As many have mentioned, this is one of the most interesting threads for a
while and I'm glad Frank brought it up.

My initial reaction was, photography is inherently sexual when pointed at
people. How can it not be when it is a single image focused on a subject. It
wants me to look and I love that. But I thought about it some more

What I admire about Frank's photographs (and not only his, many others on
PDML) is the humanising aspect of them. Those couriers taking risks in
traffic, a blur that you try to avoid - he shows them après-couriering.
Their bravado and frankly, well-toned bodies, are something to admire. That
isn't sexualising. I am admiring their life force

So too with Alina. She is no more a object in front of Bruce's camera than
Frank's buddies. When she throws in a gorgeous handstand and writes about
herself in such a positive way, you know it is that she is as much
co-creator as Bruce, with his consumate command of his skills.

Do I think my photos are objectifying? Perhaps. I never really know these
people anywhere like Frank or Bruce. Sometimes, rarely, I have a chat.
Mostly it is about the pleasure of observation. Which is why I steered my
blurb along this theme of a brief connection. They are no longer just
elements in a composition. Wide lens, 2m or less, and I can't help but feel
a jolt when they make eye contact. Such a thrilling moment. I really can't
pull back from the shot thinking about rules or balance when the chance
presents itself, and really couldn't shoot any other way.

Re: TA

2013-11-26 Thread David Savage
I'm weighing in on this one quite late, but here goes.

Bruce was mentioned in the OP, so I just want to say that frankly (no
pun intended) his recent nude work is less sexual than the
clothed/implied nude stuff that I've been doing recently. Nudity
doesn't always equate to sex.

As to the question of the gender/subject imbalance, it's not rocket
surgery: most photographers a male, most males like girls. Our lizard
brains dictate that we shoot that which we find pleasing to look at,
be it sunsets, flowers, cats or women.

But there is more to it than that. Females as a photographic subject
are easier to shoot gives you more options. You can make them look
strong, demure, angry, sexy etc and the images will work.

Not too many male models appreciate looking demure effeminate. The
most common looks for photos of males are moody, angry strong. That
gets boring IMO (I've not shot male nudes, but I have done a few shirt
off portrait/figure shoots).

Also it's more difficult to find blokes willing to get their wang out
in a photo those that do tend to have exhibitionist tendencies (this
is based on the experiences of a couple of photographer friends who
worked with guys on fine art nude projects).

I've tried to organize shoots with guys to get more testosterone into
my portfolio of studio work, but the talent pool is a lot smaller, the
types of people I really want to shoot (male fitness types) are
flighty unreliable. Iif you think women are the only ones with body
image issues, you've never met a bodybuilder between competitions.

Cheers,

Dave

I also disagree with statements that the female body is more
aesthetically pleasing than the male. It's different but not more
beautiful. Some of the best nudes I've seen are of men.

I can be sexually aroused by a woman's body but that's not a problem
 either.

It's that we simply don't show male nudes here. It doesn't have to
be 50/50; I don't know what it should be, just that the ratio here
is not right. That's treating men and women differently when it comes
to body portrayals and while I won't say it's wrong I will say I
 don't like it.

I understand your point Frank, but I think that Paul has a valid

many. I don't object to either male or female nudes really. Its
2013, not 1892, but that's me. Mind you this is also coming from
the guy that wishes more women wore dresses and knew how to cook (a
dying breed), so maybe I'm just old fashioned in my own ways. I
guess you object to women being the focus. Fair enough, but for
what its worth not many people desire to see naked men. When it
comes to women though, even completely straight females seem to
appreciate the female form. I've had countless women tell me that
they vastly prefer to look at other females nude, so maybe there is
something to that. I'm not gay or female so I'm generally not
attracted to men. Nudes are a form of fine art photography that
have stretched back to the pictorialism era and have dominated
works of art since men started painting on caves and throwing
pottery. Actually I think that there really isn't objectification
going on and that is your own hangups about nudity projecting here,
but I don't know you so maybe I'm totally off base. This is an age
old debate that I think our society would benefit from moving on
from and becoming more accepting of the human form.

I like the composition but I reckon the people need to be blurred even

As shot they are distractingly almost, but not quite, identifiable.

THanks Bob.

The tied goes out far enough that there is just sand on the floor.
aside from a few drips from the cave ceiling it was very dry dark in

The right side entrance had quite a deep tide pool/puddle so we
entered via the left side opening.

I'll just add that if you think focus is critical now, wait until you
have a stupidly high MP count.

2 things that routinely spoil my D800 (FF, 36MP) shots are
diffraction slight back or front focus. Downsize the images to a

Yes, the center AF point is the most accurate, but since you are
focusing on eyes for portraits, and you likely have the camera in
portrait orientation, the two straightline AF points that lie beyond
the 9-grid are your probable choices. Then when you switch from

 Good stuff, Walt!

The first thing I'd say is be sure that both of you are quite clear on
your goals for the shoot. It's TF (trade-for), so each of you should
come away with something of value. You are going to get experience,
and some possible portfolio shots. She's going to get ...? Perhaps
some Facebook profile shots is enough. Maybe a headshot for her
LinkedIn profile. Bring a list of specific shots you need to get to be
 sure you meet the goals.

Dress, makeup hair can make a huge difference to the quality of the
shots, but may be a little premature to worry about in a first
photoshoot. But I prefer my subjects to wear solid colours; anyway
avoiding busy patterns. If you want decent portraits, have her follow
the makeup suggestions in the reading list below. For the best
results, give her the Bob Pardue suggestions.

If you want to just concentrate on getting candid-looking shots, then
you must keep her occupied with something so you can shoot while her
attention is on the task. Eg: shooting pool, or preparing a drink, or
even just reading a menu. She could be conversing with someone. If
she's simply standing or sitting around awkwardly you'll get awkward
 looking shots.

Don't get hung-up with technical stuff. Especially if you venture into
 trying posed shots:
 - don't let her get bored while you adjust things;
 - talk to her about what you're doing, and show her the occasional shot;
 - if you screw something up, just let it go and carry on. _Do not_
stare at the screen and say damn, that's awful or anything like that
-- she'll think she did something wrong and start getting uptight.

Praise her a lot. Make sure she's comfortable.
Keep it light and above all fun. Make one of your goals to get a
 follow-up shoot.

 Technical:

#1: don't use that fecking popup flash--I beg you. Tape it shut. :-)

 - since you're using only ambient light be aware of the effect it's
having on her face. Avoid locating her where she'll get racoon eyes or
hollow cheeks, for example. You can use the ambient lighting for you
by positioning the subject until it's flattering.

 - WB: set it to one of the fixed settings, _not_ auto. The preview
image will be more useful to you if WB is set to the ambient light
temp; in your case likely Fluorescent or Tungsten. If the light is
mixed, find locations in the room to shoot where it isn't mixed if you
 can.

 - I always shoot a grey card to get a WB reference. If you don't have
one, find something neutral in the area and shoot that. Shoot RAW so
you can fine-adjust the WB later on.

 - focus on her nearest eye.

 - prefer a faster shutter speed, 1/60th and preferably faster. Open
your aperture and/or go to higher ISOs to accomodate that.

 - metering: try different things. The light is going to be low and
rather hard, and you want to get the exposure on her face good, so you
might need to use center-weighted or spot and expose to her face, lock
the AE and shoot. Practice that beforehand if you haven't done it
 before or often.

The security of the cash flow to the iTunes store.

If you could copy songs off of your iOS device, you could share them with

good thought, that could be a factor in the lack of a generally open file

there'd be no such threat from being able to copy the same files in the

Water waves are often not particularly contrasting, and if you're
echoing water waves, this seems like an effective composition. In
addition, by not highlighting the hair, you focus more attention on the
face/shoulder. (It's called Waves, but my eye gets drawn to the face,
making the hair a punctuation.) If you really want to focus on the
hair, you'd need to make the face less compelling.

My question about the composition is whether that shutter speed is what
you want. Probably don't want it any slower or it'd be too blurry, but
maybe faster for the sharp/frozen effect.

backlighting her hair -- not too much; or side-lighting her hair,
parallel with her shoulders from camera right. Backlighting her hair

Moonrise for the date wasn't until after 3 AM (he doesn't give an
exact time of the exposure). They were not far from Anchorage, AK, so
skyglow could have provided some ambient light, as well.

 Full text of the image:
 The Lily Red Experience

My wife I busted out of Anchorage on our much-anticipated September aurora

hunt, an event that marks the end of the busy Alaskan summer season. We
headed northeast up the Glenn Highway, took a left at the Lake Louise
junction, then bounced down a pothole-filled side road. We popped up the
truck camper along one of my favorite ponds that dot the region and stepped

out into crisp, clear and calm conditions. Stardate: September 13, 2012.

The smell of fall was in the air and, as my eyes adjusted to the darkness,
an aurora glow became apparent on the far northern horizon. Time to go to
work, although it felt more like play. The Milky Way galaxy stretched upward

against the deep black new moon (ie, no moon) skies while the bright
pinpoint of Jupiter shone like a beacon in the V-shaped pattern of Taurus
the Bull (just above the clouds). Further above, the tight but bright Seven

Sisters of the Pleiades open cluster twinkled prominently.

I set the exposure time for 20-seconds to burn in the starfield and, lo and

behold, a red glow appeared. I have seen the coveted red northern lights
this bright to the naked eye in the past but they are very rare. In this
case, the camera gets much credit for acting like night-vision goggles and
revealing what the less sensitive human eye has a harder time detecting. To

complete this composition, while the camera shutter was still locked open, I

used my little headlamp to paint the lily pads with a beam of light. Lily
Red set the mood for a great trip.

 Photograph Information:

 Year: 2012
 Aperture: f2.8
 Shutter: 20 sec
 ISO: 4000
Shot with a Nikon Digital using a Nikon 17-35mm/f2.8 lens.

It sorta looks to me like he ran a lighten wand over the right hand far
shore. It gets grey and fuzzy before going back to black silhouetted trees.

Re: K5 RAW file size - yow!

2013-02-06 Thread David Savage
I had, and still have, an impressive collection of FA, FA* Limiteds.

I didn't jump ship to join the FF bandwagon. I jumped ship because
Pentax's cameras couldn't do what I needed (I had a K20D at the time).

Around the time of the D700's release I had been shooting a lot of
long exposure night sky scenes...and then spending several hours in
Photoshop cleaning up the sensor heat bloom that stained all my shots.

The D300/D300s had the same issue, the equivalent APS Canon at that
time had similar problems.

When the D700 came out I went to the official product launch here. I
was suitably impressed. The metering, AF, flash high ISO all just
worked in a way that Pentax never seemed to be able to match. Also the
sensor didn't turn magenta at exposures longer than 5 minutes.

My going full frame was a by-product of getting a camera that enabled
me to shoot what I wanted without having to clean up the mess the
camera made in post.

I see a lot of people buying FF cameras simply because the sensor is
bigger. They still shoot the same crap they always did don't really
get the full benefits of what the larger sensor can offer.

Realistically, you probably need to commit to spending nearly 10K to
get a decent compliment of lenses for the D800 and the computer

 well.

David's 5 lenses total about $7800 (BH prices) so it looks like my
ballpark estimate (including computer/storage upgrades) was pretty
close. With the D800/E body at $3K you are looking at $11K outlay.

Now assuming you are a Pentaxian with a complement of full frame
lenses already at your disposal, I would say that a Pentax full frame
body that comes in with a $2500-3000 price tag would be a relative
bargain, compared to dumping everything and going Nikon to get your
full frame fix. In fact, you'd have a relative savings of $7800+ to
rationalize buying a few of the FA Limiteds that you don't already
 have.

All of this is assuming that the Pentax full frame will perform
comparably to the Nikons, which remains to be seen. But for that much
money, I can afford to be quite content for QUITE a while.

The guy who did the ones you linked to swears that they're not
photoshopped. I'd really like to know how he does it if that's the
case. Short of physically touching the model with the lights, I can't
see how he does it.

I think he shoots the model, then the light then dresses the model
in post like this guy:

Re: K5 RAW file size - yow!

2013-02-04 Thread David Savage
Basically I've notice that the aperture sweet spot is even more
critical at such a high MP count.

When I migrated to Nikon I bought their best lenses (the holy trinity
14-24, 24-70, 780-200, ptus their 50 f1.4 85 f1.4).

On the D700 I never really had any image quality issues with them.
Those same lenses on the D800 are noticeably softer away from their
respective sweet spots. f5.6 - soft, f8 - shaper, f11 sweet, f16 -
softer...

Also the high resolution shows up flaws in your hand holding
technique. The old rule of thumb of shutter speed being the inverse of
the focal length doesn't really work any more. Double it to be sure,
or use a tripod.

The D800/D800E manual came with a series of instructions on how to
maintain sharpness detail.

attracted my attention, a bit of the gear-head in me and an interest
in where the best vantage points are at the Sydney International
airport (which I have easy access to).

It was a pleasant but way too early morning, there was a lot of mutual
fondling going on, who's is biggest etc but I managed to edge myself
out of the scrum. All Nikon shooters but for me and a lone Canon
owner. There was an impressive array of Nikon gear on show though to
my mind it was pretty underutilized on the day. The vantage points
were limited but have possibilities, I will explore them further when
 I get time.

 I shot mainly with the A*300/2.8 + 1.7AFTC and my Sigma 70-200/2.8, I
made a couple of wide shots at the conveners suggestion but found the
images somewhat boring. All hand held, K5 + Grip + spare batt + gps
unit + big lens and TC gets heavy quickly but is still a great combo.

The best vantage point changes with the wind, literally. Sydney has
two parallel and one cross runways and this morning traffic direction
shifted twice in a couple of hours. Night shooting is worth a
investigating though. One of the most difficult to access vantage
points and probably the best for night trails is well over 1km from
parking and involves trekking along a very busy road where there is no
pedestrian path, but hey, photography wasn't meant to be easy.

It snowed a bit this morning and I had chance to test out the K-01 for snow

and the ability to zoom in on the screen, focusing was very fast and easy. I
was able to get clear shots, move on, get more. Focus peaking is a HUGE
advantage for this kind of work because it allows you to see what is in
focus and fine tune the focus to maximize DOF. It made the morning very
productive - in about 2 hours of shooting I got at least 10 good images.
Image quality from the K-01 seems to be right there with the K-5.

I put 4 shots from this morning on my blog, will be posted a couple more
 batches this week as well:

 http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/

 Permalink:

 http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/2013-snow-crystals-round-2

All images were shot with the K-01, a Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX macro, and
extension. The snow was very variable in size today, so I used all the
extension that I have (about 230mm) for a few shots, and only about 50mm for
a few other. Plus everything in between.

I should comment that the second crystal in that post was very small and was
shot with 230mm of extension - tubes and bellows. That is where the
focusing peaking really shined. WIth all that extension a finder is so dark
you can barely see, and with live view and no focus peaking it is very
difficult to see what is in focus. The K-01 made it simple and easy to focus
 on that little bugger.

 intermixed with this though.)

So, I was wondering if anybody would be carrying the only camera
body in a messenger bag (when, presumably, you want to be able
to take it out and use quickly) - separate from any lens.
If yes, - what would be the reason why you'd do that?

The only possible argument I can see is that it would be quicker
to choose the lens (so that you don't need to detach what you
have on first). I'd think that it'd be better to have something
always attached, - at least you'd be more prepared for ~50% of
shots (if you carry two lenses).

 What do you think?

get that confirmation at first, the flash (in PTTL mode) goes off full
capacity, as if the PTTL did not work, yielding extremely overlit
images. In those cases, often, on the subsequent shots, there is
 no flash confirmation symbol.

All those problems can be fixed by tweaking the hotshoe in the socket
(sliding it slightly in or out), but it takes a few times to find the
 right position.
I am thinking if this can be fixed by cleaning the contacts.

What are the options of cleaning the contacts besides the obvious of
using a q-tip soaked in isopropanol?

Any other thoughts on what else might be causing such hot-shoe issues?

 Interesting.

I've been using VueScan since 2000 ... the original software for my
Polaroid SprintScan and then Minolta Scan Dual II were both so bad it
wasn't funny, and VueScan has always done a great job. I have driven
all my scanners, including the now-ancient Epson 2450, with VueScan
for years and find it to be far better than almost everything else
 I've tried.

I have no problem with the files vuescan produced, it just isn't a
very easy piece of software to use.

Thanks Bruce.

The skin still has pore detail in the full res image. Like you, I look
at a lot of over cooked images too.

My general retouch technique is spot healing brush/patch tool for
blemishes, the clone stamp on lighten with a very low opacity (about
10% or less) for under the eyes, and the final skin smoothing is based
on this tutorial:

http://youtu.be/Fv4L1-TaGhI

I skip the 2 Gaussian blur steps and just reduce the skin smoothing
adjustment layers opacity at the end.

Dave, I don't feel this displays over-smoothed skin, but I view a lot
of fashion images where unrealistically uniform skin is expected, so I
 have a bias. :-)

But I also note that one cannot really tell if skin detail was lost to
 post-processing in a 3/4 length shot that's less than 1000px high,
like here. Assuming there is fine detail in the original, it's all
been smoothed by image reduction to that size anyway.

The beauty dish mounted just above head height and aimed close to
on-axis produces very little shadow detail and so, as you note, does a
pretty good job of skin smoothing by itself.

I assume that you don't blur the skin, but use the healing tools,
mid-opacity clone stamp on Lighten, frequency separation, maybe a good
 plugin, etc.

 G'day Rick,

I did indeed smooth the skin in post. I'd be interested to hear if
others thing it's too much. I like to think I'm pretty judicious in
the level of smoothing I use.

Also I've noticed that the beauty dish used like this washes out the
 skin which is quite flattering.

 Thanks for your comments.

Dave, did you smooth her skin digitally? If not, she's got astonishingly
clear skin. If so, it's a bit overdone. Any more and she'd look like a
 mannequin, and they aren't threatening.

 G'day Trendsetters,

I had a bit of a shoot with one of my favorite models last weekend.
Here is one of the images:

Single strobe with a beauty dish, high camera left. Shot on the D800
 with a 50mm f1.4.

Enjoy, and as always, comments critiques welcome.

 Cheers,

 Dave
