

On the subject of gripes, I briefly owned an FZ-50, which when it was stolen I
replaced it with the K-100. The FZ-50 had a wonderful user interface, handling
more like an SLR than a point and shoot, but with the nifty features of the
electronic viewfinder (like a live histogram). After the FZ-50 they went back
to the clunky PoS interface, and this being a tarted up FZ-200 suffers from
that.

Re: OT I briefly owned a Leica

2021-06-22 Thread P. J. Alling
Somewhere I have a Leica IIIc, it was given to me by a non photographer
friend on semi permanent loan.

I have two lenses for it, the collapsible 50mm and a Canon 35mm.

I found the camera to be ergonomically inferior to the Kodak Retna IIc,
it's only actual advantage being that it's easier to interchange lenses.

I think I may have shot two whole rolls of film through the thing before
the shutter jammed.

It's not a particularly special camera from a collectors viewpoint,
except it being a Leica, nor does it seem to be particularly desirable
to use, so it's basically economically irreparable.

If I ever find where I stored it I'll probably put it on a shelf for
display.

By the way having owned a Leica doesn't make you a member of an elite
group except in your own mind.  Just don't tell that to your dentist.

On 6/21/2021 11:03 PM, Larry Colen wrote:

So, I briefly owned a Leica, for Panasonic values of Leica.

I saw a friend last weekend who asked if I was interested in a broken Leica.
My first thought was that it was some old film era Leica that no longer worked,
but which might still have a usable lens. Long story short, it turns out it was
a V-Lux4, aka a Lumix FZ-200 pimped out with a red dot. It had been given to
them, but when they turned it on they got some error message, they tried
contacting Leica about getting it repaired and Leica said “It’s too old we
don’t even touch those any more”.

My friend dropped it off, the error message was that the clock needed to be
set, and there was some weirdness such that after I set the clock, I couldn’t
leave that menu, but when I power cycled it, it powered up and worked fine. So
I texted my friend that it seems to be fine, do they want it back, and it’s
going home sometime in the next day or so.

But now, I can claim to be a member of that elite group of photographers who
have owned a Leica. Woo Hoo!

Both are fine images, but Father's Day Brunch is really special.
You certainly have refined the necessary skills to create interesting and

Re: PESO 2021 - 087-088 - GDG

2021-06-22 Thread John

I need to experiment with the paper some more. The simple thing to do would
be to get a cheap 4x5in field camera and some film holders, that would save
a huge amount of time in cutting down the paper sheets and fitting into the
fussy Mamiya Press 23 film holders. :)

Do you have to do that in total darkness like a mushroom or is this something
you can do in the darkroom with a safe-light on?

On 6/21/2021 13:00:37, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote:

Interesting questions, Paul. Answering in reverse order:

POP or std - The paper requires standard development processing, you cannot
just watch the image form as it is exposed to light (POP). The happy thing is
that it works with standard paper development chemistry and processing
techniques.

Contrast - The best I can answer is "I don't know." I've never used this paper
before so have no experience with it in a darkroom situation using standard tray
development. I estimated sensitivity at ISO 6, made exposures at ISO 6 and ISO 3 as a
test. My paper developer was so far out of date (which I didn't know until I started
mixing it) that I felt the results were going to fall way off the curve ... I mixed it up
at 1:31 dilution and gave the paper 12 minutes of development time (standard would be 1:9
or 1:14 @ ~2 minutes). The resulting paper image was very, very flat, with the ISO 3
images showing more useable tonal scale. I could probably have gone to ISO 1.5 and 20
minutes processing time with that defective soup.

With the Hasselblad's 907x/CFVII 50c sensor's great tonal depth, I was able to
get a pretty decent range out of the originals that matched what I had in mind
when making the exposures, but it was a bit more work than my usual film
captures.

I need to experiment with the paper some more. The simple thing to do would be
to get a cheap 4x5in field camera and some film holders, that would save a huge
amount of time in cutting down the paper sheets and fitting into the fussy
Mamiya Press 23 film holders. :)

Re: PESO: Mustang

2021-06-22 Thread John
I think they're habituated to having people, vehicles & houses around, but
they're not tame.

The original horses were abandoned on the Carolina coast around 500 years ago. I
believe they came from shipwrecks along the coast & being left behind by failed
colonization efforts.

On 6/21/2021 04:26:44, Alan C wrote:
I agree. Are the Mustangs "people" attuned? There is a forgotten village south
of here (Kaapsehoop) where horses were simply left to fend for themselves when
people abandoned their smallholdings. The place is mostly a tourist attraction
nowadays. The horses are very tame. Enjoy your 4x4 adventures & the Mustangs.

It’s interesting the way that your crop included the metal marker, rather than
cropping in tight on the horse or doing a faux pano to crop out the signage.
It really shows that it is at the interface of settled and wild.

Spanish Mustang - one of the wild horses on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The
horses are descended from horses dumped off ships that ran aground on the
shoal waters around the North Carolina coast back during the age of
exploration (1500s)

I went down there yesterday (Juneteenth) to get a season parking permit for
the 4WD beach, because it's the only place in North Carolina I know where I
can use the 4WD on my Jeep. I'm not crazy about off-roading, but I might need
the skill if I ever get to make my photo safari to the Southwest U.S.

Plus, there are the wild horses to photograph.

And they seemed to be able to drag you away to the beach.

I inherited my father-in-law's Leica III (and his Speed Graphics 3 ¼ X 4
¼). I used both for a few years before the digital era, but my Pentax 6X7
was a lot easier to use and gave comparable results. I sold the Leica
several years ago, when I first started cleaning up and consolidating.
Anyone interested in the Speed Graphics?

2021-06-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
So …

"Orthochromatic"? Yes.

"…a feel for where sensitivity peaks on the spectral curve…" Um, not really.
I've made four exposures with it so far, and processed it in a damaged mixture
of over-age developer. I got two exposures that I kinda like. :)

It's fun, but the old Mamiya Press 23 is truly a lot of work to shoot it with.
I haven't decided where to go with this spur off my usual photography yet.
