That’s what it was. A TB is $10 more a month. I went with 20 GB. Probably won’t

Finally getting around to signing up for Lightroom. The website indicates a TB

I’m gonna go with the Lightroom Classic option, at least for the time being.
But curious, could you manage your older images Photos with Raw power? Would

That said, this almost convinces me to go with Photos, which I have been using
exclusively in processing my iPhone photos. And I will continue to do so going
forward, at least for my iPhone photos, and possibly even with photos created
with a camera. (I still have two, both Fuji, And I’m tempted by the X-E4, for
which I have one excellent lens.)

But I still have tons of photos—well, not tons compared to you guys 浪—that have
been processed and organized with Lightroom. I would want local storage, which
means the Classic bundle, though it’s very unlikely that I’d use anything but
Lightroom. But I believe it is $20 month.

Again, thanks to everyone who responded.

What Adobe product?

2023-06-10 Thread Eric Weir

I’m going to be upgrading to a new Mac, silicon not Intel. I own a copy of
Lightroom.I will need to upgrade. Sticking to Adobe there are three options:
Elements, Lightroom, and Lightroom Classic. I have never used Photoshop. Don’t
see myself using it down the road. Would Lightroom, i.e., without with
Photoshop be equivalent to the copy of Lightroom that I own and itself probably
has more power features that I need/will use? What about Elements?

My photography for some time now has been iPhone photography. I’ve considered
just relying on Apple’s Photos app for editing. But with ought Lightroom I
assume I’d lose access to the catalogue of photos that have been edited and
managed with Lightroom.

Interested in experience and thoughts of others that would help me decide.

Have you thought about paying a scanning service. I can’t say I have

Experience with the amazing—to me, of course—Fuji XQ1 compact, which I
purchased to keep my kit light for a 2015 bike tour in Italy, caused me to
start graduating away from Pentax. I kept the XQ1, purchased a Fuji XM1 and a
Fuji XF 27/2.8 lens, and gradually sold off my Pentax bodies and lenses.

Subsequently, when on a month spent on the Blue ridge Parkway I found myself
without batteries for the Fuji equipment when both of the battery chargers
purchased for the trip failed to work, I resorted to my iPhone 6s as my backup
camera and was stunned at the quality of the images I got.

On three trips to the Big Bend area since then the iPhone has been my only
camera. I have one photo from those trips enlarged and framed on my wall now.
There could be more. The only thing I longed for with the 6s was a telephoto
lens to bring some of the distant landscape scenes of Big Bend up closer.

Recently I upgraded the 6s to an iPhone 12 Pro, mainly for the telephoto lens
it provides. I find it helpful in other settings but it won’t meet the need I
feel in Big Bend landscapes. Should I get the opportunity to return to Big Bend
I will consider going back to Pentax for this:
https://us.ricoh-imaging.com/product/vm-6x21-wp-monocular/

It’ll perhaps be admitting my lack of technical sophistication, but I find the
editing capabilities of iPhone cameras and Apple’s Photos app fully adequate to
my needs. I will hang onto LightRoom as a way of preserving the editing I did
with my Pentax and Fuji photos but rely on Photos from here on out as my
primary photo editing and organizing software.

What were you referring to, Paul, when you mentioned the 13 Pro Max’s “phone
and web browser functions”?

Sorry for your losses, Larry. Your mother looks like an interesting woman. Bet
she had an interesting life. Regarding the job, sometimes losses, perhaps
especially painful ones, open the door to other opportunities. Go for what

Re: Via Dolorosa | Psyche Films

2021-03-28 Thread Eric Weir

Thanks for the link, Bob. As for my question, I was transfixed by the video,
which I viewed through to completion before reading the accompanying article. I
kept asking myself, “What is this? What’s going on?” I expected at some point
the answer would be revealed, but it never was. Not in the way I expected
anyway. In that sense the video is not representational.

But in another sense it is. Whatever is going on, we see that it involves a
huge coordinated effort. Those focused on are intensely engaged. They strain,
they grimace, they sweat. Some seem almost to be in pain. Others are caught up
differently, as witnesses, some apparently in awe. The only indication that the
occasion is a religious one is that a few times people are seen crossing
themselves. The subject is not the activity, nor the meaning it has for the
participants, neither of which is revealed, but simply the fact that it has
meaning, intense meaning, that people are transported.

Rodero’s project, which on the surface might seem more conventionally
representational, seems to have a similar dual aspect. The context is obviously
Christian, and the photos are captioned, but the scenes and the dress of the
people portrayed are strange, puzzling, unexplained. Yet whatever the
occasions, they are obviously engaging and meaningful to those portrayed.
Explanations are not needed to see that.

My own religiosity, if it can be called that, is eclectic. I have around among
agnosticism, Quakerism, Episcopalianism (Anglicanism), Buddhism, Hinduism.
Lately drawn to a vague, noninstitutional Christianity for which I get support
from Richard Rhor’s Center for Action and Contemplation.

I can’t contribute anything to the discussion of bokeh, but using the above

You have a collection called “favorites.” If I had a collection of photos like

much that’s so good.

One thing I especially liked, though far from the only thing. is the way you

You reminded me how much there is to see—if we look, and are able.

Thanks to everyone who responded—Ralf, John in Brisbane, and especially Godfrey
and Larry about spot removal in light room.

A progress report: I’m proceeding slowly. I did four slides yesterday and four
today. Just getting familiar with the mechanics, e.g., defining the crop in the
preview for the scan. I tried color correction on a couple slides turned out
well on one, horrible on the other.

Am I correct in taking it that “Infrared clean” in VueScan is dust and scratch
removal? Since John suggested doing sharpening before dust and scratch removal,
I think I’ll try sharpening in the scan and save dust and removal for LR.

Scanning slides

2020-05-05 Thread Eric Weir

Emerging from lurking to ask for help.

A couple days ago I got out a shoebox of slides from a trip to Russia 20 years
ago. A few were shown to the group I traveled with a month or so after we
returned home. Other than that I have done nothing with them. As a result I am
unable to identify many of the subjects and scenes. Nevertheless, some are
interesting, if not good photography. (They were shot with a Pentax K1000 and a
fast 50mm lens, the only lens I took on the trip. Not sure of the film. Best
guess is Fuji Velvia 100.)

I would like to start scanning a selection of the slides. I have an Epson
Perfection V500 Photo scanner. I have always found the Epson scanning software
difficult. I recently forked over $100 for a VueScan license and have found it
much easier to work with. That said, yesterday I watched a video demonstrating
scanning with SilverFast and was impressed. Among other things, It can
eliminate dust and scratches, do color correction, and scans to a Raw file. And
the price is reasonable. I’d appreciate opinions on SilverFast vs. VueScan

I have no experience scanning slides. one question is how to orient the slides
in the scanner, i.e., which side of the film should be up and which down. My
slides have the date and frame number on one side and “this side toward
screen.” should that side face up or down on the scanning table?

Random comments or advice about scanning slides would be welcome too.

Thanks,

Agree with Ralf. “Great stuff. The lot of it.”

But one I especially liked was “Pines.” And “Prayer Service at St. Michaels”
caused me to go shopping for a *ist DS, my first digital camera, which, as I

Perhaps it’s the other way around. I vaguely recall a report to the effect that
online giving to people financially distressed, e.g., through Patreon, has

Extreme landscape photographer Thomas Cooper

2019-10-04 Thread Eric Weir
Interesting article in this weeks New Yorker (10/7/19) about the landscape
photographer Thomas Cooper and his “Atlas of Emptiness and Extremity” project.

A quote that gives a sense of the character of his project and way of working:

“In setting the parameters of his project, Cooper made a series of vows: to
work exclusively outdoors, to make only a single exposure in each place, and to
pursue his vision at the expense of all else.”

Merely a hint at his extremity.

Thanks, John. I’m confused. Not that you’re confusing, just that the limits of
my knowledge are again being tested. So the 72 dpi figure has nothing to do
with the size of print that can be obtained? The latter is a function of the
available pixels and the dimensions of the print?

In your third paragraph I don’t understand “suggesting a crop to 2016 pixels
high (for a 10 x 20 print).” I can increase the ppi for a given dimension of
print, e.g., 10 x 20, by cropping the image? My assumption would be that the
only way to increase the ppi would be to reduce the size of the print.

Your last paragraph: You think I can get a decent 10 x 20 print from the image
I described?

Thanks, Godfrey. Guess I’ll adjust the size of the test print downward.

WIAI, I take it “ppi" is "pixels per inch.” Data on this image as displayed in
Dropbox indicates 72 “dots per inch.” is that the same as "pixels per inch”?

Printing

2019-09-04 Thread Eric Weir

I have never printed a single photo. I'd like to give it a try. With this
image, just as a test:
<https://www.flickr.com/photos/eeweir/48678438307/in/dateposted-public/lightbox/>
 It’s 2.5 MB, 4032 x 2268 pixels

I’ve checked out printing services via this review:
<https://www.pcmag.com/roundup/353850/the-best-photo-printing-services>
AdoramaPix and Nations Photo Lab appealed. But I see printing is now available
via Flickr. Thought I’d give it a try.

Wondering about a 10 x 20 or 12 x 24 paper print, lustre finish. With an image
this size, what do you think?

Also interested in comparison of Flickr to other printing services, e.g.,
AdoramaPix, Nations Photo Lab, or other.

Thanks,

Thanks for sharing this, Dave. Love the images, especially of horses at work. A
shame it was the last year.

I experienced the very end of my grandfather’s horse farming. I remember the
sound of the horses munching their grain in their stalls in the barn after a
day’s work.

I wish it could have continued. Maybe it will return.

I’ve installed Malwarebytes on my phone. (As well as MacBook and iPad.) It
flags incoming calls from known scammers. Really don’t need it though, as I
never answer calls from anyone not in my contacts list. If they leave a

Beautiful cat, John. Sorry for your loss. I've recently fallen in love with a

When I don’t know how to do something, I find utilizing support available on
the Apple website, especially support communities, or Googling, gets me the
information I need pretty quickly.

Go to > Settings > Passwords and Accounts > Your Account > Mail > Tap the

It's not "stoopid" iPhone. It's not "stoopid" anybody. You just don't know how
to do it. Most of the time that's the case. At least in my case.

I don't understand why you’d purchase an expensive phone and the deactivate one
it's most convenient functions.

If you switched your account to IMAP you could get mail on both your devices.

Do you know what kind of email account you have, i.e., POP or IMAP? If POP,
after messages are downloaded to a device they are deleted from the server, and
this are not available to other devices. IMAP synchronizes mailboxes between
devices.

I know nothing about Android, but in the Photos app on an iPhone you can do
some of the same basic editing that can be done in Lightroom. Perhaps in the
corresponding app on Android that can also be done.

GESO: Favorites from Lake Superior's Painted Rocks

2018-09-26 Thread Eric Weir

Four favorites from an album from a cruise along Lake Superior’s Painted Rocks
lakeshore. All were taken with an iPhone.

In not being faithful to it, I’m mindful of Cotty once suggesting that I
identify the one image from a large set that told the entire story. I aspire to
that. It will take more practice.

Thanks, Stan. I might have noted that the negative reviews concerned features
that would not interest me, either. I sensed that the device was well maid, and
that was what attracted me.
