Have you thought of a battery back up for your computer - recommended by a
computer geek after I lost my computer during a similar event - haven't had
another failure like that since and we've had a number of outages since.

Doug,

It's certainly not normal! We've been in this house 37 years and have never
had an event like this before.

We're looking into getting a whole-house surge protector to provide a
second layer of defense..

Thanks. A fun shoot. Yep. Original color. But its one of one. A customer

Its the only Cobra with that color as original equipment..

Hi Gang,

It's been years. But just today I saw a name on a Hagerty Auto
article, "Paul Stenquist," and I stopped in my tracks and thought, "I
know that name!".

https://tinyurl.com/4dexsnzu

Good work, Paul. I enjoyed that thoroughly.

Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying themselves on the list. I myself
haven't been shooting much at all. I no longer do any commercial
photography but I'm still a "serial appreciator" of photography in
general even if other things have muscled it to the sidelines these
days.

Some may remember me selling a venerable Pentax-A* 85mm f1.4 for a
1967 Austin-Healey Sprite a long time ago. Well, it's almost
finished...it's only been 12 years...

After that? Maybe I should turn left or something ... I'm sure I can find

Also, already double checking cameras, tripods, astro-tracker ... charging up
batteries in advance, cleaning lenses ... made damn sure I have my filters.

Double checked what time the clinics at the VA open so I can stop by there on

While I was in the hospital, my classic Italian sports carthe 1967
Lancia Fulvia Coupwas in the body shop having some rust repair
of the rocker panels done. I'm out of the hospital now, and Signora Fulvia is
also back at home.

In the course of doing the rust repair, I changed its looks a little bit by
painting the rocker panels a textured flat black, instead of the matched tan
body color, and removed the original chrome trim strips that ran under the
doors on both sides.

The result came out just as I'd hoped: A slightly trimmer, sportier look and
more in keeping with the early '70s Cromodora wheels that I've now got fitted
than the late '60s Campagnolo rally wheels that I'd had on the car before.

https://flic.kr/p/2oLFwr7 :: Fulvia, Refinish Rocker Panels

While that was being done, I had also located the original badging for the rear
("LANCIA Fulvia" in fine chrome on the transom) and a pair of the 'bumper
support' caps that cover the spots in the bodywork where the rear bumper
supports used to come through

https://flic.kr/p/2oLD4Mh :: Fulvia, New Tail Badge

because everyone, or at least *almost* everyone, with a Lancia Fulvia
Coup removes the bumpers to make the car look more like the Lancia
Fulvia rally cars that won so many races in the late 1960s-early 1970s. :)

Photos made with iPhone 11 Pro using the Moment camera app, raw output, and
rendered in Lightroom Classic.

Oh yes: My partner, Felipe, picked the car up for me a few days before I
returned home. He made a few snaps of it with his phone to show me what had
been done. I put them together into a short video presentation, just for the
fun of it:

https://flic.kr/p/2oKzr9J

Enjoy!

I have several photos on the wall that have darkened over the years, and lost
their charm. As I recall I used Slideprinter/Denver Digital imaging for them.

I have more photos Id like to get printed, and a few old ones
re-printed. What printing services have people been happy with?

I had just the opposite experience with my 1959 Austin Haley, better known as a

LOL!

I remember my old MG. Always in the shop, and always a long wait for
parts. Once, the throttle linkage broke, and I drove around for months
with baling wire as a "replacement part" until one arrived from British
Lowland. It was a lot of fun to drive -- when I could.

Yeah, the e type was a tamed down xkss from 1957, the Honda Odyssey dates from
1994, but yeah, whether we’re talking 40, 50 or 60 years of development, those
were a critical few decades, if only for the roles that computers were able to
play starting in the 80’s not only in design but in engine and brake management.

It would almost seem as if we are 98% in agreement and vigorously debating a
superfluous 2% of the question. Fortunately, that doesn’t happen very often.

Probably closer to 50, but yes. The Mazda Mx5/Miata/Eunos is considered a
rather slow car in performance circles, but if you look at the specifications,
it’s not that far off from a V-8 powered Sunbeam Tiger. A lot of the legendary
performance cars would be “fair to middlin” by today’s standards.

In photography where performance doesn’t matter except for when it does, the
things today’s cameras can do are mind boggling compared to the film era. I’ve
taken shots at upwards of ISO 10,000 that have less noise than Tri-X had grain.
Very few of my astro-landscape photos would have even been possible not that
long ago. I didn’t really have the budget for lenses until fairly recently, but
I suspect that what we consider “OK performance” in a modern lens would have
blown people out of the water not that many decades ago.

Yeah, they handle almost as well as a minivan. Some years back the folks at
Grassroots motorsports noticed that their Honda Odyssey handled pretty well, so
they took the Honda and an E-type to their “autocross course”, basically a go
kart track, to get some side by side times. They also took a set of better
tires for the minivan to see how close they could get to the E-type with a bit
of help. It turns out that on stock tires, the Odyssey beat the jag, and with
the good tires absolutely smoked it.

OK, so after writing the above I decided to exercise my google-fu:

https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/articles/soccer-moms-revenge/

I forgot about the 356. My apologies to the Maestro, Harry Pellow, but I’m not
particularly interested in 3565s.

Though they do end the article with this:
And sports cars, we find, are about more than generating numbers—hell, any
minivan can do that. They are about the fact that when certain parts are put
together in certain ways by certain people, they become something greater than
their own sum.

Sports cars—whether they be our 356 or XKE, or a TR3 or an MR2 or an MX-5—are
about making the driver feel like he or she is the coolest person on the
planet, even if only for a little while. Sports cars aren’t about getting
somewhere to have an experience, they are an experience, every time the key is
turned.

Go on a trip in the Odyssey, and you’ll remember the destination; go on a trip
in a sports car, and you’ll remember the drive.

So, I’ll yank things back on to topic and mention that this seems to be the
Pentax strategy, focusing on how it feels to use the camera rather than
entirely on the technical specifications.

Had my only experience in an E type coupe in the early 60's coming back from a
race at Mosport, outside of Toronto, heading back to Detroit, late on a Sunday

The annual car show in September last year was cancelled due to covid but a
smaller covid friendly version is on today. I went a few hours ago for a
look and some photos. Sun was in and out making it a bit tricky. Different
location and a smaller than normal show but it looked well attended. Car
owners are charged $10 at the cgate and it goes towards our food bank.

One used to be able to go to a location under the departure or landing
pattern of a major civilian airport or even a military airbase, watch the
planes, and even take images. Now, that will get one on the no fly list,

Subject: Nice ending to my K-3 saga

So, I bought a K-3iii. Tried it. I was impressed, but in too many ways it was
too different from my other Pentax bodies (K-1 and 645Z). I could not readily
switch from one to the other because the layout and functionality and content
of the buttons and menus was just too much for me to adapt to. Compounded by
the addition of a touch-screen to manage many functions. I have sold the K-3iii.

I realized that the features of the K-3iii APS-C that I found useful are also
present in the K-3ii which is functionally a contemporary to the K-1 and 645Z.
So I bought a used K-3ii from KEH.

I have bought many camera bodies and lenses from KEH over the years. My worst
ever experience was buying an LX body from them. It came carefully nestled in
amongst plastic/styrofoam peanuts as packing material. As they
has not bothered to put a body cap on the camera, and as they had not bothered
to put the camera in a plastic bag, those peanuts were also inside the camera
body. That package was quickly retuned to them, they sent a replacement LX. But
still, how careless can you get!

Fast forward to today. I received the K-3. A generous wrapping of bubble wrap
around the interior package. And what a package! The camera body (in its own
plastic bag) along with the charger, charger electrical cord and battery each
in their own plastic bags and then bundled together, all of this inside a
padded zippered case. I am totally amazed!

(And the camera seems to live up to their EX rating.)

And the hill he dies on nonsense - that's ridiculous.

I don't expect you to know anything about shootings in my vicinity. My point
was that its a mistake to think you can intimidate someone and expect them to
back down, because there are a lot of people who are in a place where crashing
into your nice truck makes more sense than getting out of your way. And folks
who feel that way aren't just here in the US, they are everywhere. It's not
about my country or your country, its about human reality.

I'm done here.

Ive made progress on my incognito lens case. Im not completely
thrilled with the layout but it seems to be pretty close to workable. Id
like to improve the mounting of the tray for the small primes so there is more
functional storage underneath it.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/4xx9sQvo2FUeL6kNA

I should figure out how to make dividers, and maybe put some soft foam on the
underside of the lid to help keep things in place.

What Id really like to do is 3-d print back caps that had tabs on the
outside, and basically make bayonet mounts for them, so that I could latch them
into the hard case, but when I wanted to put them in a smaller camera bag,
Id take out the lens, back cap and all, and just go with that.

Well, Perhaps not THAT different.

Here are a few initial snaps of my new Black Swallowtail caterpillars.
They are more difficult to find and photograph because they feed on
parsley, which has a lot more places to hide than milkweed. (They also
feed and lay eggs on Rue, but I want to leave the Rue that I planted in our

While on our brief northern Michigan honeymoon two+ years ago, Char and I
bought some Hollyhock seeds at a winery. I tossed them in the perennial garden
when we returned. Last year, one plant appeared and bloomed. This year, we have
three. WhenIm in the backyard with big glass and theres a lull in
bird activity, I entertain my self by shooting other things in range.
Thats why I shot this bloom with an outrageously long 945mm FOV.

I have driven through the UP East-to-West and West-to-East several times, but

are from that area… https://photos.stanhalpin.com/p355522230 ] Other images
from that general area: https://photos.stanhalpin.com/p735513422 On the west
end of Munising, on MI-28, is (or was anyway…) a small walk-in/carry-out
restaurant, IMHO one of the best sources of Cornish Pasties. But you will have
many opportunities for this “local” dish throughout the UP. [In the late 1800s,
early 1900s there were many immigrants from Cornwall to the UP, attracted by
the copper mining and related jobs. Meg’s grandparents were part of that…] Just
a bit west of Munising, Marquette is a nice college town with good lakefront,
good brew pubs. There are numerous waterfalls and small lakes in the Hiawatha
National Forest, SE of Munising. If you drive east from Munising, staying as
close to Superior as you can, as far as Deer Park on CR-H58 there are multiple
spots with good access to the lakeshore etc. Driving back west on US 2,
Manistique has nice lakefront parks on the Lake Michigan shoreline. Tahquamenon
Falls State Park and Seney National Wildlife Refuge are both worth the trip!
If/when you get as far east as Tahquamenon Falls, it wouldn’t be that much
further off to the NE to Sault St. Marie and the Soo Locks. I recommend
Lakeshore Drive which branches off of MI-123 a bit south of Paradise, takes you
to a junction with I-75 a bit south of Sault St. Marie. Or SE to St. Ignace, a
short ferry ride to Mackinac Island. If you get that far east, the Straits
State Park just SW of Ignace provides great viewpoints of the Mackinaw Straits
bridge. At the western end of I have been told that the Porcupine Mountains
Wilderness State Park is also good but haven’t made it there yet. A link that
may be useful…

Re: incognito case

2021-04-22 Thread Ken Waller
When I was traveling for business, I had a Halliburton case that had thick foam
inserts that I cut out to receive and isolate lenses and bodies. Worked well
for me for over 18 years - a lot of rough handling and no issues with damage. I
believe Halliburton use to offer replacement inserts for sale - you might try
an auto upholsterer.

Re: Happy Valentines Day!

FWIW, I wouldn’t send anything but the body, well wrapped, first in a ziplock
bag surrounded by your packaging material. They’ll have batteries and memory
cards on hand.
You need to visit their web site, they’ll give you a preliminary estimate. Then
down load their shipping label and get their assigned work order number.

Don’t know how long it will take now but in the past they were quick on my

Re: OT: Photo Forensics

2021-02-15 Thread Ken Waller
Actually no. We usually made large blowups on poster board of the most
important images.
I never made any marking on my photos and spoke from memory about the relevance
of each particular image.

At one trial, I had a juror approach me about obtaining one of my images - it
was an extreme close up of a rust pattern - quite abstract.

It was not unusual to shoot 3 to 5 rolls of 36 exposure film - always a Kodak
color print stock.

2021-02-15 Thread Ken Waller
Interesting subject Dan.

In my last 18 paid working years I was an expert witness for Ford. During that
time we converted from film to digital photography.
With film we had to keep the negatives for proof that the images we testified
to were real. With digital we kept the original memory cards. I was aware then
of efforts to fool proof digital images but that was still in its infancy.
The truthfulness of my images, both film and digital boiled down to my swearing
that the images I presented were a true and honest representation of the
subject as I saw it when photographed. Never had any of my images, presented at
trial, questioned.

Re: GESO: Kruger Park scenes 9th Feb.

2021-02-11 Thread Ken Waller
I doubt filters would produce the effect of better light.
Better light occurs around sunrise and sun set. Showing up around those times
would certainly improve the possibility of shooting under better light.
I’ve gotten up way before sunrise to travel to spots waiting for sunrise in the
hope that conditions would allow shooting in the better light. YMMV

Re: February PUG is up

Ann, a few weeks ago there was a news item about the Alaskan National guard
relocating the bus that was the central location in the movie “Into the Wild”.
Over the years it had become a destination point for travelers and had cost
several hi cost rescues and several deaths. No mention in the article about
where it was relocated to.

FS - DA*16-50 F2.8 ED, AL, IF - with extras - Good news/Bad news

2021-01-07 Thread Ken Waller
I’m the original owner, purchased 12 years ago, my least used lens.
Cosmetically and optically perfect. Includes caps, hood, case, box and three
77mm slim filters - (Hoya UV, Hoya 4X neutral density and B+W circular
polarizer all - in excellent condition).

Bad news, it doesn’t auto focus. Can be manually focused with all other photo
functions working.
I’m not going to invest the money to repair it as I very seldom use it. Repairs
would run around $250.

$200 USD for the lot - I’ll pay domestic postage.

Email me off list if interested

Re: Ball head question

2020-12-28 Thread Ken Waller
Larry, I have longer Arca Swiss plate on my 600 FA, when used on my Kirk King
Cobra gimbal head the lens effectively becomes weightless. If the plate is used
effectively the angle of the lens should have no effect on the balance.
The length of the plate needed depends on the lens it is used on.
