Re: Eagles on the Mississippi
Wow! that must have been something to see live. Good catch, Bob! Glad the bit of snow didn't cancel your plans all together! Re: Eagles on the Mississippi
Thanks Dave. And Ken the bald eagles are now rather abundant along the upper Mississippi. My picture was just outside Davenport, Iowa near Lock Dam #14. There are more eagles at the Lock Dam alongside the Rock Island Arsenal. We watched a podcast of eaglets from Decora Iowa last spring, a bit farther north. And I've seen many along the rivers in southern Minnesota. They are a treat. Regards, Bob S. On Mon, Jan 23, 2012 at 8:44 AM, David J Brooks pentko...@gmail.com wrote: Good photo none the less. Re: Eagles on the Mississippi
We were told at one of the eagle days presentations (back in the late 80's) that the colder the winter along the rivers, the farther south the eagles would go, seeking open water, so they could get at the fish. They especially like to congregate around lock dams due to the stun effect on the fish after they came over the dam. I remember seeing eagles hopping along the ice on the down side of the dams picking up the stunned fish. Nice catch. I like the composition and the pattern the bare branches make. Also, I just love eagles. Thanks Dan. Eagles are a treat any time. Our other obligations only left us 20 or 25 minutes watching them. We'll spend longer next time. Regards, Bob S. On Sun, Jan 22, 2012 at 8:32 PM, Daniel J. Re: Eagles on the Mississippi
When we lived in St. Charles, Missouri, we'd visit the Clarksville Dam, north of St. Louis for their Eagle days celebration - biggest gathering of eagles I'd ever seen outside of Alaska. We watched the lazyeagles get the stunned fish on the downside of the dam. We've started to see Bald Eagles the last few years in Traverse City, Michigan - yeah!
