It might have been worth taking some photos where you lean a little harder on 
the ISO. Some of my best shots involved pushing to 10,000 or beyond.   On cool 
shots where I have time for the shot, but not many opportunities for shots like 
that, I’ll try different strategies, preserve ISO, preserve DoF etc.

My one nit was that it might have been nice if you could have angled the plane 
of focus such that both the eye and the wings were in focus, (or rather that 
the eye was in a little better focus) but that would have probably meant not 
aligning the plane of focus with the wing, so that might not have even worked 
as well.  

I still think that it’s a great shot, I do wish that the picture were larger, 
particularly when I want to give a good critique of a photo.

Yes, I realize the DoF is shallow.  It was worse on most of the other
shots.The light was not great, and the damn little guy was squirming
around a bit, so even on a tripod, I was afraid to slow the shutter speed
down too much.

Very nice! Not the painted lady I was expecting (as in Victorian house).
