Mine first Rottweiler could, but it had to be of something that was of interest to her. A picture of a dog or a cat would get her interest, a picture of a flower, not so much. My wife buys a picture calendar of the Rottweiler breed every year. Every month, we had the ritual of turning up the calendar to the new month and having Leica bark at it for a few minutes. One day I had her in the camera store I was working at. She spotted one of the life size cardboard cutouts of a young lady holding a camera that Fuji was using to pimp their stuff. That was cause for great distress and much barking. I've never had another dog that showed that much interest in the inanimate, but I have also never had or had anything to do with another dog as intelligent as that one. To answer your question, yes, but I think with caveats. I expect you can tell how intelligent the dog is by the interest it takes in something like what you are talking about. bill -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO - Hot Dogs for Jesus
My point was not that Jesus would have eaten hot dogs. Being triple O (Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnibenevolent) he would have known that hot dogs aren't good for a human body (and he was god and human all in one - like Certs). Even veggie dogs with soy in them (North American soy is one of the more genetically modified crops) are a poor choice. He also would have been compassionate and not eaten meat. And being omniscient he had the power to see into the future and would have wanted to set an example of good healthy eating for future generations of Christians. No, the title was saying that they were doing good works for god with wieners on a bun... It was intended as humour. ;-) Btw, thank for the comment, and thanks to all others who looked and commented. cheers, frank "What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof." -- Christopher Hitchens --- Original Message --- From: Mark Roberts Sent: September 30, 2012 9/30/12 To: "Pentax-Discuss Mail List" Subject: Re: PESO - Hot Dogs for Jesus Hot dogs for Jesus? Wendy thanks for your comments I'm glad you found them. This was my 1st attempt to document a dog show although I've been to several in the past. As soon as you said "junior handler" I knew you were a veteran show goer. The movie Best in show" is a classic and Ann S. mentioned it in her reply earlier in the thread. Well we disagree on favorites - 5048 is my choice - tells the story and captured a great expression too. Others I think are especially nice are 6076,4934,4736,5076,6364 (despite tech flaws) 6469 -- oh Im getting number crazy here.. I think you have about 10 really nice ones and the others are too cluttered or too dark. But the expressions you captured when they were on are wonderful. IT's fun how eager they all are to please, except for a couple who seem to be saying they could do with out the wwhole thing. be good to edit the shots down to the best photographically, as opposed to which doggie you like best.. wish there was a nice index thumbnail thing . I did go through all as I like critters in general and enjoy watching the Westminster, even though more a cat person. flikker doesn't like my browser much so it gets a bit tedious regardless of photo quality. Escellent gallery, Don, j I'm not so sure about your favorite, however; it looks more like a fancy rug than a dog. Re: Re: Re: Advice, Photgraphing dogs
My advice to my dog loving lady friend: I ended up advicing her to buy a Pentax K-r and a DA* 50-135mm SDM lens. This is available for 1500 Euros in Germany. This combo cost the same as a Canon 7D, body only. According to dpreview a Pentax K-r with an SDM lens is a decent choise for "sports and wildlife photography on a budget". Canon 7D and 70-200 lens. If it's outdoors, the f4 version will be fine. The autofocus on the Pentax cameras I've had (istD, K10, K7) just wasn't on par with Canon. Can't speak for Nikon, I've never used one. The two bodies I use for dogsports are 7D and 1Dmk3. The 7D replaced my 1Dmk2 after the shutter failed. If you know how to prefocus and know the flow of the events, you can do fine with a P&S. Megazooms or superzooms are usually P&S with bigger lenses. It's all about knowing how to use your gear. (I may be a Pentax, but that's not a "must". Regards Jens What kind of action? If it's predictable, such as Agility or Flyball, just prefocus on where you know something interesting will happen and learn how much shutter lag needs to be accommodated. For this, pretty much any SLR will be fine. A friend of mine shot Agility with an istD up until a year or so ago. He never printed bigger than 4x6, and the camera was fine for the purpose. OTOH, I recall my K10 not being able to AF fast enough to keep up with my dogs at play. I think I moaned about it on list one time and Wendy Beard sent me a file of one of her Belgians running straight at the camera with perfect focus. I think she was shooting a Canon 1D at the time. I'm not sure if the K5 is fast enough to keep up with the dogs or not, but I suspect not. I don't think Pentax is quite there yet, but I am prepared for the pleasant surprise that it will keep up. I'm pretty sure that the mid range Canons such as the 7D will, and the D7K that I played with seemed very quick as well. I think if the wants to do dogs at play, one of those cameras might be a better choice, the 7D in particular has some very nice features in the AF department that make it very desirable if fast AF of moving things is required. Re: Advice, Photgraphing dogs
Manual exposure and manual focus really speed things up. The K5 AF might keep up fine. I still like manual exposure since if does eliminate some shutter lag because the camera is not tempted to think about ti. Shutter lag tends to be a function of autofocus speed. Shutter lag can be pretty much eliminated if she can prefocus, hit the AF button and then click the shutter. Or, use the AF-C mode. If autofocus is an issue, and she get's Pentax she'd definitely want either a K-r or K-5. What is her budget? How often does she need to do these photos? Could you go and try a few and see which of your gear works, and get a better idea of what she needs? A lot of it is just going to boil down to skill, and practice. Throwing money at the issue can make up for some, but not all, lack of skill. Chances are that even most of the people on this list, which on average has pretty high photographic skills, wouldn't get great shots their first time taking photos of dogs in action. Advice, Photgraphing dogs
Hi List Hopefully some of you will know what to buy. A friend of mine wants to photograph dogs in action. She needs a camera, that will react quickly to presing the release button :-) She's not into photography as such, but needs a camera that can shoot moving dogs at a distance. Shoe doesn't min buying a DSLR. I guess maybe a 50-200mm lens would do the trick. Low noice would be perfect due to the need for fast shutter speeds. Which body and which lens should she boy?
