Re: OT Cloud storage
Hello, I'm trying to choose a cloud storage myself. Crashplan sounds interesting if you have large amount of data - though, how large is "unlimited"? Cloud is nothing more than "someone else's computer"; trust is very important, as Bill pointed out. How I'm planning to do it: I bought a NAS unit (a QNAP TS431p, inexpensive but can do a lot) for main, redundant storage. With the ongoing ransomware epidemics, I want to give my PC as little access as possible to the data (which a DAS or external drives can't do). That cheap NAS has tons of neat features, I still have a lot to explore. For example, it's now getting snapshots - the ability to revert your data to just before that ransomware encrypted it. It can also detect silent data corruption using RAID scrubbing (only with non-degraded RAID 5 and 6 arrays - and some would say ZFS is a better solution), and being a NAS I can access it from anywhere (even from my mobile). It has sync folders between multiple devices - with versioning. The NAS unit itself can take care of backups, on external drives and on the cloud. As for a cloud, I've made no choice yet, I was thinking about Amazon Glacier as I wouldn't need fast data access - nor something like an "unlimited" storage. I cannot stress enough the threat of ransomware (or other forms of data corruption). Backups are useless if corrupted data overwrites good data - use backup with versioning. And use at least 2 backups - main storage, even on a NAS with redundancy, doesn't count as a backup. Dave, with external hard drive costs being as cheap as they are, I'd suggest the hard drive as the way to go. A Lacie HD 1TB recently cost me around $80. Re: OT Cloud storage
I use 8 external spinny drives but I usually have only four or five active. Two are for current photos. The others are archives. Critical current work is also backed up on iCloud and/or Dropbox. SSDs are growing more affordable So I think my next two photo drives will be of that ilk, Paul > On Nov 19, 2017, at 1:33 AM, David Mannwrote: > > I use two external HDs. I use two external HDs. One sits next to the computer and the other is in a separate building in case of burglary or fire taking out #1. I sync them occasionally. I use them for photos and as Time Machine backups. If I ever come close to running out of space I'll buy new drives. Re: OT Cloud storage
I use OneDrive as my working storage* and offsite backup. Microsoft are unlikely to go bust overnight - people will have time to sort out an alternative. I also backup periodically (using Synctoy) to a USB drive which I then disconnect, to reduce the risk of infection from the laptop, if the hackers get in. Synctoy just copies, it doesn't use a mysterious backup format, so it's easy to verify that it has worked, and is restorable. * throwback to my COBOL days... > On 18 Nov 2017, at 15:06, William Robbwrote: > >> On Sat, Nov 18, 2017 at 8:52 AM David J Brooks wrote: >> >> I have been using multiple ext hard drives for my back ups mostly >> phots and documents. If it goes out of business, or gets hacked, etc, your data might just disappear. I’ve been using Drobos for over a decade now. I’m on unit two now because the first one was a USB-1, and was getting too slow with data writing as files got larger. I think the one I have now is a Drobo 5d. They seem reliable, and are infinitely expandable by increasing drive capacity. They offer double disc redundancy, so if two drives kaak, you don’t lose anything, though this comes at the expense of capacity. bill > > > Dave > -- > Documenting Life in Rural Ontario. > www.caughtinmotion.com > http://brooksinthecountry.blogspot.com/ > York Region, Ontario, Canada > > -- > PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List > PDML@pdml.net > http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and > follow the directions. > -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
