You should not use FTP for anything but anonymous access to public sites. It sends your username and password in cleartext. Use SFTP, or secure FTP instead. It uses SSH to transfer files, and unlike standard FTP, it encrypts both commands and data. Do not confuse secure FTP with the Simple File Transfer Protocol, it has the same abbreviation but it is completely different. Re[2]: Understanding ProPhoto RGB - or not
Hello Patrice, Wednesday, December 13, 2006, 12:23:41 AM, you wrote: PLG I've imagined a lengthy, but very accurate metaphor for this: PLG Imagine you have a field of land. It is your color space. It contains PLG flowers and trees (each of them is a different color). You want to PLG measure the positions of these flowers and trees in this field (each PLG position corresponds to a given color). You can do so by dividing the PLG field in equal portions, marked by poles. You can't position a tree in PLG the field in a better precision than the distance between two poles. The PLG problem is that you only have a limited number of poles. PLG Now you are given the choice between a smaller field (sRGB color space) PLG and a larger field (ProPhoto). The smaller field is contained in the PLG larger one, so there are trees that are in the larger field, but not in PLG the smaller field (these are very saturated colors.) You want the larger PLG field to get an image correctly measured if important parts of this PLG image (a lot of the trees) are only in the larger field. PLG But this comes at a price. As you still have the same amount of poles PLG whichever field you choose (say 256x256), if the larger field is chosen, PLG more land needs to be covered, then the poles will be planted wider PLG apart from each other. You can measure more land, but with less precision. PLG If you chose to map the larger field, but all your trees are in the PLG smaller anyway, all you get, regarding YOUR trees, is a coarser precision. Thanks Patrice, that was a very good metaphor. PLG Therefore, for an image with important detail in saturated colors PLG (flowers?), consider working with a wide color space. If you're pretty PLG sure your image only contains colors with lower saturation (portrait?), PLG prefer a narrower color space and you'll have a better rendition of most PLG of your image. PLG Or, use not 256 poles in each direction, but 65536 (16 bit instead of 8) PLG throughout your workflow, and use wide color space until the very last PLG point. So there is really no silver bullet, and I should consider choosing a color space based on what kind of image I'm working with, and what the final output will be, and working with ProPhotoRGB in 16 bit is just a safe bet. Then the final step will be to convert to sRGB before saving for web. Can there be a loss of image detail/color when I perform such a conversion? Let's say I have an image which fits perfectly into sRGB. A.) - I use ACR to open the image in Photoshop using ProphotoRGB. - Apply levels, curves, sharpening etc. - Convert to sRGB then save for web. B.) - I use ACR to ipen the image in Photoshop using sRGB. - Apply levels, curves, sharpening etc. - No need to convert, this is already sRGB so just save for web. Assuming that in both cases I work in 16 bits/channel mode will there be any differences between A.) and B.)? With other words, can colorspace conversions lead to a loss of information? It would seem that in B.) there is no color space conversion, it's sRGB all the way, but there is a catch: the article says that ProPhotoRGB is Camera Raw's native colour space. So if I get this right there will be a conversion in both cases. PLG Just my 2 cents (a bit long, but these are Euro cents). Thank you Patrice, it is well worth it:) -- Attila -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Hello Rob, Wednesday, December 13, 2006, 1:03:12 AM, you wrote: DIS Commercial print services generally require sRGB souce however the DIS occasional one will provide custom profiles, in most cases sRGB will DIS be adequte. But often printer profiles for newer colour ink-jet DIS printers are wider than sRGB or Adobe RGB so choosing either of these DIS colourspaces as your source or workspace or finally converting to DIS either during save may reduce the potential quality of your prints. Understanding ProPhoto RGB - or not
Hello PDML, I came across this article: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/prophoto-rgb.shtml which is about color management. The author states that current DSLR cameras can produce colors that don't fit into the AdobeRGB color space. This is based on some ICC profiles used by Capture One and presuming that: Camera Raw within Photoshop does the same thing, except that it does so behind the scenes. His conclusion: What does this mean? Simply, that if you are using the Adobe RGB colour space with a Canon 20D, for example, (and this applies to virtually every other DSLR on the market), you are not getting a lot of the deep saturated colours that the camera's sensor is capable of capturing. While I'm still learning color management, I have some doubts about this. AFAIK two color spaces are commonly supported in digital camreas: sRGB and AdobeRGB. If I set a camera to XY color space, I would not expect to get colors which are outside of that color space. Maybe with some very wild image manipulations one could manage to hit the limits of AdobeRGB, but I doubt that such an image would print well. So does this article have any valid points? -- Attila -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

OT: Optimal charging current
Hello PDML, I have a question for our electrical savy members: how does one determine the optimal charging current for a given type of rechargeable battery? The long story: I bought the LaCrosse BC-900 charger, it came with a set of 2000 mAh rechargeable NiMH batteries. The manual says the recommended charging current is 200 mA (the minimum supported by the charger), with a charging time of ~10 hr. This seems a bit too long for me. I can go as high as 1800 mA for rapid charging ~70 min. In case of overheating the charging will be stopped automatically, this is a nice feature, but I'm not eager to find out how it works in practice:) I think I could choose a current between 200 mA and 1800 mA, which would be safe and faster, but which one? And how would this affect the lifetime of the batteries? Attila

Re: OT Is this a hardware or software problem
Hello Dave, bcin PC went in for parisite removal, bigger HD and a DVD bcin writer. Everythibng was going well, i bcin was able to access my internet etc bcin until this morning. I used the newer program he bcin installed,Nero (i had an older Roxio burn bcin program he took off). Nero and Roxio on the same PC together are known to cause problems. If Roxio was not uninstalled completely _before_ the installation of Nero this may be your case. I used Nero with different CD and DVD burners for years, and never had any problem with it. bcin I added bcin some photos to an ongoing CD, and ever since my internet has been screwed up. bcin I can access and have the system open and verify me,but i cannot get it to access any bcin links. The only link it will go to is my bcin caughtinmotion web site mail service. The little monitors bcin in the task bar stay black. Only bcin in the website servise do i get the bcin blue monitors. This is very strange, the burner programs shouldn't interfere with the internet connection settings. Make sure you don't have a spyware/trojan/dialer program on your system. This looks like a software problem. Good luck for hunting;-) Attila

Re: OT Survey - Computer Desk-top Size
Hello Rob, RS So given the prevalence of panos in PAW/PESO of late and the comments relating RS to images not fitting on screens I thought that it may be a good idea to see RS what everyone is using screen size and resolution wise. Then we can determine RS how to best size images that are destined to be displayed to the group. 17 CRT (16 viewable) 1024 x 768 pixels I use the Colorvision Spyder for calibration. Attila

Re[2]: OT: Linux/WINE
DF For instance, we've found that when our Windows code calls DF closesocket() on a SOCK_STREAM socket (but not on a SOCK_DGRAM socket), DF wineserver refuses to actually close and release the socket for several DF minutes, so if you stop our app, you can't start it for several DF minutes, or its bind() or listen() call will fail because the socket we DF closed still exists and still owns the port. If this happens only with SOCK_STREAM sockets, then maybe your app has data pending to be sent when it calls closesocket(). If you want that pending data to be sent, call shutdown() to close the connection before calling closesocket(). If you don't care about that data, just call WSACleanup() before your app exits. WSACleanup() should free all socket resources regardless of their state. Good luck;) Attila

Re: Single camera bags
Because i don't like to change lenses once i'm, at a show,i plan on taking the istD and either the A28 or 28-105 for taking presentation shots. I thought a bag that could clip on a belt would do the trick. Hi Dave, I use the Lowepro Nova 1 AW camera bag to carry my MZ-6 and the 28-105 mounted on it. The bag has two adjustable padded dividers, so there is room for two extra lenses, or other accessories. It has belt loops, and even an optional Belt Buckle (which I don't own), a large front pocket and two mesh side pockets. Attila

Hello boris, Attila, it is competent, this image, but just like those of myself it begs this question - what is the center of interest here?
