But you're probably right that I should just replace them outright. Just a followup, I decided to hold my breath and have a go at it today. I shook up the cartridges one by one as described above, then ran three consecutive head-cleaning cycles (I remember reading somewhere, possibly here, that the 2nd and 3rd cycles each run a little more aggressively provided you don't do anything else between the cleaning cycles). After that It needed 3 cycles of nozzle check and head clean to return a good test pattern. I'm currently running the alignment procedure but I think one of the heads may have clogged again - I'll probably have occasional issues like that for a little while. But you can definitely colour me surprised. I thought I'd be fighting an expensive uphill battle just to get a decent test pattern. Re: Extreme printer head cleaning tips?
Anyone have any other cleaning ideas? First off, the warnings... Things not to do. Do not use Window cleaners, Alcohol, Bleach, Peroxide, Lighter fluid, degreasers, engine cleaners, mineral spirits or lacquer thinner. Also do not use force or compressed air as these these can cause serious damage to the print head. Looks like Formula 409 is Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, which doesn't appear to conflict with your list (from the little I remember from high school chemistry, anyway). No wonder the Epson rep recommended it. :) I am seriously curious what is in those cleaning solutions you linked to. You say not to use force, but those syringe methods force cleaning fluid through the nozzles. Is this not the sort of force you mean? Re: Extreme printer head cleaning tips?
Hello Cory, I've had somewhat similar experiences. The higher end Epsons seem to be much better about head clogs (not happening), but I have thrown away 3 low end Epsons with exactly your experience. I have an HP sitting here for the last couple of years with nary a hiccup. My general recommendation to people is if they print very sparingly, to get an HP. If they print quite a bit, then perhaps go the Epson route. Mind you, these are not photo printing people as a rule, just the regular shmoe who prints on plain paper. -- Best regards, Bruce Saturday, October 25, 2008, 5:32:49 PM, you wrote: CW John, CW I believe I've cured my print head clogging problem altogether. Re: Extreme printer head cleaning tips?
I think what 'they' mean is: Don't force the plunger in the syringe any harder that it takes to fill the nozzle tube, then let it sit 3+ hours (overnight is best) If it's really dried up in there, you may have to repeat the process. But don't try to force the dried ink through the nozzles with syringe pressure. Wait until it liquifies and gentle pressure will them force the goo through the heads onto the paper towel you slide under them - you did remember to put that under their, didn't you? :-0 Joseph McAllister Pentaxian On Oct 25, 2008, at 23:01 , John Celio wrote: You say not to use force, but those syringe methods force cleaning fluid through the nozzles. The most useful to me was:This is just crazy... I purchased an Epson 2100 of a guy that was fed up with clogging. He sold it for $130(!) He had had it in for service, but was told that the printer head had to be replaced. Well, I took the chance and bought the printer and at the same time, I ordered the cleaning kit from you guys (I found your site after doing some googling). A printing pattern indicated that two of the cartridges (well, not the cartridge but the cone-shaped thing underneath the cartridge) were completely blocked. There was a lot of yellow ink around the yellow cone indicating that it was blocked. The other one that was blocked was the light black cone. So I pushed through some solution (by applying the syringe on the cone - couldn't actually get it to fit on the cone, but I put some pressure on it and depressed the plunger slowly) and in no time, it came through on the paper that I had carefully fed through the paper feeder from the front side (i.e. clog dissolved!). I then ran 3 head cleaning cycles and did a nozzle check, and guess what?!?! the pattern was *PERFECT*. I just laughed out loud. I couldn't believe it. Well, I still can't. I guess I should do some more printing before I celebrate my best purchase ever! :) http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/20993 Joseph McAllister Pentaxian -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I find the best prevention is to turn the inkjet printers off as soon as you are finished printing. That caps the heads when they get parked. If you are going to put the printer away to use your newer better one, remove the cartridges, and use a cleaning solution to clear the heads of ink. When you take it out again, replace the cleaning pads, as they will have hardened up and no longer absorb the ink when you clean your heads. I believe I've cured my print head clogging problem altogether. I got rid of my Epson stylus color photo printiamagigger 925 and bought an HP printer. Only reason I haven't upgraded is because I can't afford a new (or used) printer with the capabilities of the 2200 (13 wide x 44 long, roll feed, pigment inks, etc). I know HPs don't clog as much, but their inks aren't as good as the high-end Epsons. If all I needed was a document printer, I'd buy an HP in a heartbeat. Actually, my regular printer is an old HP Deskjet 932C, which I used in college to print photos for my first photography class in 2000. Good little workhorse printer.
