Thanks for looking and commenting, Ann.

I like your description that they look like tiny Christmas ornaments. I
never thought of that, but it sure works!

PESO: Monarch Condo

2021-07-09 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
My most recent endeavor in raising Monarch butterflies was a group of
larvae from Monarch Watch. Since the previous brood had devoured the
smaller potted Milkweed plants, I used my largest net cage for the new
fellows, who were very tiny upon arrival.

In addition to some smaller potted plants and some cut foliage from plants
growing in our yard, I placed a fairly large potted milkweed in the cage,
and left it there the entire time. There didn't seem to be as many
chrysalises as I had expected clinging to the top of the cage when all the
larvae had metamorphosed. When I removed the large pot from the cage, I
discovered the reason: a number had decided to hang their chrysalises on
the side of the pot, rather than climbing to the top of the cage.
Actually, there was one more than shown in the below image; I accidentally
knocked one off as I was removing the pot. I placed that one on some paper
towels, and it will probably still develop into an adult butterfly.

I was somewhat amused by the manner in which they all crowded together on
the pot, instead of spreading out as they usually do on the top of the
cage. That reminded me of a little condo development, with all the units
close together.

cages to feed larvae that hatch from the eggs I receive from a facility in
PA or from Monarch Watch.

The Tropical Milkweed plants have more developed flowers, and are
attracting Monarchs to nectar, as well as to lay eggs. Two of the larger
plants have caterpillars feeding on them, from eggs laid there either by
butterflies I released over the past few weeks or by those just passing
by. In either event, seeing them is quite rewarding. For whatever reason,
female Monarchs seem to consistently choose Tropical Milkweed, if
available, over native milkweeds for depositing their eggs.

The first image shows a Monarch, possibly a female looking for a place to
leave her young, taking nectar from a potted Tropical Milkweed. The second
image shows a wider scene, including part of our deck.

Peso- Monarch Pass Fall

2014-10-31 Thread Jack Davis

Attaching a fall scene found just west of the crest of Colorado's 10,000ft
Monarch Pass summit.
Appears the constant wind up the pass has influenced the tree growth and was,
probably, what eventually caused this cabin to settle back against the up slope.
The sky was especially dark due to elevation.

Cutting it off now for awhile.

Comments?

Thanks!

Re: Peso- Monarch Pass Fall

2014-10-31 Thread Bruce
l like the composition and the setting. The time of day causes just a little
too harsh shadows on the building. I think I would do a light amount of HDR to
tone down the contrast a little and maybe bring out the shadows a little more.
It might be a very powerful image.

Re: Peso- Monarch Pass Fall

2014-10-31 Thread Jack Davis
Yeah, I toned down the glare of the aspen which I'm sure greatly influenced the
meter. The light was intense at that altitude.
When posting, I gave it a touch of fill light and saw some relief. I get what
you're saying, Bruce.

Thanks for the kind remarks, Bruce.

PESO -- Monarch I

2014-09-22 Thread P.J. Alling
This was in the running to be my Synchronicity entry, but while it and
Monarch II which I'm also going to post in a few minutes, were
technically better, the image I've actually chosen, seems to fit the
theme better, well at least it does to me. This is a pretty deep crop
from the K-5II file, I had a number of Monarch butterfly images where I
managed to get close enough to qualify as Macro shots, just barely, but
none in which the butterfly showed it's colors to any extent.

Out of the three in the Monarch series, I personally like this one
(III) better especially for its background. In the other two there
are some thorns which bother me.

However in number I, the backlighting pops the orange in the
butterfly and it would have been lovely to have it on number III as
well.

What if you crop number III to a square format, dropping the bottom?

Ciprian.

P.S.: A minor nitpick about the HTML of your PESO: on my laptop
display (900px in height), even with the browser in full screen mode,
none of the pictures fit into the screen. A simple solution to that
is to simply add a style=max-height:80vh; to the `img` element in
your HTML, and now the image will be at most 80% the height of the
browser window (actually the viewport, which is the inside of the
panel where the HTML is displayed.)

They are amazing. And when they are feeding during their migration they will
let one get quite close. I guess they are so intent on refueling they need to
eat at all costs.

In my three and a half years here in New Toronto I've only experienced the full
migration once; I've missed it other years. They don't move at the same time
every year. Depends on the weather during the summer or something.

Anyway, three years ago was an awe-inspiring experience.

Thanks for the kind words and thanks to all who looked and commented.

Nice one. Background looks okay to me in regard to sharpeness. No
edge brightness or highlight blooming. However, it would be even
better if the background was more out of focus.
