Ha ha ha. Ain't a review, Mark, it's an opinion on the concept of the K-01.

I sincerely hope that many misguided folks (and videographers)
purchase this camera so Ricoh can make money to fund the growth of the
GXR system :-)

Re: Pentax Forums in depth review of the K-01

2012-03-19 Thread Miserere
The overly enthusiastic Steve Huff has reviewed it and wasn't too impressed:

http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2012/03/16/the-pentax-k-01-camera-review-design-masterpiece-or-design-fail/

The camera was almost useless as with the bright sun I could not
compose my shots AT ALL because the LCD was washed out about 90%

If Pentax would have put in an EVF it would have made this camera
MUCH more fun and useful.

the K-01 has superb IQ but for me, it loses some ground in design and
usability and I am a big fan of usability.

I have ZERO complaints on the image quality of the K-01 as this is
its BEST feature.

High ISO with this camera is superb. ISO 12,800 is about on par with
the Leica M9 at ISO 2500.

The Pentax has decent AF speed but [...] with the 40 2.8 is fast but
it is no speed demon.

Part of his conclusion:

I can see it now, Pentax fans are going to be giving me heat for
talking bad about the camera design. I will hear about how just
because it doesn’t look like a rangefinder that I do not like it.
Well, that is not true at all. I like many cameras that are not
designed like a rangefinder but in my opinion, and again, this is only
MY opinion, the design is a fail. It’s too bulky, too fat, looks like
a toy and is not comfortable to shoot. It doesn’t feel like a camera I
can “connect” with. Design IS indeed important to ME and I feel a
camera has to have all of the elements that bring it together to form
one mean, lean, shooting machine.

It's never a good thing when Steve Huff doesn't like a camera cos the
man never met a camera he didn't like...or so I thought.

Cheers,

The Ford O21C is astonishingly ugly. Ugly enough to make it Unique and
therefor desirable as a car. The Pentax K-01 follows in that
tradition. Whereas Newson is a furniture designer and a lot of what he
learned about furniture design carried over to auto design to make it at
least ergonomic as furniture, (though I'll bet repairing it would be a
bitch), nothing about the K-10 gives me any confidence that it's
ergonomics will be particularly good in a camea.

Ok, maybe my expectations were too high. Probably I have read some reviews of
recent Oly's or Panny's with AF 'almost as good if not better than DSLRs' and I
expected something similar instead of something average.

Anyway, I can live with it in a mirrorless, but not with the mentioned LCD/EVF
constraints, specially in such a (relatively) 'big' camera.

From my reading of the review, it doesn't say that the K-01's contrast
detection AF is much worse than anyone else's, just that it's worse
than phase detection AF.  This is still true in general for mirrorless
system cameras.  I'm not saying it's great  but merely that they
didn't compare the contrast detection AF with anything else.

It is a bit sad to read that autofocus is still Pentax Achilles' heel,
 now with contrast detection AF.

But for me, and after my experience with a Sony NEX, the real problem of
this camera is the lack of articulated LCD screen and (at least optional)
 electronic
viewfinder. And this time it is not a problem of space, I would say...
