Re: A half-frame Pentax film camera

2024-03-04 Thread Marco Alpert
I guess my question on this is how long these theoretical young folks will
continue to find waiting anywhere from a few days to a week to even see what
they’ve shot “fun.” Given the apparent popularity of the Fuji Instax cameras,
absolute image quality is not necessarily a big requirement for that kind of
fun, but instant gratification seems to be. How long until that enforced wait
eclipses the novelty and the camera ends up in a drawer? Sure, there are going
to be some who will stick with it for “artistic” or retrophilia reasons (and
fewer still who will process and print themselves), but is that market really
big enough to make all this development effort worthwhile?

I’m actually pretty interested to see how this will play out.

Way OT Astro stuff

2024-01-08 Thread Marco Alpert
Although this has absolutely nothing to do with Pentax, since Larry brought up
astro-imaging, I can’t resist showing the initial results of something that has
really reenergized my passion for astronomy. Although I’ve owned a couple of
really nice telescopes since the early 90s (which were great for visual
observation when I lived on top of a not-too-light-polluted hill and could just
roll the scopes out to the driveway to observe), since we moved to the
Sacramento area, the combination of light pollution (around Bortle 7 for anyone
who knows what that means), and the increasing difficulty of lugging them out
to set up had pretty much ended observation for me (and I was never
particularly interested in the intricacies of astrophotography).

Then, a few months ago, I acquired a small, inexpensive, “robotic” scope for
what is called EAA (electronically assisted astronomy) that promises the
ability to visually observe in light-polluted areas (albeit on the screen of a
phone or tablet) as well as offer much simplified photography. Here are a few
of my first results:

M33 Galaxy in Triangulum: https://flic.kr/p/2pgYEEb

NGC 7635 Bubble Nebula in Cassiopeia: https://flic.kr/p/2prm5Qg

NGC 1499 California Nebula in Perseus: https://flic.kr/p/2prkrFu

This little gizmo has only a 50mm (~2 in) objective (which is tiny for deep sky
objects) and has the ability, controlled by a phone or tablet, to automatically
find and slew to whatever object you tell it to and begin taking a series of 10
second exposures. Let it keep doing this as long as you want and watch the
object appear on the phone or tablet with more and more detail as the
successive exposures are stacked and processed. I did do some post-processing
on these, but as I have exactly zero experience with astrophotography, it’s
pretty primitive compared to what’s possible.

So, a telescope with a built-in computer-controlled alt/az mount, a digital
astro-camera, auto-focuser, dew heater, multiple filters, small carbon-fiber
tripod and a fairly nice case, for about $500.

We truly live in the future.

Re: Angry glitz chicken

2023-07-04 Thread Marco Alpert
OT, because these are just crappy phone pics, but we also have glitz chickens
dropping by our house fairly often (and we live in a typical suburban
neighborhood - no idea where they normally hang out). They’ll come right up to
the front door.

Also, we had a little momma bird build a nest in one of the folds of the
curtains in our shade structure and was able to snap a couple of pics of the
eggs and the resulting babies.

Good eye. Yeah, on a few of them I was trying out the "add grain" function.

Phone photos

2023-03-23 Thread Marco Alpert
For various reasons, I haven’t been doing any “serious" photography for quite a
while now (although I do consistently lurk here). I think I’ve only taken my
K-3 out a few times in the past few years, and then only for some practical
purposes. However, seeing the conversation about the current state of phone
photography, I thought I’d share a few phone photos I took this past weekend
while we were visiting family up in Olympia WA.

I usually only use the phone for grab shots to record things, but I thought I’d
try some high contrast B These were all edited on the phone using Snapseed.
I could definitely have refined them on the computer once I got home, but
thought I’d leave them as they were as documentation of the in-phone process.

Re: Photographing Dolls

2018-10-07 Thread Marco Alpert
Thanks Ann, Bill, Larry, and P.J. for the kind comments.

To (briefly) answer Ann’s question, I’m pretty much fine. Spent the last year
and a half doing major renovation on the house I’ve been in for the last 25
years in preparation for selling it and moving a hundred or so miles away
(where my wife has lots of family and the housing costs are about half of what
they now are in the Santa Cruz area). And then doing another major renovation
on the house we bought. Finally coming out the other end and hopefully back to
photography again.

Re: PESO - The Ship of State

2017-02-19 Thread Marco Alpert
Thanks to all for the comments.

For those asking, it’s the SS Palo Alto, a concrete ship built in San Francisco
during WWI and installed as a tourist attraction at Seacliff Beach, south of
Santa Cruz, in 1930. Over the last couple of years, storms have taken a
dramatic toll on it, most recently a month ago when massive waves tore the
stern off of the ship. More at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Palo_Alto

As for adding a bit at the bottom, I had looked at an alternate crop, but
what’s down there resulted (in my view anyway) in throwing the tonal balance
off.

You know, you’re certainly welcome to your opinion, but telling someone else
what they do or don’t “know” strikes me as a bit presumptuous.

No argument there.

> Every photograph anyone ever took makes many value judgements.

You’ve said above that the *photographer* makes choices (which I guess you
equate with “value judgements”). But unless the photographer makes a habit of
communicating the reasons he or she made those choices (a habit that I eschew),
Larry’s point that the photograph acts as Rorschach into which the viewer can
inject their own preconceptions, even as they guess at the photographer’s
motivation, seems pretty valid to me.
