I’m going to be upgrading to a new Mac, silicon not Intel. I own a copy of Lightroom.I will need to upgrade. Sticking to Adobe there are three options: Elements, Lightroom, and Lightroom Classic. I have never used Photoshop. Don’t see myself using it down the road. Would Lightroom, i.e., without with Photoshop be equivalent to the copy of Lightroom that I own and itself probably has more power features that I need/will use? What about Elements? My photography for some time now has been iPhone photography. I’ve considered just relying on Apple’s Photos app for editing. But with ought Lightroom I assume I’d lose access to the catalogue of photos that have been edited and managed with Lightroom. I kept the XQ1, purchased a Fuji XM1 and a Fuji XF 27/2.8 lens, and gradually sold off my Pentax bodies and lenses. Subsequently, when on a month spent on the Blue ridge Parkway I found myself without batteries for the Fuji equipment when both of the battery chargers purchased for the trip failed to work, I resorted to my iPhone 6s as my backup camera and was stunned at the quality of the images I got. On three trips to the Big Bend area since then the iPhone has been my only camera. I have one photo from those trips enlarged and framed on my wall now. There could be more. The only thing I longed for with the 6s was a telephoto lens to bring some of the distant landscape scenes of Big Bend up closer. Recently I upgraded the 6s to an iPhone 12 Pro, mainly for the telephoto lens it provides. I find it helpful in other settings but it won’t meet the need I feel in Big Bend landscapes. Should I get the opportunity to return to Big Bend I will consider going back to Pentax for this: https://us.ricoh-imaging.com/product/vm-6x21-wp-monocular/ It’ll perhaps be admitting my lack of technical sophistication, but I find the editing capabilities of iPhone cameras and Apple’s Photos app fully adequate to my needs. I will hang onto LightRoom as a way of preserving the editing I did with my Pentax and Fuji photos but rely on Photos from here on out as my primary photo editing and organizing software. Re: Via Dolorosa | Psyche Films
Thanks for the link, Bob. As for my question, I was transfixed by the video, which I viewed through to completion before reading the accompanying article. I kept asking myself, “What is this? What’s going on?” I expected at some point the answer would be revealed, but it never was. Not in the way I expected anyway. In that sense the video is not representational. But in another sense it is. Whatever is going on, we see that it involves a huge coordinated effort. Those focused on are intensely engaged. They strain, they grimace, they sweat. Some seem almost to be in pain. Others are caught up differently, as witnesses, some apparently in awe. The only indication that the occasion is a religious one is that a few times people are seen crossing themselves. The subject is not the activity, nor the meaning it has for the participants, neither of which is revealed, but simply the fact that it has meaning, intense meaning, that people are transported. Rodero’s project, which on the surface might seem more conventionally representational, seems to have a similar dual aspect. The context is obviously Christian, and the photos are captioned, but the scenes and the dress of the people portrayed are strange, puzzling, unexplained. Yet whatever the occasions, they are obviously engaging and meaningful to those portrayed. Explanations are not needed to see that. My own religiosity, if it can be called that, is eclectic. I have around among agnosticism, Quakerism, Episcopalianism (Anglicanism), Buddhism, Hinduism. Lately drawn to a vague, noninstitutional Christianity for which I get support from Richard Rhor’s Center for Action and Contemplation. Thanks to everyone who responded—Ralf, John in Brisbane, and especially Godfrey and Larry about spot removal in light room. A progress report: I’m proceeding slowly. I did four slides yesterday and four today. Just getting familiar with the mechanics, e.g., defining the crop in the preview for the scan. I tried color correction on a couple slides turned out well on one, horrible on the other. Am I correct in taking it that “Infrared clean” in VueScan is dust and scratch removal? Scanning slides
Emerging from lurking to ask for help. A couple days ago I got out a shoebox of slides from a trip to Russia 20 years ago. A few were shown to the group I traveled with a month or so after we returned home. Other than that I have done nothing with them. As a result I am unable to identify many of the subjects and scenes. Nevertheless, some are interesting, if not good photography. (They were shot with a Pentax K1000 and a fast 50mm lens, the only lens I took on the trip. Not sure of the film. Best guess is Fuji Velvia 100.) I would like to start scanning a selection of the slides. I have an Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner. I have always found the Epson scanning software difficult. I recently forked over $100 for a VueScan license and have found it much easier to work with. That said, yesterday I watched a video demonstrating scanning with SilverFast and was impressed. Among other things, It can eliminate dust and scratches, do color correction, and scans to a Raw file. And the price is reasonable. I’d appreciate opinions on SilverFast vs. VueScan I have no experience scanning slides. one question is how to orient the slides in the scanner, i.e., which side of the film should be up and which down. My slides have the date and frame number on one side and “this side toward screen.” should that side face up or down on the scanning table? Random comments or advice about scanning slides would be welcome too. Thanks, John. I’m confused. Not that you’re confusing, just that the limits of my knowledge are again being tested. So the 72 dpi figure has nothing to do with the size of print that can be obtained? The latter is a function of the available pixels and the dimensions of the print? In your third paragraph I don’t understand “suggesting a crop to 2016 pixels high (for a 10 x 20 print).” I can increase the ppi for a given dimension of print, e.g., 10 x 20, by cropping the image? My assumption would be that the only way to increase the ppi would be to reduce the size of the print. Thanks, Godfrey. Guess I’ll adjust the size of the test print downward. I have never printed a single photo. I'd like to give it a try. With this image, just as a test: <https://www.flickr.com/photos/eeweir/48678438307/in/dateposted-public/lightbox/> It’s 2.5 MB, 4032 x 2268 pixels I’ve checked out printing services via this review: <https://www.pcmag.com/roundup/353850/the-best-photo-printing-services> AdoramaPix and Nations Photo Lab appealed. But I see printing is now available via Flickr. Thought I’d give it a try. Wondering about a 10 x 20 or 12 x 24 paper print, lustre finish. With an image this size, what do you think? GESO: Favorites from Lake Superior's Painted Rocks
Four favorites from an album from a cruise along Lake Superior’s Painted Rocks lakeshore. All were taken with an iPhone. https://www.flickr.com/photos/eeweir/31038291608/in/album-72157701480452674/lightbox/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/eeweir/29974806787/in/album-72157701480452674/lightbox/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/eeweir/43998983825/in/album-72157701480452674/lightbox/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/eeweir/29974820907/in/album-72157701480452674/lightbox/ In not being faithful to it, I’m mindful of Cotty once suggesting that I identify the one image from a large set that told the entire story.
