Darn, I didn't include my ol' 1964 MG in my old sig -that I can't find
anymore- that read something like:

Pentax, Beta, Laserdisc, Tubes, Apple Mac (add MGB here)
Living large with the best, but out of sight of the rest

My first wife had a Hunter Green 64 MGB with a black canvas and leather top.
Mine was baby blue, until I got T-boned by a cab in San Francisco driving home
after work at 2 AM. Once repaired it was an eggshell white with a broad blue
racing stripe on either side of the centerline, blue leather top and tonneau
(sic). Susan got T-boned by a trolley car in the Avenues one day, but insisted
on driving it even though the rear axle was about 15 degrees off from the front
axle, causing it to crab along. Both cars had wire wheels. Kept me busy with my
spoke wrench, vacuum gauge to balance the two SU downdraft carbs, and little
funnel to get the proper oil into the dashpots.

Downside? The transmission on both cars went bad within days of each other in
1969, prompting two weeks off work for me whilst I rebuilt them both in the
landlords garage, equipped with one 75 watt bulb hanging from the ceiling.
Never done any of that kinda work before, so I followed the instructions in the
Clymers. About $275 per for first and reverse gears, new shifting forks, seals
and a couple of brass syncros each.

Fun times (I was stoned a lot in those days) !!

Ending? I traded mine in on a lease of a brand new beige VW Westfalia

As angry as I still am at them all these years later, they weren't yet
hardened, experienced criminals, just stupid teenage boys heedless of
the cost others would have to pay for their vandalism. I don't even
think it ever occurred to them that someone might call the cops ... or
worse.

I worked with the guy who caught them. He heard them when they hit his
Range Rover & came running out of the house with a shotgun; caught up
with them a couple of houses down - stuck the barrel in through the
driver's window and, uh ... told them to stop.

They're lucky he didn't kill at least one of them. The cops had already
been called several times & following the trail of debris arrived too soon.

OTOH, they got off with a slap on the wrist, so there was little of a
lesson for them to learn. I expect they all grew up to become Wall
Street bankers.

The basement is at ground level in back of the house. There's a wide

Darn, that's a sad story John! Why must senseless violence be so
senseless (not to mention so violent)?

My MGB Convertible was given to me by my brother-in-law who seemed to
accumulate cars as barter for doing roofing jobs above and beyond the
original quote. Whoever had it started their restoration with the
interior (rather bass-ackwards, if you ask me). The convertible top is
near new also. The body is pretty straight and it has these
ungodly-looking whitewall tires on it (rally wheels, not wires). It
has the "crack of doom" in the top of the driver's door just starting
to emerge after what looks like an earlier repair.

I really don't even know what it needs yet. I know it needs a fuel
pump and I'd want to clean out the gas tank before even trying to
crank it. Beyond that I'm not sure. I doubt that I'm ever going to do
a *full* restoration on it, but I would enjoy having it licensed and
drivable. Our town's annual Cruise Night is a yearly reminder of how
it is just taking up space in my garage.

The "crack of doom" is actually a fairly inexpensive repair. I had it on
the passenger side door, and IIRC, it was about $150 and you can't even
see where it was. We had a pretty good British Car mechanic over in
Durham, NC; factory apprenticed before coming to the U.S.

Their web site is still up, but the last post in their "English Car
Events and Classifieds" is from 2010. I probably ought to go by there
and see if they're still in business next time I go over to visit my mom.

Sheesh! What is it about Pentaxians and MGs? I've got a 1979 MGB
convertible under wraps in the garage, tormenting me for funds to whip
it into drivable condition.

The one in the basement is a 1978, and was drivable until a bunch of
high-school kids vandalized it. I live in a fairly quiet residential
neighborhood. I always kept it in the back of the driveway, but ONE
NIGHT, I needed to park a truck there, and moved the MG out to the street.

Four kids with a baseball bat did $200,000 damage in a little over an
hour. They mostly hit high dollar vehicles, which my MGB definitely
wasn't. About $3,000 of the damage is to my MGB.

One of them lived two blocks away around the corner from my house, and
that's where they started their spree from. Mine was the first vehicle
they attacked.

Basically what it needs is a new windshield, new driver's window and a
complete interior. I can't get the shards of broken glass out of the
upholstery & carpeting.

I have another tourer, 1979, sitting out at my brother's house. I
originally bought it for parts the first time I was rebuilding the 78.

But when I got it towed home, it just too complete to part out. The
engine needs rebuilt, it needs a new cylinder head (they crack between 2
& 3 because of improper torquing) and it's missing the master
cylinder/brake booster.

All of the parts I need are available from Victoria British/Roadster
Factory/Moss Motors if I just had the time, MONEY & energy. I guess I
got the time now.

The only part I ever had a problem getting from them was the smog pump,
and believe it or not, Lucas licensed the design to Toyota, who used it
throughout the 80s. All you have to do to get a rebuilt Toyota unit from
AutoZone to work is shift the mounting bracket 90 degrees (remove 4
nuts, shift & reinstall).

FWIW -

I attended a drive event put on by Porsche recently when the topic of brakes
came up after sampling their entire product lineup. One of the driving
instructors in attendance stated that one of the reasons for the great
brakes on their product line was a corporate requirement that the brakes
must be able to stop the vehicle from 80% of its maximum speed - and do that
25 times in rapid succession.

BTW their PDK 'auto' transmission - a seven speed dual clutch unit - has
just about made me turn my back on conventional manual transmissions - it
just too damm good! It needs to be experienced to be appreciated.

Yes, I will certainly enjoy HER car, as she could care less. In all
seriousness, I had to get her something as the old Saturn's brakes
just were not up to snuff. I was so afraid she would get herself into
a situation that she couldn't stop. I didn't notice that much until I
bought a new Elantra last year. The brakes are really good, but what I
have learned is that almost all the new cars with 4 wheel disc's have
very good brakes. The better fuel economy is a big help as well!

I bought myself a new (old) car in April. It makes me smile every time
I get into it. :-)

Thanks Walt!

Yes, getting something that stops well, that goes well, and that
doesn't eat one out of house and home on fuel and maintenance is worth
a lot. Modern cars, nearly all of them, are like today's cameras: they
just work much better than the older generation of cars did.

This little yellow bomb is just stunning that way ... it's fully into
the modern era ... and it's 12 years old. A new one is over my pay
grade to pay cash for and I won't get into financing, but I'll put the
money away so I'm ready to buy a newer one when they're 5 years old.

Sadly, it's not much different in my locale, at least between my home
and my office. 5 miles that can take 45 minutes to traverse sometimes
...

But I put some good music on the stereo and suffer through it. ;-)

Har!! We don't encounter that over here, but we do encounter the
hordes of "roadies" trying to take over the roads on weekends with
their huge groups touring around pretending they are doing the "Lance
Armstrong" thing!

I don't mind it at midday, but competing with them and morning traffic
gets bad at times.

Sweet looking Mercedes!
Yes, I will certainly enjoy HER car, as she could care less. In all
seriousness, I had to get her something as the old Saturn's brakes
just were not up to snuff. I was so afraid she would get herself into

Must be nice to have the space and the emptiness to enjoy it. Over here it's
not worth the money. Last week while I was cycling home from work I overtook
a Lamborghini Countach which was going as fast as it could.
