The 645D was next and it's making all kinds of waves of it's own.
And I'm still figuring out how to take full advantage of the K5.
I suppose the next step is a full frame sensor for the K5.
I would like a fast DFA 400 mm or even DFA 300 mm.

Isn't it about time for the rumors about the K5 replacement to start
appearing? The K10 had a production run of 2 years but the K20 and K7
only ran for 1 year before being replaced. On that record the K3 (?)
should be appearing soon - or at least start being talked about.

I keep looking at the K5's low light performance (the only thing I'm
not happy with in the K7). And then I think the next model should be
even better, but I hate waiting.

So where are the rumors about the next camera. What are the must have
features that will sell it? Or are we reaching the point where
advancement is slowing simply because technology can't keep up?

Ted,

Wish this picture would be exposure bracketed ;)

That was my idea as well, being in-camera HDR, and I still believe it would

Peter

as I stated earlier, I submitted this to the contest for fun The shot
was
done "in camera" in my K 7 on HDR2 setting so there is not a set of
exposures. I
did work with it a little in Lightroom but did not increase the
saturation. I
boosted the black level and also vibrance a little. I also boosted
recovery and
clarity sliders. Little bit of graduated on the foreground and sky and
that was
mostly it. I did have misgivings about the ghosting on the ridge so I did
try to

lighten the sky to reduce that some. Thanks for your comments.

Re: Where are the rumors?

2011-06-08 Thread Peter Zalabai
Well not much rumours for Pentax. There is nothing about the K-line, all the
rumours going around are focusing on the mirrorless systems of Pentax. One
being APS-C (I do believe the NC-1 pictures floating around is the APS-C or
4/3 one) and one being a small sensor one (some says it's called Pentax Q)
and one of them is rumoured to be based on the Auto 110 system (I bet that's
the small sensor one)

The companies in focus for rumours are:
Sony - Nex C3, A35, 30mm macro lens and a new flash for the Nex are
announced today, but there is more to come. A77, Nex 7 and one more camera
will be announced soon, most likely the 7th of July (7/7 for the A77...
cheeky :D)
Panasonic - G3 is out and there is a rumoured GF3 with ultra small body, few
pictures already floating the net so it's just matter of days to get
announced

Olympus - EPL3 and one real small camera to be announced soon
Samsung - They are the main thread in the rumor mill. NX20, NX200 and 85
f1.4 will be announced soon. One the cameras might be a Leica M9 / Fuji X100
like and there is a rumoured square sensor mirrorless Medium Format like
camera-box :)
Nikon - not much, mirrorless will have smaller than 4/3 sensor (2.5-2.8x
crop factor)

Canon - Who cares? :)
Holga - Open Source mirrorless camera project. Sounds interesting and a good
idea.

Hi Ted*,

First of all, I wish all the best to your Grandson and hopefully all this
mystery sickness will be nothing more than a fading memory soon.

The shot is good, it's well composed I like it. The moment, the framing and
the feeling of the picture is just excellent.

But the post process is just not good for me. I feel the picture way too
oversaturated and you have a lot of 'HDR-Glow'. There are many HDR softwares
around, which can create nice Tone Mapped pictures from Expo-Bracketed
shots, but I haven't found any that would do the job properly. My method for
HDR photos is a mix of using Photomatix / Lightroom / Photoshop and the
workflow based on the workflow of Joel Grimes (who is famous for his HDR
backgrounded portraits) with adding my own twists.

But if you would share the original brackets (or was it in-camera HDR?) I
would love to give it a try to post-process it.

Hello All,

Today I have found a Carl Zeiss Jena Kipronar 1:1,9 f=135mm "lens".
I guess this is a lens for projection devices and was built in,
perhaps, nineteen forties.
It does not seem to be coated.
No diaphragm is present. Likewise, no focusing ring...
It seems to have two elements (or, groups) at each end.
Glass seems fine.
It is 140mm long and the diameter is about 76 mm.
The middle part consists of a 88 mm- long bright (chrome?) metal.

I wonder if I can use this as anything other than a USD 20 paper weight.

Can I, perhaps, built a camera which exposes a sensitized surface via this
lens?

Sort of a view camera?
How can I find its "flange distance", if there is one?

Any ideas?

Re: Workflow Quandary

2011-05-31 Thread Peter Zalabai

Hi Brian

I just read this mail now and I haven't read the replies yet :)

So basicaly I have two softwares for my workflow...
First one is the organizer and batch processer. This is Adobe Lightroom.
With LR you can create user presets for your taste, I have one for basic
processing (little play with exposure settings), one for Black&White
processing, one for Infrared Processing, one for Welding Glass processing,
one for Urban Acidish processing and one for preparing for my more detailed
Photoshop workflow. If you want I can share these presets with you.
But the main advantage of LR is the Import Photos. I organize all my photos
by date. Each day a separate folder. You can set this up under the Import
Photo settings panel. It just makes everything sooo simple for me :)
But to be honest there is much more in Lightroom than you can see for the
first look. I highly recommend http://lightroomkillertips.com/ and
http://www.presetsheaven.com/

As of the more detailed workflow I use Photoshop. There is something that
Lightroom just not capable and it is Layers and Blending modes.
First of all I shoot in RAW. It gives soo much more room to play with
(especially the 14 bits RAW files)

My workflow is based on 3 layers all of them looking rubbish on it's own.
All of them starts from the prepared RAW (basic exposure settings, 0
Highlights, Fill Lights and Blacks, and -50 on Contrast... looks really flat
and really rubbish :D) in LR. I open the picture from Lightroom as a Smart
Object. This is the key for detailed RAW workflow. You can open a picture as
SO from LR by right clicking on the picture, Edit and there Open as Smart
Object in Photoshop.
The 3 layers are quite similar and they are copies of each other (not just
simple layer copies... it's right click on the layer and New Smart Object
via Copy). All of them in Overlay Blending Mode. They are (from bottom to
top):
1. The Bottom: A flat base layer to give the the very basic setup for my
picture. I usually set the Vibrance to +100 and I move the Clarity based on
what I want: more softness or more 'sharpness'.
2. The Middle: A grayscale image that gives all the contrast to my image. I
usuall not touching the Contrast setting I better play with Blacks, Fill
Lights and a bit of Highlight Recovery. Sometimes I also put the Clarity
high. Also to depending on the picture I change the White Balance to make
the picture more 'flat' or more 'contrasty'
3. The Top: The Color Control Cream as I call :) This one often gets a
Gaussian Blur (smart) filter as well. On this one I put the Vibrance down
and the Saturation high. Also Clarity goes -100. This layer controls the
Color Contrast in my pictures. Also it gives me a little play with the White
Balance as it can have a warmer tone without affecting the whole picture
drastically.

Also to increase contrast and sharpness I add 2 High Pass Layers based on
the Grayscale layer. One of them is for finer details (High Pass +5) and the
other one is for contrast (High Pass +25). They are in between the GrayScale
Contrast Controller and the Color Control Cream one... of course Overlay.
Just add them a Layer Mask and you can selective sharpen or contrast parts
of the image.

Now the big advantage of this workflow that I can finetune each details
separately. As I have 3 layers I can edit invidually and the mix of the 3
gives the final results and as they are Smart Objects you can go and edit
them any time. Obviously create an action to prepare all your workflow (If
requested I can share my actions :D) as it can save you loads of time.

But again... what I can say look for tutorials on the internet (I liked Joel
Grimes and Joey L) as many times you can see it's much easier than it looks
like :)

And most importantly... explore and research... your Photoshop is your
laboratory. Find a post process technique that works for you.

Hope it helps,

G'day all

First - a confession.

I know it's a bit Kenny boy-ish - but I shoot mainly JPGs.

There.

I've said it.

I feel unburdened somehow.

I know I 'should' be shooting RAW and I do shoot RAW from time to time.
And it's not that I don't understand its advantages, it's just that I
struggle with the workflow. So I'm hoping for a bit of enlightenment.

It seems to me that if you only shoot RAW, you have to have some system
in place to batch process those images. There just aren't enough hours
in the day to process each image individually. I have CS3 and I know
that I can batch process a folder full of RAW images with Photoshop's
File > Automate > Batch command (presumably Lightroom can do something
similar), but here is where things get murky.

So - I'm interested in how others go about the process while still
retaining a measure of sanity. A few questions, then...

Do you point your conversion

Hi,

If you are happy with the lens and will use it as it is now... then don't
touch it :)

But I do believe you can't really use the lens this way and probably a
repair wouldn't really worth it's price if it's made by a professional. So
you can give it a try, open it up and see if you can fix it. Most of the old
manual lenses are not too complicated. And after all it will be a good
experience! :)

Re: OT Picture fix help

2011-05-25 Thread Peter Zalabai

Well... not much you can do for mainly 2 reasons:
1. Sharpness
The picture seems very soft... It's probably because of the age.
2. The 'texture'
That's a really challenging task to remove, I would say you might need to
edit the picture almost pixel level and might need to re-paint some parts

OT/PESO: Happy Towel Day

2011-05-25 Thread Peter Zalabai

Hi,

It's the 10th Towel Day today! If you don't know what it is:
Towel Day is celebrated every 25 May as a tribute by fans of the late author
Douglas Adams. On this day, fans carry a towel with them to demonstrate
their love for the books and the author, as referenced in Adams's The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The commemoration was first held in 2001,
two weeks after Adams's death on 11 May 2001.

Here's my celebration PESO:

Cheers,

Ps.: It's quite challenging to four-in-hand-knot tie a towel :)

PESO: Daddy Longleg

2011-04-20 Thread Peter Zalabai
Hi list,

It's been a while I've been posting anything here :) Mostly because I
had no time to do photos and *coughs* I had no Pentax, but Nikon for a
while (had to sell my K20D and I bought a Nikon D5000 as I had a good
bargain and also I had a spare D70s from my dad so had a couple Nikon
lenses...). As Pentax is making awesome cameras these days I got a
Pentax K-r (white one) recently (X-mass gift :D).

So dusted off my good ol' K-bayonett lenses and of course my favourite
macro photo combo: Tamron Adaptall-2 f2.5 24mm and a cheap chinese
reverse ring. Luckily I had a daddy longleg (a male mosquito) landing on
my curtain (around 3 AM...) so I had a chance to test my macro skills.

Well long story short, here's the result:

Kipon adapters for Sony NEX-3/5 have a Nikon tilt adapter. They go

Re: Tilt-shift lenses or adaptors

2011-04-12 Thread Peter Zalabai
Lensbabies are selective focus and not tilt/shift.

My solution for tilt/shift photography are:
solution 1 - freelensing:
if you don't mind being a bit on the wild side. My best freelensing lens
is a Tamron Adaptall-2 f2.5 24mm without any adaptor, so I can put the
lens a bit closer to the 'film' pane allowing me to focus to infinity. I
recommend the use of a tripod with this setting as the last thing you
want is to hold the lens in one hand, the camera in the other and
somehow try to fire the shutter. LOL
A sample for my free-lensing:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/timbah/4421716087/ (it was made with Nikon
D70s... please excuse my blasphemy! :D)

solution 2 - Hartblei Tilt (or shift) adapter for Pentacon 6 lenses
this setup is the easiest to use. You take an old PSix lens, like the
Carl Zeiss Flektogon f4 50mm and attach to your camera with a Tilt
adaptor. Since the PSix lenses are designed to make pictures on a 6x6 cm
'sensor' if you use them on an APSC (or even a 35mm film) then only the
middle of the 'image-circle' will be used, which is the best quality for
all lenses. Also the advantage is you don't really need to shift these
lenses to compensate the 'slide' of the 'image-circle' as you have a
loads of areas to work with.
The limitation of this system is the wide angle. As 50mm on 6x6 is
already wide angle (35mm is fisheye :D) you can't really find lenses
wider than 50mm (you can find some 35-40mm ones... for a bit too high
price). But in the other hand you can get some seriously good lenses :D
for a bargain with good picture quality, my favourite is being the Carl
Zeiss Sonnar 180mm f2.8 which is IMHO the best portrait lens ever made
if you like to draganize your pictures as it's disturbingly sharp at
f2.8 :D (I just love this lens... sorry!) And also a one hour photoshoot
with this lens and you don't need to go to gym for a while :D
A sample with the 80mm f2.8 Biometar:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/timbah/2953220154/

So my advise:
Go for the Hartblei adaptor with a cheap Carl Zeiss Biometar 80mm f2.8
(it's smaller and cheaper, easier to use in the beginning) or a Carl
Zeiss Flektogon 50mm f4. You will get an easy to use tilt lens without
the need of shifting the lens. Also the Biometar is good to use for
portraits.
Also get a Tamron Adaptall-2 f2.5 24mm (I have the 01BB version) and try
freelensing. If you are interested in macro then get a 55mm reverse
adapter as well as this lens is one of my main extreme-macro lens as
well.
A recent sample for it's macro capabilities. The image is not a crop,
actually I had to extend it a bit (about 10-15% on the left and bottom)
for better composition. Keep in mind that the spider is about 2-3mm in
total.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/timbah/5609939029/

Some Ebay links for you:
The PSix - PK tilt adaptor:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hartblei-Tilt-Adapter-Pentacon-Six-Lens-Pentax-/170548600701?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b57d1f7d#ht_722wt_1141

The Flektogon 50mm f4:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Zeiss-FLEKTOGON-50mm-F4-Pentacon-Six-Canon-EOS-Nikon-/150589386498?pt=UK_Photography_VintagePhotography_VintagePhotoAccessories&hash=item230fd3af02#ht_6048wt_1141

The Biometar 80mm f2.8:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CARL-ZEISS-Jena-BIOMETAR-MC-80mm-f-2-8-80-/370490133352?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item5642eecb68
as this one was the 'kit-lens' for the PSix camera I recommend looking
for one with the camera as well... usually you can get it for cheap and
hey, you get a MF camera as well!

The Tamron 24mm f2.5:
This one has 3 versions... I have the latest 01BB one.
This is the previous version 01B:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tamron-24mm-f2-5-lens-exc-adaptall-mount-choice-/390262438991?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5add743c4f#ht_2575wt_1141
And this is the oldest version (notice the old tamron logo... my
logo/signo is based on this :D)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TAMRON-24mm-f2-5-Lens-NIKON-FE-FM-FE2-D90-D80-ETC-/170531874417?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27b47de671#ht_1706wt_907

Hope it helps and let us see your tilt photos soon! :D

.timber

Even the expensive B+W 10 stop filter is having this problem based on
the experience of a friend.
The Cokin ND8 is not really considered as cheap crap :) and they made a
'revise' on their filters called 'Digital Solutions'.
I believe these filters were made first for film cameras where this is
not a problem.

I will stick to more expensive filters once I am ready to afford them :)
and I am happy with the result as it opens up new possibilities in IR
photography.

That's probably because the ones you used are cheap crap. You'd get better
results, and more accurate density measures, using brands like Lee, B+W and
Heliopan, or the pro versions of Cokin and Hoya.

2010-02-12 Thread Peter Zalabai

Hi,

I've a faulty K10D (the aperture-arm doesn't works correctly) and a
faulty BG-2. Could anyone give me any advice about the camera services
in London. Which one is good and cheap? :P And most importantly... does
it worths to repair or it will cost more than a new K-7? :)

2009-08-02 Thread Peter Zalabai
Thank you Tim! I tought I am the only crazy man on earth who comes up
with such an idea! :) I was also looking for small tv screens to do
this... :) But now I feel better that I am not the only crazy one :)

You might give a try to the Zigview system as Zigview S2 might be a
solution for you. But of course that one has it's limitations as well.

I think i could live with the bad quality for a while.
The idea is to hook it up with one of these
http://www.vosonic.com/product.php?PA=feature&kind=1&id_1=9
and use a cable release and a wide angle on tripod for some nest
photography next year. All I need is to see whats in frame.

On the other hand: I might use the bad screen quality to talk myself
into buying a K-7 :-)
Time will tell.

OT: Under a Nuclear Cloud - Reportage by Gettyimages

2009-07-30 Thread Peter Zalabai
I must start with a warning. On the link below there are series of
shocking pictures from a Nuclear Testing site, where villagers were used
as human guinea pigs by the soviet regime to prepare for a war that
never happened. Very nice and touching pictures and I believe they will
shock anyone with a little social-sensitivity in their heart.

Wasn't Cotty raving about the Fuji a while back? It certainly looks on paper

lens for round about that price, if you keep an eye on the shops.

If not Pentax then only Nikon can come as a considerable choice for me.
My reasons are a bit 'racist' :)

Canon - Hell no. I hate Canon. :D
Sony - The only Sony product I will ever buy is Playstation. :)
Olympus / Panasonic - 4/3... enough said :)
Sigma - Well... nice try but they are using their own mount and since
Sigma is the only company making lenses for that... it's just... OUT. :D

So only Nikon stands and Fujifilm. I was reading a lot about their
sensor technology and as I am a tech-geek (or nerd :D) it's always
attracted me. And also keep in mind that for Nikon I already have 2
lenses and a flash...

:( K20D gone.

2009-07-13 Thread Peter Zalabai

Hi list,

I am a bit sad because I had to sell my K20D recently (was quite in a
financial trouble). So now here I stand broken hearted and without a
camera. I am thinking about to buy an older camera and so far Nikon D80
came to my mind but recently I saw Fuji S3 Pro is going around 200
Pounds. Do any of you have any first hand experience of this camera? I
would like to have a Nikon based system as my father is giving me his
unused (or less used) lens and an old Metz Flash so I only need a body :)

Regards,
.timber

Ps.: My Pentax DA 12-24 f4 is still available if anyone is thinking to
buy one :)

Ps2.: No matter what system I use in my heart I will stay a Pentaxian :D

Re: Oh another K-7 thread...

2009-05-21 Thread Peter Zalabai
Not conclusions, just feelings. I found very disappointing the sample
shots on Pentax' site. I remember the old D300 sample shots that were
shocking me and now seeing these shots to me it seems that the K-7 is
worse than the K20D. I am not saying K-7 is bad or good but most of the
"all other features" you mention are a, Box-Features; b, fixing
weaknesses (marked them in your list). The VF and 100K Shutter are nice :)

I just expressed my feeling about the K-7 which was a dissapointment for
me. I still have traces of the "I WANT ONE" fever but... oh, you know :)

And still... the sample shots on the site sucks. And _that's_ really
disappointing.

Again... I am not here to argue, to convince or judge anything or
anyone... I just had a feeling about the K-7, based on all the info I
got, which I wanted to share... :) So don't take it as an offense please
;) (Why so serious? :D)

.timber

Oh another K-7 thread...

2009-05-21 Thread Peter Zalabai

Hi list,

Sorry for opening a new K-7 thread... I just tought to share my thoughts
with you...

So... K-7. When I first saw the pictures it was a beauty for me. The
first thing that crossed my mind is "I MUST HAVE ONE" (yeah with
all-caps :D). The K-7 is a very nice and very stylish camera and it
brings back the old style when engineers designed machines with ruler
and bows. Personally I dislike the now trendy 'everything is rounded'
style that rules the designs nowadays (cars, computers, phones etc).
But, oh-well, Nikon has quite similar design with D3 and D700, so it's
not that unique, yet Pentax made it much more stylish than Nikon (IMHO).

Then as the first set of so-called-specifications came the K-7 was still
a promising camera. 1/250 Synch and 1/8000 Shutter, Better AF, HD-Video,
AF Assist light, etc. All in all the K-7 was the nice big red balloon
that everyone wants :)

But as time passed by the specifications turned to be false or
not-that-nice. 1/250 went back to 1/180, Better AF -like the sensor- is
just an Improved (but same) SAFOX VII, HD-Video is "only" 720 lines and
motion JPEG...

And now the test shots on the official page... Terrible. First the
girl... totally lacks sharpness for me and well the dynamic range of the
photo seems to me not that awesome. Then same applies to almost all
shots. And in the end the last shot made with the 12-24. Terrible CA.
One of the new features is the CA correction and this how they market it?

So all in all I am very disappointed with the K-7 as the "new" flagship
model. It's nothing more just the K20D with a class-closing (or how
should I call the opposite of class leading? :D) HD video feature and
tweaked features. The nice big red balloon seems to be popped out...

But don't get me wrong... I still love the K20D and the Pentax Side of
Life :)

.timber

Re: K7 HD video

2009-05-20 Thread Peter Zalabai
Nice video (but I liked Laforet's videos better.. links below) but keep
in mind 2+1 things:
EOS 5D MKII is Full Frame. Better DOF, Better Dynamics, Better Noise
handling.

EOS 5D MKII is Full HD (1080) while K-7 is "only" 720 lines
Nikon D90 has HD-video as well... but it sucks with it's wobbling problem

So while HD Video is a nice feature it still can be screwed :)
