PESO - Soul

2013-08-07 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Is it me or does this guy look like Smokey Robinson?

Taken at a local fair on the weekend, this is local RB guy Jarvis Church (ex
of the Philosopher Kings):

 http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.ca/2013/08/soul.html?m=1

Took the wonderfully heavy Vivitar S1 f2.8 35-85mm and in the low light the
wide-ish aperture was utilized.

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Cheers,
frank

Hi all,
Her you'll find a gallery of pics shot by me at a Summer concert (beer
festival) of a Led Zeppelin all-female cover band.
This is the pic starting it all:

I quite like those pictures (some of them more than others, of course).
Which pics would you pick as the good ones?

RE: PESO: Vintage Garage - Rogers, Nebraska

2013-08-06 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
When I was a kid The Garage was where our parents took cars for repairs. There
were no domestic garages on our street, just rows of duplexes (which I later
found out are really fourplexes but we called them duplexes).

So The Garage was the auto repair shop. They were usually (but not always) part
of a gas station.

It never occurred to me that gas stations no longer repair cars and auto repair
shops are so specialized that we don't call them garages any more.

I guess that's progress.

Well, that's a wonderful shot, Darren! I daresay there aren't many of those
left and you captured it exquisitely. Even a vintage truck for atmosphere.

Wonderful, evocative.

frank

Rogers is a Nebraska village on Hwy 30 (historically known as the
Lincoln Highway) and is almost exactly at the midpoint of traveling
between the larger Nebraska cities of Columbus and Fremont,
Nebraska. According to the 2010 census, there were 95 people living in
Rogers. This old timey auto repair shop (also known as a garage)
has long captured my attention while driving past, but this is the
first time I took the opportunity to stop and photograph it. As luck
would have it, after one shot my camera battery died and I didn't have
another with me, so I got only one shot. I had some settings wrong, so
it came out with the wrong color balance and exposed improperly but I
didn't get rid of it. A long time later I tripped across the image and
decided to have go at it with the Nik software filters of Color Efex
Pro 3 and then Silver Efex Pro. This was my favorite of the various
iterations that I made. I may share the others later for a comparison.

Here are some pictures from my recent trip to Rouen et ses alentours:

http://www.web-options.com/Rouen2013/

I cycled from Greenwich to Newhaven, ferry to Dieppe arriving at 4am, then
cycled to Rouen. Later I took the train to Paris and cycled back to Rouen
via Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Medan, Meulan,
Giverny/Vernon and Les Andelys. Then a round trip to Ry (for Mme Bovary),
Vascoeuil, Lyons la Foret, Mortemer, Fleury-sur-Andelle and back via
Montmain. A day trip by train to Cleres, which is lovely, and finally cycled
back from Rouen to Dieppe (in 3 hours!). 700km / 420 miles in total on the
bike. The whole thing was really enjoyable, apart from getting caught up in
rush hour traffic trying to get out of Paris.

There are still many photos which I haven't looked at yet, but this is a
quick selection mainly from Rouen. It wasn't specifically a photo trip -
it's awkward to cycle and take pictures at the same time! The routes were
determined by literary and arty choices, as well as their historical
interest and beauty.

I stayed in a lovely gite, which I can recommend to anyone who wants to
spend a few days in Rouen:
http://www.gites-beffroy.fr/

I hope you enjoy the pictures. Some of them may seem a little obscure, but
they're intended for people in my French circle who will get the references.

This somewhat immature Heron was standing in a shallow Rouge River feeder
stream in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. As I approached it took flight. I
followed it downstream a couple hundred feet and saw another bird that appeared
to be a different species standing on a log (unfortunately, against a busy
background). He had a crown of feathers standing straight up and brown markings
on his neck. After studying the Audubon guide this morning, I've come to the
conclusion that they're one and the same. Herons all have that crown of
feathers, but this is the first time I've seen them extended.

 Excuse the banal title.

This is Jimmy Pants, eventual race winner of last when's Alleycat race,

PESO - Fixed

2013-08-02 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I was at an Alleycat bike race last weekend (illegal street race). It was for
single speed bikes only so it attracted lots of non-messenger fixed gear
afficionados.

They dress like messengers, wear messenger bags and ride brakeless fixies
around town. They're called fakengers (fake messengers, get it?) a name even
the poseurs have adopted with pride.

I thought this fakenger's bike looked cool:

 http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2013/08/fixed.html?m=1

For you bikies out there, check out the clearance between the tire and
downtube. Eek!

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

I finally got around to looking at the plane photos I took the night I
photographed the burrowing owl.
They're a bit rougher than I'd like. I was trying to not blow out the
colored lights, so everythng not self illuminated was exposed a bit
lower down into the noise, even so, I got a few decent shots,
artistically if not technically:

Photographing airplanes is definitely a speicalized skillset that I
haven't fully developed yet.

If you're curious, the rest of them are at:

or if you want to see the exif data for each shot:

They were all shot on with the Bigma on the K-5 II, at 3200-5000

If Knarf and Derby were to have an eccentric bastard Czech uncle, he
might have been Tichy:
http://www.messynessychic.com/2013/06/06/the-reclusive-peeping-tom-photographer-and-his-cardboard-camera/

Tichý is pictured here with one of his long telephoto lenses. He ground lenses
out of plastic with toothpaste and ash, putting them together with cardboard
toilet paper tubes, dressmaker’s elastic and old camera parts he found.

Tichý famously once said, “First of all, you have to have a bad camera”, and,

Too much beauty to pick a fave but that 66 (I think) Camero is wonderful. The

RE: PESO 2013 - Houston Airport - GDG

2013-07-20 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
There is no place like an airport. Bus terminals and train stations tend to be
downtown; you can walk about during layovers.

You basically can't leave an airport between flights. Most of them have no
pedestrian access off and on the property. Even if you could leave, what would
you do? Walk several miles to get to an Airport Hilton/Holiday
Inn/Ramada/whatever? Hang around a Golden Griddle House of Pancakes? Strip club?

All you can do is hang around the airport. It's stultifying.

You captured it well.

I have to say there are completely different takes on our two photos. Mine I
imagine a young child picking a bouquet for mom, seeing a dog to pet or a

child.

For yours I imagine a husband or boyfriend in big trouble who brings home a
peace offering and girlfriend/wife chases him from the home screaming and
crying, finally throwing the flowers after him, And you can keep your damned
flowers!

I am really trying to get to grips with reportage. Previously I would
have shot from the hip, but I'm forcing myself to stop, look through the
lens and compose. You would have thought that, for someone who regularly
films strangers with a huge TV camera, pointing a small still camera
would be easy. Not so.

Thanks for the comment and thanks to everyone who looked and commented. Just

It was a boring sunrise as sunrises go. Dark clouds to the east but
it was clearing up to the west and north.

Never did see the sun but there was a bit of red coming through the clouds.

Stuck it out for about a half an hour and was about to leave when I
notice red creeping across the bottom of the clouds. Got quite
pretty for only a few minutes, maybe two or three:

 Then it was gone.

 Pretty cool.

Great colour - your patience was rewarded.

I would have liked to have seen a little more of the water surface.
It looks as if there was some nice colour there as well.

Yes indeed Darryl, I was shooting from the hip. Not quite in continuous mode, I
was bracketting although I only shot the first two of three before I decided to
stop. By then I was past her and there were no more shots left to take.

Usually after I shoot from the hip I end up doing some straightening in PS but
the tilt worked for me so I left it.

I have the feeling that she wouldn't have taken kindly to having a camera in

Unless, I miss my guess, his eye was nowhere near the viewfinder. The
low camera angle looks as if the camera were dangling at his side as
he walked by (perhaps taking multiple shots in continuous mode)? I
don't think he would have gotten the natural pose if he'd had a camera

This is lovely. If you click through to the larger image, it is clear

RE: PESO - Feeding Time for Grebelings

2013-07-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
This was in Col. Sam Smith Park right next to the Lake Shore Yacht Club.

Wish I'd have seen the young ones piggy-backing dad. They're too big for that
now. I saw them try to climb up but parent was having none of it.

I think the reason this year was so successful for breeding is that they
attached huge pink and white floating balls to the floating nests. I guess the
scared predators away. Certainly scared photographers away. They were so ug-lee!

But the results speak for themselves.

Thanks for the comments, Gerrit, Bruce, Dan and everyone else who commented and
looked.

I'm glad I got to capture it, even if not the most technically proficient photo.

Cheers,
frank

I think we had a picnic in the same basin on June 20. Only saw 2 little ones
at the time. One was on dad's back but fell off when dad climbed onto the
nest.

I don't know if that's really what baby grebes are called; I guess I should
look it up.

So the excitement is that for the first time that anyone remembers the local
red necked grebe eggs have hatched and no less than five baby grebes have
been spotted around the lakeside park near my apartment!

I was thrilled to spot this parent feeding a little one:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/07/feeding-time-for-grebelings.html?m
=1

It was a one shot deal. The next dive the parent came up quite far away and
the little one drifted over, out of my range. I did continue shooting but
they were too small and blurry. I watched with fascination for half an hour
while mom or dad (don't know which) performed dive after dive, coming up
with a small fish each time for baby. Then they retired to their nest.

So this isn't the sharpest shot ever, but it was the only one I got. As a
document it's okay, but not a great nature photo, to very sure.

Still, I hope you enjoy it. Comments welcome.

frank

Re: PESO - Mist

I was feeling unwell on Monday so was at home. About 5:30pm the skies opened up
and it rained so hard it seemed the rain was going ~up~ as it was bouncing so
violently on the window sills.

Then after about five minutes of the deluge the power went out. Don't know when
it came back on but it was there when we awoke the next morning.

No flooding around us just no power for about ten or twelve hours. We got off
lucky.

A few small pockets of Mississauga were without power this morning but I think
it is all on now.

Hope your friends downtown got through ok.

PESO - Lemmy Merckx

2013-07-09 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Eddy Merckx is perhaps the greatest road racer (cyclist) ever. After he retired
he made bikes. Very good ones.

His lesser known brother Lemmy made lesser good bikes:

 http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2013/07/lemmy-merckx.html?m=1

Whoever made the Lemmy Merckx downtube decal used exactly the same lettering
as on Eddy's steel frames. I think it's quite funny (but not all will share my
humour.

Don't know this guy but he's got a messenger look about him.

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

PESO - Aussi Power Run

2013-07-08 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I don't often show misses, but this one's so close I had to share. Sadly, I
missed the focus (see how the guys behind him are sharp?), but otherwise I
think it would have been a fine shot:

Oh well.

Hope you enjoy anyway. Comments always welcome.

RE: GESO - Stack Focusing Dragonflies in the Field

2013-07-07 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Stunning work. I certainly don't see the flaws that you do, Mark. I can't
imagine how they could be better.

I am not going to express this well but the last batch had an artificial look
to them as if they were something other than photographs. They almost looked
drawn or like computer reproductions or something. It's like they were
hyper-real.

I don't get that sense with these ones. They're just spectacular photographs.

Book coming? These are National Geo. quality. They need to be seen by the
masses. People need to see the beauty of nature.

Cheers,
frank

Subject: GESO - Stack Focusing Dragonflies in the Field

I'm trying to get my insect photos up to the next level, and it seems
like stack focusing is part of the process to do that. I worked on it
yesterday with mixed results - still have a lot of stacks to go through.
But here are the first:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/blog6.php/2013/07/06/stack-focusing-dragonflies-in-the-field

All taken with Pentax K-5 and A*200 f4. No flash since I needed to grab
a fast bunch of images to stack, and no way could the flash keep up.

All of these photos got flaws but maybe on a less windy day this will
work out. CC appreciated.

Mark

PESO - Feeding Time for Grebelings

2013-07-07 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I don't know if that's really what baby grebes are called; I guess I should
look it up.

So the excitement is that for the first time that anyone remembers the local
red necked grebe eggs have hatched and no less than five baby grebes have been
spotted around the lakeside park near my apartment!

I was thrilled to spot this parent feeding a little one:

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/07/feeding-time-for-grebelings.html?m=1

It was a one shot deal. The next dive the parent came up quite far away and the
little one drifted over, out of my range. I did continue shooting but they were
too small and blurry. I watched with fascination for half an hour while mom or
dad (don't know which) performed dive after dive, coming up with a small fish
each time for baby. Then they retired to their nest.

So this isn't the sharpest shot ever, but it was the only one I got. As a
document it's okay, but not a great nature photo, to very sure.

Still, I hope you enjoy it. Comments welcome.

Cheers,
frank

Re: PESO - Urban Photography

2013-07-07 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Thanks, Chris. Those photos are part of the main building for Ryerson
University's School of Imaging Arts (formerly School of Photography; times
change). I walk by it from time to time and always thought there was a good
photo opportunity somewhere there and the gentleman sitting there last week
provided that opportunity. There were a couple of interesting photos on that
walk that I had to crop out for compositional reasons but what can you do?

Apparently they have a most impressive archive there. I don't know how much
they have on display but I certainly like what's on the wall.

One of these days I'll have to check it out and report to the list. Sounds like
an opportunity to revive TOPDML.

;-)

Thanks to all who commented and looked. Glad you enjoyed.

Cheers,
frank
