I've always used a free version. Does anyone know if it is still possible

When AVG came out they promised to always maintain a free personal version.
They have, but they are finding better ways to hide it on their web site.
Still worth finding and works great with auto updates.

Shel, a rep at the Pentax booth at Photokina told me (and was not

are the same as Minolta **-400. Don't remind the first letters but
according to the quick search I did on google they may be NP-400 which
you should be able to find easily (and cheaper) than from Pentax.

At least we are sure the another company already uses these batteries
so we ave a second source for those. Probably if these batteries are
indeed NP-400 then we should find those easily and cheap.

2006-09-25 Thread Powell Hargrave
In a related dumb down item, last night on a local station there was a 5
minute segment on a new HP digital P+S that had a slimming filter.
Fortunately a local Photoshop guru explained it fairly well - the camera was
compressing the image @ the center to make the subject, also in the center,
appear thinner. When the subject wasn't in the center of the image, it
thinned/shrunk what was.
I guess if it sells the camera so what - we don't have to buy it.

Second is worse at f2 and needs 4 to 5.6 to get good.
Third is horrible wide open and isn't sharp until f8 but is the sharpest

Possible sensor, not practical, at least not for a while.

Take a MUCH improved Fovion type sensor so each pixel sensor gets all
protons, not just R or G or B. Stick all the electronics on the back so
the sensor wells occupy close to 100% of the surface of the chip. Improve
the electronics to the point where you can count each photon with
practically no noise.

Highly improbable, but not impossible. Should give some increase in

I was at a folk music festival yesterday, and saw a PJ taking crowd shots
using a Canon 1Ds and a big lens (not sure what it was - some
investigating on my part could figure it out).

My question is: why do newspapers use these expensive cameras for prints
that simply end up on newsprint, which has poor resolution? Why use a
11MP camera with expensive lenses (the whole unit costing in the thousands
of dollars), when a much smaller, less expensive camera would provide the
same results, given the nature of their use?

I understand why someone shooting for National Geographic or some other
higher quality print magazine would use a higher priced set up such as a
1Ds. But newsprint is such a terrible medium for such an expensive piece
of electronics and optics!

Any explanation?

Resolution and the limit

2006-08-08 Thread Powell Hargrave
Some interesting comments I lifted from the ProRental list.

Powell

=

Date: Tue, 08 Aug 2006 02:36:26 -0400
From: Steven Inglima [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [ProRental] Resolution and the limit
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In response to Lee:

All other things being equal - yes, larger pixel sites means more
volume of light captured and that means better signal to noise ratio and
greater dynamic range. Smaller pixel sites also affect the ability of a
given lens to resolve details to the resolution of a chip.

All else being equal, of course, this is correct. What can change the
equation is the quantum efficiency of the sensor itself. If a given
sensor converts, let's say, 20% of the photons into electrons, and the
gathering area of the photo site is reduced by 20%, then should expect
to lose dynamic range as the shadows will be getting relatively little
information. But, if a different sensor can achieve a conversion of 40%
of the photons to electrons, then it's possible to shrink the photo site
and retain the same dynamic range.

We are already at the limit of resolution with many of the lenses
currently available and more pixels crammed into the same size chip are
simply not going to offer much more that bigger file sizes!

There are rumors flying around about a 22mp Canon - even the very best
of the current Canon lenses would fail to perform at the resolution of
such a chip -- bigger file size but the same image detail and a good
chance that there would be lass dynamic range as well. Doesn't sound too
promising to me! More sophisticated noise reduction could help with the
dynamic range part of the equation but it would require much more
advanced optics to provide the needed extra resolution and I don't see
that happening any time soon, certainly with popular zooms!

Without confirming or denying the existence of an upcoming 20mp+ Canon,
the math of optical requirements is something that we can demonstrate. A
5 micron photosite would require 100 lpm resolution from the lens. While
this is indeed a high benchmark, there are a number of lenses that Canon
makes today that can achieve this. And of course, if a slightly larger
micron photo site, let's say 5.5 would be employed, that would lower the
resolution requirement. So, in other words, you can't necessarily know
what's about to happen performance wise in digital photography on the
immediate horizon :)

1/ (2x .0055)= 90.9 lpm requirement. There are quite a few lenses in the
Canon system that can achieve this resolution.

You can read about the Nyquist limit and other Fourier equations at :

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/NyquistFrequency.html

Or, you can just keep posted...cause Canon isn't likely to announce that
they will never make a camera with more resolution than the 1Ds mkII.

Best wishes,

Steven Inglima

Not enough information. What type of files are you saving? .tif, .jpg, psd.
These also can be compressed which changes file size.

When you resized to print did you resample the file which makes a new
smaller or larger file. Or just change the PPI which does not change the
file only the printing instructions.

Powell

No way to ask this and remain less than embarrassed. Not going to try.
Let's say I have a frame commercially scanned (35mm for example) that
turned out to be an 8-bit at 50MB. (it's a beautiful scene, by the
way).
I decide to print an 8x10, size it accordingly and notice that the file
is now 17MB or?.
I now fiddle with the image, I like the changes, so re-burn it.
Dumb alert: do I need to restore the dimensions in PS to approximate
the initial file size (50MB)? Will I have lost MB's if I don't?
I gather not, but...?
Thanks for your pitty. :)

Sensor is a tiny 7.6 x 5.7 mm with 6.3 Mega pixels. APS size equivalent
would be about 46 Mega pixels.
Useable ISO 1600 with noisy ISO 3200. Ya I know there is lots of in camera
noise reduction and some image quality problems but still most images look
just fine.

Re: K10D - More News

2006-08-05 Thread Powell Hargrave
Did you look at the photos? The baby shot is at ISO 800 and I see no sign
of excessive noise reduction. I have an old 3 Mega pixel Nikon 990 which
has about the same size sensor and more noise at ISO 200. The F30 has
twice as many pixels and less noise. The Fuji sensor does suffer from a
lack of dynamic range but this can also improve as the technology matures
and improves. I know the theory and I also know what has been achieved
with improving sensor and electronics fabrication. I am not suggesting a
40 Mega pixel APS sensor (at present) but I am sure that in a few more
years 20 Mega pixels with low noise and a decent dynamic range will likely
be possible.

I like it the way it is. A lovely piece of nature with great depth and detail.
I wonder if those who want to simplify it come from more simple places. My
natural surroundings are mostly as complex and over grown as Bruce's lovely

focus adds to the 3d effect.

Nice colors, interesting branches, but overall a bit

John Francis wrote:

Yes - don't put the DNG files in the same folder as the PEFs
in the first place :-)

It's not actually redundant behaviour - the DNG converter is
documented to behave this way, and will take the opportunity
to change the DNG internal structure, if necessary, to bring
it up to the format the DNG converter now writes. This may
mean adding extra DNG tags (including, I believe, the ability
to fill them out from the copy of the Pentax MakerNote tag in
the old DNG file - the only software I am aware of that knows
how to look inside that copy of the Pentax private data).

If your DNG files are already up to date, of course, then it
is redundant behaviour for now. But the next time the DNG
format is enhanced you'll appreciate being able to simply
re-process your DNGs (retaining any additional information
put there by Adobe Camera Raw, or by other programs), rather
than having to go back to the original PEFs. That might not
be a big deal. But, there again, if you have relegated the
PEFs to offline storage (or even, heaven forbid, deleted
them entirely) it make be a very big deal indeed!

Hadn't considered that. OK a good feature. Adding a switch to turn it off
would also be a good feature.

Loading to a sub folder is OK but an annoying extra step. As is deleting
the duplicates when you forget. :)

It's basically an end run on net neutrality by telecom carriers looking
for what is effectively a subsidy through ending net neutrality. The
bottom line is that they want it to underwrite expansion of their
capital infrastructure in the form of physical networks. That, at a
time when even industry publications like Network World say there is a
glut of capacity. IMHO, that's the real agenda, these carriers built
too much capacity, they have lots of it after a round of mergers, and
now they want Congress to effectively tax all of us to pay for their
poor business choices. Sadly, that tax will also limit free and open

La Crosse charger highly recommended.

I read the La Crosse delivers a more reliable charge at 500-700ma as it can
do a better job of detecting the cut off point. I was having some flaky
battery problems at 200ma which vanished when I upped the charge rate.
700ma is still well below the safe charge limit.

One bad battery in a set can ruin your day and you need a charger with
individual circuits and a readout to spot the bad one. I have also found
some NiMH can self discharge much faster than the advertised rate.

I think a good way to shorten the life of NiMH cells is to fast charge
them. I charge mine at 200 ma.

I had a weird problem while printing the other day.

A couple of the latest BW photos I was printing to an ~11x14 size
were coming out with a slight magenta tint on the Epson Enhanced
Matte A3 paper. This despite being fully color managed and making
dozens of seemingly identical, perfectly neutral renderings of the
same file on the same paper in US Letter size. My guess is that that
box of EEM has a slightly off formulation with respect to the EEM
profile supplied for the printer.

Thankfully, the Epson R2400 has the Advanced BW options. I told
Photoshop to let the printer do the color adjustments and then used
the BW controls in the Epson driver to print the image with a
slightly warm tone.

Two others of the photos in that set have a lot of very deep tones.
The difference between the just printed copy and the fully dried-down
copy a day later is large ...

Printing remains a fussy business, regardless of how sophisticated
the technology. Where the ink hits the paper remains a certain amount
of one-by-one randomness.

I assume all of you are aware that you can go the other direction as well.
OS-X (Intel version) will load and run (with a surprisingly small amount
of work) on newer non-Mac Intel PC's with no glitches. While Apple has
been good about making the ability to load Windows on the Intel Macs
available (the information was already widely dispersed on the internet),
their lawyers have been equally busy trying to stem the proliferation of
the information that the reverse is available. You'll find some of the
sites that had this information now have link removed at the request of
Apple's Legal Department. Best possible case, however, is that this is
simply a delaying tactic. There's really not much of a problem finding the
files you need.

But OS-X (intel) has been running on, for example, common Dell laptops
since at least August of last year, when some folks got the Developer's Kit
version up and running. No problems, no glitches.

So for those early adopters and those tired of waiting for Apple Intel
laptops, or those who want lower prices or greater variety, etc., and who
have a bit of computer savvy, the opportunity is there to have three
systems (Linux, Windows and OS-X) running on your system, with the choice
available at boot time.

PESO: Through a windshield dirtily

I was given about 25 feet, 8 meters of very expired, June 1979, bulk Tri-X

very grainy results with shadows blocked up. The rest of the film will
soon be in the trash unless someone can suggest an interesting use for it.

A couple of shots of my sons house construction were worth saving and then
there is this one. It is really bad! I think the Pancake lens does a nice

So why do I kind of like this shot? Just my poor taste? Or is it

PC Inspector Image recovery info

2006-04-10 Thread Powell Hargrave
PC Inspector image recovery program:
http://www.pcinspector.de/smart_media_recovery/uk/welcome.htm

This pay what you want shareware program works well recovering Pentax PEF
RAW files from flash cards after an accidental delete or format. The TIFF
option must be selected in the Format Type option menu and the recovered
files will have a .tif extension. They can be renamed to .pef files.
Adobe PSCS2 and Bridge will open the .tif files properly.

I emailed offering to send a PEF file so they could add Pentax to their
Format options with the following results. It would be nice if they added
Pentax but the program is still a great utility to have as it works.

Dear Mr. Hargrave,

Thank you for contacting PC Inspector Service Team.

Normally, in order to include further formats in our list of supported
files you could simply send us three samples attached in an email of the
format you are attempting to recover.

However, at the moment, we are not accepting requests for new formats, as
the number of queries received have exceeded the available time to test
each file and eventually rewrite the software accordingly.

We are sorry about this inconvenience. We invite you to contact us again in
the near future if you wish to have the format included, so that we can
inform you whether we are again accepting new formats.

We apologise for this inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

Dear Team,

It has been found that using the TIFF option in your selection menu will
properly retrieve Pentax PEF RAW files. This has been tested by several
people and with different model Pentax DSLR cameras. The only 'small'
problem is that the retrieved files are of course named as .tif.

It should be easy for you to add a Pentax option to the selection menu
which uses the TIFF recovery and changes the file extension to .pef.

Likely the easiest option addition you ever make. Thanks for you
consideration and the fine program with does work almost perfectly
recovering Pentax PEF RAW files.

All the best

Re: PC Inspector Image recovery info

Had not thought of that as the DS will not produce TIFF files.

Powell

To be fair to them, it would be better to have the program detect when a
TIFF file was a Pentax RAW file and handle it automatically - otherwise
you'll run into problems if you have a mixture of PEF and TIFF files on
the same disk - so it's possibly not quite as easy as you might think...

I one cool feture on a DSLR (but impossible to implement because cards

enough so buffer never goes full.

Then you can push the button till the card is full :D

You can not select Pentax PEF in their menu but if TIFF is selected the
files will be recovered. Opening the TIFF in PSCS2 activates ACR. Guess
you could rename them to PEF files. Seems like this could be another
essential tool.

I am attempting to send them a PEF so they can update their file selection
in the program.

Thanks Dave.
