PESO - Soul
Is it me or does this guy look like Smokey Robinson? Taken at a local fair on the weekend, this is local RB guy Jarvis Church (ex of the Philosopher Kings): http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.ca/2013/08/soul.html?m=1 Took the wonderfully heavy Vivitar S1 f2.8 35-85mm and in the low light the wide-ish aperture was utilized. RE: PESO: Vintage Garage - Rogers, Nebraska
When I was a kid The Garage was where our parents took cars for repairs. There were no domestic garages on our street, just rows of duplexes (which I later found out are really fourplexes but we called them duplexes). So The Garage was the auto repair shop. They were usually (but not always) part of a gas station. It never occurred to me that gas stations no longer repair cars and auto repair shops are so specialized that we don't call them garages any more. I guess that's progress. Well, that's a wonderful shot, Darren! I daresay there aren't many of those left and you captured it exquisitely. Even a vintage truck for atmosphere. Wonderful, evocative. Cheers, frank --- Original Message --- From: Darren Addy pixelsmi...@gmail.com Sent: August 6, 2013 8/6/13 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Subject: PESO: Vintage Garage - Rogers, Nebraska Rogers is a Nebraska village on Hwy 30 (historically known as the Lincoln Highway) and is almost exactly at the midpoint of traveling between the larger Nebraska cities of Columbus and Fremont, Nebraska. According to the 2010 census, there were 95 people living in Rogers. This old timey auto repair shop (also known as a garage) has long captured my attention while driving past, but this is the first time I took the opportunity to stop and photograph it. As luck would have it, after one shot my camera battery died and I didn't have another with me, so I got only one shot. I had some settings wrong, so it came out with the wrong color balance and exposed improperly but I didn't get rid of it. A long time later I tripped across the image and decided to have go at it with the Nik software filters of Color Efex Pro 3 and then Silver Efex Pro. This was my favorite of the various iterations that I made. Later I took the train to Paris and cycled back to Rouen via Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Medan, Meulan, Giverny/Vernon and Les Andelys. Then a round trip to Ry (for Mme Bovary), Vascoeuil, Lyons la Foret, Mortemer, Fleury-sur-Andelle and back via Montmain. A day trip by train to Cleres, which is lovely, and finally cycled back from Rouen to Dieppe (in 3 hours!). 700km / 420 miles in total on the bike. The whole thing was really enjoyable, apart from getting caught up in rush hour traffic trying to get out of Paris. There are still many photos which I haven't looked at yet, but this is a quick selection mainly from Rouen. It wasn't specifically a photo trip - it's awkward to cycle and take pictures at the same time! The routes were determined by literary and arty choices, as well as their historical interest and beauty. I stayed in a lovely gite, which I can recommend to anyone who wants to spend a few days in Rouen: http://www.gites-beffroy.fr/ I hope you enjoy the pictures. RE: PESO 2013 - Houston Airport - GDG
There is no place like an airport. Bus terminals and train stations tend to be downtown; you can walk about during layovers. You basically can't leave an airport between flights. Most of them have no pedestrian access off and on the property. Even if you could leave, what would you do? Walk several miles to get to an Airport Hilton/Holiday Inn/Ramada/whatever? Hang around a Golden Griddle House of Pancakes? Strip club? All you can do is hang around the airport. It's stultifying. You captured it well. RE: PESO - Feeding Time for Grebelings
This was in Col. Sam Smith Park right next to the Lake Shore Yacht Club. Wish I'd have seen the young ones piggy-backing dad. They're too big for that now. I saw them try to climb up but parent was having none of it. I think the reason this year was so successful for breeding is that they attached huge pink and white floating balls to the floating nests. I guess the scared predators away. Certainly scared photographers away. They were so ug-lee! But the results speak for themselves. Thanks for the comments, Gerrit, Bruce, Dan and everyone else who commented and looked. I'm glad I got to capture it, even if not the most technically proficient photo. So the excitement is that for the first time that anyone remembers the local red necked grebe eggs have hatched and no less than five baby grebes have been spotted around the lakeside park near my apartment! I was thrilled to spot this parent feeding a little one: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/07/feeding-time-for-grebelings.html?m =1 It was a one shot deal. The next dive the parent came up quite far away and the little one drifted over, out of my range. I did continue shooting but they were too small and blurry. I watched with fascination for half an hour while mom or dad (don't know which) performed dive after dive, coming up with a small fish each time for baby. Then they retired to their nest. So this isn't the sharpest shot ever, but it was the only one I got. As a document it's okay, but not a great nature photo, to very sure. Still, I hope you enjoy it. Comments welcome. I was feeling unwell on Monday so was at home. About 5:30pm the skies opened up and it rained so hard it seemed the rain was going ~up~ as it was bouncing so violently on the window sills. PESO - Lemmy Merckx
Eddy Merckx is perhaps the greatest road racer (cyclist) ever. After he retired he made bikes. Very good ones. His lesser known brother Lemmy made lesser good bikes: http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2013/07/lemmy-merckx.html?m=1 Whoever made the Lemmy Merckx downtube decal used exactly the same lettering as on Eddy's steel frames. I think it's quite funny (but not all will share my humour. Don't know this guy but he's got a messenger look about him. Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome. I don't often show misses, but this one's so close I had to share. RE: GESO - Stack Focusing Dragonflies in the Field
Stunning work. I certainly don't see the flaws that you do, Mark. I can't imagine how they could be better. I am not going to express this well but the last batch had an artificial look to them as if they were something other than photographs. They almost looked drawn or like computer reproductions or something. It's like they were hyper-real. I don't get that sense with these ones. They're just spectacular photographs. Book coming? These are National Geo. quality. They need to be seen by the masses. People need to see the beauty of nature. I worked on it yesterday with mixed results - still have a lot of stacks to go through. But here are the first: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/blog6.php/2013/07/06/stack-focusing-dragonflies-in-the-field All taken with Pentax K-5 and A*200 f4. No flash since I needed to grab a fast bunch of images to stack, and no way could the flash keep up. All of these photos got flaws but maybe on a less windy day this will work out. CC appreciated. PESO - Feeding Time for Grebelings
I don't know if that's really what baby grebes are called; I guess I should look it up. So the excitement is that for the first time that anyone remembers the local red necked grebe eggs have hatched and no less than five baby grebes have been spotted around the lakeside park near my apartment! I was thrilled to spot this parent feeding a little one: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/07/feeding-time-for-grebelings.html?m=1 It was a one shot deal. Re: PESO - Urban Photography
Thanks, Chris. Those photos are part of the main building for Ryerson University's School of Imaging Arts (formerly School of Photography; times change). I walk by it from time to time and always thought there was a good photo opportunity somewhere there and the gentleman sitting there last week provided that opportunity. There were a couple of interesting photos on that walk that I had to crop out for compositional reasons but what can you do? Apparently they have a most impressive archive there. I don't know how much they have on display but I certainly like what's on the wall. One of these days I'll have to check it out and report to the list. Sounds like an opportunity to revive TOPDML. ;-) Thanks to all who commented and looked. Glad you enjoyed.
