Re: OT: Leica M8 digital unveiled
Just picked up the M8. First impressions (pictures will have to wait until tomorrow): - Really solid. - Very nice user interface (mechanical and software)... especially the menus. Super easy to navigate and work with; everything is very obvious. - Lowest ISO is 160 (1/8000th top shutter speed) - Highest ISO is 2500. - It's built very, very well- but you can tell that the soul has changed. When you take the bottom off, it's a digi-cam- no doubt about it. - Even the LCD has a very high quality anti-reflective coating- looks like the front of a multicoated lens Things to get used to: - Shutter button feels weird to me. It's just different from the M7... there are three steps now. - The top of the camera looks empty without the cocking lever. - The Self-timer/C/S/OFF selection switch is too easy to turn IMHO. And they should have put single shot all the way on one end instead of the middle of the stroke. (if you just slide it all the way on w/o looking, you get self-timer... you should get single shot IMHO). - With the 1.33x crop, the framelines are different and my brain doesn't recognize them. Maybe this is because I'm used to the .8x finder. - Seems slightly fatter and heavier than the M7. - Motor whirring sound after the shot. -Ryan Gonz wrote: Its real, or so it would seem, since its now up on DPreview. rg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 9/14/06, Godfrey DiGiorgi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: while we're having a love fest on the K10D another leak ... in french (babelfish does a good translation) http://www.macandphoto.com/2006/09/prise_en_main_d.html I think I saw a couple of pigs flying south a few moments ago ... ;-) I'll drool anyway. The biggest complainers seem to be the Canon users (but Canon 85 f1.2L's are ridiculously expensive). My complaint is about normal lengths, ala 50mm. A 31mm perspective is fine, but the 31mm focal length doesn't look normal at all to me. I'm not sure what you're saying, Ryan. If you're using a 16x24mm sensor and fit a 35mm lens, you get the same field of view as you do with a 50mm lens fitted on a 24x36mm film body. That implies the same perspectives as well, since perspective is a function of distance. A 31mm lens is a little wider than that film 'normal' but is still within the range of normal. What about the 31mm focal length doesn't look normal to you on your *ist D? It appears to be a crop of a wide angle lens, which it is. In particular, informal head and shoulders shots look a bit odd if I'm close to the subject. The shoulder may seem enlarged if I'm taking a profile, for example. Whereas a 50mm would compress this distance more. I thought I would be at home with the 31mm limited on the D, but using a wide angle lens to achieve a normal-length crop is a bit wonky to me. I still like it, I wish I was using a 50mm focal length instead of a 31mm lens cropped. -R -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

All that matters is that the profile is applied while it's still a voltage readout, not after it's become bits and bytes. What the scales show is that an unmanipulated linear greyscale produced by a digital camera has considerably darker shadows than a non-linear greyscale produced by film. Correcting the difference in levels leads to nasty posterisation bands in the shadow tones. These are 8bit scales and each step is as near to true as I could get (one or less levels error) so 12 or more bits will be better, but the correction of the linear greyscales to anything like the evenly spaced tonal rendition of the non-linear greyscales will always be an inferior option unless considerably greater bit depth is offered. It would be much better if digital cameras could output files with a non-linear characteristic curve. Except that the sensor is linear- if it's a CCD anyway. It's a photo (okay, electron) counter. If you digitize the output in a non-linear space, you're not getting as much (good) information as if it was a linear digitization. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: Tonal gradation in shadows - The $67 Question?
It's all about how our eyes see versus how sensors see. The sensor may technically be correct, but I want to photograph things the way that I see. Me too. But the data coming from the _physics_ of the CCD is linear. I could understand this if the CCD was outputting digital information and arbitrarily reassigning the values caused stairstepping type errors, but the CCD is analogue. What it's outputting is voltages. Can't the conversion be profiled? Regards, Anthony Farr Sure... but a log/log representation would start to have big rounding effects at each higher stop; in other words, it would be stair stepping right past data as it moved up the curve. If the CCD recorded an apparent doubling in brightness as a doubling in voltage your scheme would work great (like film). But it doesn't. A doubling in brightness represents a four-fold increase in charge. (whereas your film, our eyes, etc. see this as 2x) I don't like the word brightness. It makes this discussion difficult. Reinstall from scratch is now on my To-Do list. Unless you're running your own mail server, getting more PDML posts has nothing to do with your rollback. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: What caused this phenomenon? Is it simply an effect of the petals being out of focus? Yeah- I think so. I think the out of focus (and esp. in front of the focus) area is just plain strange looking. Very shallow depth of field, but since you captured that in focus petal in the rear, it makes a bit of an illusion- my eye sees it as painting-like. Must be something to do with the contrast. Try cropping the in focus petals out- it may be a really good keeper! -Ryan
Re: photography from an airplane and unsharp mask
2. When do you use sharp/unsharp filters in the PS or other software? (any hints on how to judge a reasonable level?) Keep in mind your target. Sharpening for the web is different than sharpening for a printer, for example. I believe some of the sharpening plug-ins available keep this in mind. Also, if you start to see halos, you've gone too far. IMHO, the image is too sharp... you've created some moire in the building windows. The issue to me is not digital vs film but serious SLR vs Point Shoot. Go get a (comparatively) crappy film PS and compare that to your SLR's - same thing. Or compare a 67 to your 35mm SLRs. Basically, I am saying that your digital PS is just that - a PS. If your expectation is set to what the camera can do, then you will not be disappointed. So yes, we are basically agreeing - that SLR's are way better than PS for getting good images. The medium really doesn't matter here. When I just had the 67's, MZ-S and a Nikon Coolpix 990 (PS), I almost never used the digital because I don't use PS very often. When I got a digital SLR, then things started to change, because the tools were more equivalent.

Aaron Reynolds wrote: So if I understand all this correctly, if I wanted to run Aperture on my old G4 dual 867, the best upgrade I could make would be a kickass video card? No. You need a new computer. The minimum requirements are a 1.8GHz G5, which is dog slow running aperture. You need a kickass video card in a new kickass computer. Does it make sense that Lightroom has been released to battle Aperture, to try to maintain Adobe's dominance in the photographic world? Yes. And Lightroom, although it has lower minimum requirements, still needs a very fast box. I would say it's unusable (at least if you're actually using it for production) on the G4/low end G5s. -Ryan ] -Aaron

No green buton, AE-L button
On the DL, my procedure for metering and using an A* lens: - Set M mode - Frame picture (make attempt at composition) - Pick aperture (choose how much pudding around subject :-) - Stop down with DOF preview and hold - Adjust wheel to appropriate exposure (indicated by 0.0 in finder). - (still holding DOF preview) Hit AE-L - Relax (finally release DOF previe- start physical therapy on thumb) - Trigger shutter (subject has left the area). Am I missing a short cut? TIA, -Ryan

With a K or M lens, you don't need to stop down, just hit the AE-L button, which functions like the Green button when using a lens with the aperture set to something other than A. Hmmm. This doesn't seem to work that way on the DL- doesn't meter. -R -Adam
