Re: Lucky you if you rented expensive gear from Calumet yesterday...

2014-03-14 Thread Christine Aguila
Yes, I have the same feeling about Central Camera, but I'm not even sure they
are carrying much new cameras. A few months ago I thought for sure I'd be able
to play with the Fuji x10, but they didn't have any in stock, which greatly
surprised me. I thought for sure they'd have Fuji stuff.

I don't want to see brick and mortar stores to go away, but I have to say I
find that often I go to a store looking for something, can't find it, and the
sales clerk says I should go to the store's web site and I'd be able to order
it online. When the consumer hears that enough, they start staying home to do
their shopping at the computer, which doesn't help brick and mortar sales.
Seems to me a new business model is needed, some kind of hybrid approach that
is healthy for online and brick and mortar sales--as well as helpful to the
consumer.

Cheers, Christine

Thanks, Ken. I forgot about Altex. I did have to get other supplies as well: a
67mm lens cap and a shoulder strap for my new tripod. But next time I will
remember to order from Altex. I don't think I've ever ordered from them, but I
know you guys endorse them. Big thanks for the reminder. Cheers, Christine

Re: Lucky you if you rented expensive gear from Calumet yesterday...

2014-03-14 Thread John

That looks like the shop I bought my first SLR from. It was a dark &
grungy little hole-in-the wall place that used to be in downtown Raleigh.
Inside was something like Olevander's wand shop out of the Harry Potter
movies.

It was a one man operation that closed up when the old man died.

A shame really, it would make all the hipsters swoon, but those
operations just can't compete with big box stores.

Another vote for Atlex...I know you've been using Epson paper, but check
out Red River Paper if you get a chance. They offer a wide variety of
comparable paper, excellent customer service and lots of good printing
info on their web site including ICC profiles for their paper and a
multitude of printers.
