I spent a lot of time in RI, The area that Narragansett Bay takes up is
nearly the same size as the total land area of the state. It's a local
joke but you can get bumper stickers that say Pave the Bay, (instead
of Save the Bay).

Maybe so, but it's not sustainable.

40 or so years ago people were saying There's plenty of fish in the
sea. Well there isn't now. Just because there are a lot of whales
now, doesn't mean there always will be.

You talk to anyone who is involved in commercial fishing. Wild fish
stocks are in decline, fishermen are having to travel further
further to make a catch. All the while they're having to pay more on
fuel getting paid less for the catch.

I'm not saying whaling is right or wrong, but it's always dangerous
when people talk is if the supply of natural resources is bottomless
pit.

Dave

BTW the English name for the whales that Norway catch is Minke.

In principle I agree, but the problem around here (one of our main
incomes is from fish) is that the increasing number of whales and
seals is also hurting the amount of fish in the sea. So, the natural
balance has been shifted by us long ago and now we have to control
all parts to provide a sustainable population of both fish, whales

But DagT is right (for at least some environments).

For instance, it is known that indigenous Australians, in
northern regions, used fire to modify the landscape for thousands
of years. Fire is also a natural phenomenon for much of the
country. Further, there is evidence that the planting of exotic
grasses alters the nature of the fires (time and intensity).

One of the more controversial management issues up here is,
therefore, what sort of fire regime should we have? The natural
one? The one imposed by indigenous Australians? Some other
regime? If so, what?

But DagT is right (for at least some environments).

For instance, it is known that indigenous Australians, in
northern regions, used fire to modify the landscape for thousands
of years. Fire is also a natural phenomenon for much of the
country. Further, there is evidence that the planting of exotic
grasses alters the nature of the fires (time and intensity).

One of the more controversial management issues up here is,
therefore, what sort of fire regime should we have? The natural
one? The one imposed by indigenous Australians? Some other
 regime? If so, what?

Not entirely true, much of what we naively see as the balance of nature
is a result of human interference.

Yup. The golden hills we see here in California are actually the result of
the out of control spread of certain type feed/hay that was used to feed cows
that used to be all over these hills. People got used to it and now think it is
normal. That goes back all the way to the influx of the Spaniards and
haciendas. But actually the original California hills were probably a lot
greener,
covered with native grasses that were drought resistant. In some places those
native grasses have planted as decoration now. So of return to nature sort of
thing.

I award Dag 10 points for successfully diverting people away from the initial
question, whether he should warn people or not about photos of nude children.

That was part of the point.

Is the indigenous burning natural? If it is not, why not?

And it is impossible for humans to balance for the simple
reason that nature isn't balanced: natural systems are almost
always changing fast or slow, and in one way or another.

Championing freedom of speech in regard to nude photos of children
might be considered PC in some circles. But eating whales is a
definite no-no among that same constituency.
