Fascinating. I have one in its box somewhere. I can still remember the
excitement of receiving it, my first insight into the world of digital
photography.

How quickly the future becomes the past.

"Review" between quotes because I'm not talking specs or anything, nobody
should care about that by now. It's more about my history with it and about
the photos I took.

Planning to do the K10D next and the K5 after that.

Comments welcome!

RE: Covid

2021-06-02 Thread rrvelar
Thanks, Ann, Brian, Dave, Mike & Stan,

I had the loss of taste for a while, nothing really foul tasting but really
only texture. The second Covid jab has helped a little I think, but it's
long term tiredness and lack of sleep that are the real issues. I have
follow up X-Rays, blood tests etc all planned out, so my social diary is
full.

I know someone locally who thinks (thought) the virus is all nonsense made
to scare the public, a view that changed when a relative died of it.

However, photography has been a help and a distraction, as it's got me out
and about, although I can't manage hills yet.

I had my first one in Feb, and the second a couple of weeks ago. It appears
that I caught it shortly after the first and spent many weeks either by the
open back door trying to breathe or in bed. I've now got a raft of problems
as a result and I can walk a mile again slowly. At one point is was a 20
minute sit down gasping for breath having gone as far as the front door.
Long Covid - I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Have the jabs!

The result should be a very accurate facsimile of what IR fm does.
The smart person would look at the results with an open mind prior to
labeling them "silly".

No idea how well it works with these features but I've been mightily
impressed so far. I'll certainly try those modes out and see how they
perform.

You won't regret it if standard lenses on full frame or short teles on APS-C
are your thing.
The DA20-40 was the best lens I never liked. I had one, more because it said
Pentax on it than for any pressing need, but I never really fell for it. It
is an excellent lens though, it just wasn't for me.

I tried it on a K3ii & a K1. Loved it on the K1 despite (or perhaps because
of) the combination weighing 2Kg as near as could be. It felt a really solid
combination as well it should.

I do a lot of 'walkabout' photography and the 20-40mm would be useful. The
K3iii on arrival will be matched with a 16-85mm WR to begin with.

As was, and did, the DFA* 85/1.4, and it was goofy expensive.
I'm not sure about the 70-210/4. It certainly didn't generate the buzz, but
it also isn't really a Pentax lens.
I agree that this will be tha fate of a K1III. I expect the 21Ltd will also
presell its first run, and quite possibly its second. Not a bad fate.
I'm not so hopeful about the updated 31, 43 and 77, though if they had put
them in new bodies with PLM autofocus motors they might have been onto
something. I'm not sure if new coatings and curved aperture blades are quite
enough. I really think they should have waited until after the 21Ltd, and
then given the legacy trio more than new lipstick.

===

I had a demonstration of the DFA*50/1.4 just before lockdown. From time to
time it gets discounted and the next time it does, I'll have one. I very
nearly walked out of the shop with one at the time.

My Limited collection is all under 4 years old and they will have to last
for many years. I would like to add the 20-40mm lens to the set.

I saw a message on my camera dealers website, which said that the first batch
of the new K3 were due, and would go straight out to those who pre-ordered
them. It won't be enough, so the next batch in next week will go out the same
way - and anyone who ordered in the last week or from now it will be later in
May when they see it arrive. I might have made the second batch to be sent.

The point is that a DSLR which supposedly is missing features and is very
expensive is not so much flying off the shelves, but flying off before they
make the shelves.

I see the future K1 iii selling as well as this.

The new K3 iii

2021-04-21 Thread rrvelar
I don't post often now, but this caught my attention.

In my inbox on the 1st of the month came a notification of the pending arrival
of the new K3 from my friendly camera dealer. Given it was the 1st of April, I
dismissed it as a joke, but no, there really was a new K3!

I looked at a few initial pre-production firmware reviews (one or two of which
didn't even have the camera) which I'm sure many of you have seen. Lots of
criticism to be found about it, the first easily dismissed about it not being a
mirrorless design. If you want a mirrorless camera there are plenty out there.
The next was the lack of a tilt screen. They are useful, but for me I rarely
use it other than when on a tripod for landscape images, and in such cases the
K1 will be on top of it. The K3 I use for recording street scenes and the new
touch screen looks more useful to me. It's heavy too they say, but I don't like
a light camera.

Over here it's £1899 and that appears to be the killer blow. At this price who
is it for at full frame DSLR money? Well, I'd imagine it's for folk with a
collection of K & M42 lenses who like the features of the new camera!

I'm certainly one of them and I put my order in some days ago and look forward
to it arriving on release.

As an aside, I bought my KP before release which was generally slammed in
reviews. A quite wonderful camera that's turned out to be. On the occasions
where a smaller camera is needed in situations where I might not have taken a
camera at all, I've taken photos in low light of friends on great nights out
that I could share (remember them, in olden times we went out and saw people
close up) which wouldn't win any prizes but recorded memories. That surely is
what photography is about.
