Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
I wanted a Spotmatic in the early '70s but couldn't afford one. I bought a used Mamiya 1000 DT and two lenses -- a Mamiya/ Sekor 55/1.8 and a Vivitar 200/3.5 for $100 from a guy who "repossessed" cars. Made a lot of money with that kit shooting for Super Stock and Drag Illustrated Magazine. When the Mamiya died I bought a Fuji 801 because the Spotmatic had been discontinued. I eventually bought a used Pentax H3v, then numerous Spotmatics and finally the K- mount cameras. Pentax has served me well. I'm a loyal dog. Same experience here. Got my first Pentax, an Asahi spotmatic in 1969 after using a friend's spotmatic for a few races. I've only owned Pentax slrs ever since and except for a motor rewind issue with a PZ1, I've had no issues. The PZ1 was my most heavily used camera - I pushed thousands of 36 exposure rolls thru it in the years I used it. I've had an ES, MZ-S, PZ1, PZ1P, MX, ist*D, K10D, K20D and K3. Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
Well I beat the crap out of my equipment, my recent LX issue is a case in point. So I may need a replacement body after somehow killing main camera. I have a lot of old lenses, don't use as many as I used to, but I find a couple of old K and M mount lenses very useful, and I worry about two things, that Ricoh will decide to stop all support in camera for all mechanical functions which will leave even the newer DA limited lenses crippled, (I've seen enough calls for this on the Pentax Fora to understand how short sighted people can be), or Ricoh abandoning the K mount altogether in favor of following the mirrorless trend.* I find the focus and zoom by wire functionality that's being introduced into DSLR lenses troubling too. Part of the point of a DSLR is that you can focus and frame without having to turn the damned camera on. I don't find that trend quite so onerous on a mirrorless camera since you can't actually see through the viewfinder unless it's powered on. I understand that it makes the lenses simpler to design, but I still find it counter productive. I do have a small worry about Ricoh simply shutting down advanced camera production, they've done it before, but that seems less likely than the the other options. *If you actually examine the numbers it isn't that much of a trend. Since my first Pentax, an ME-Super back in late 1979, I've had numerous others. Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
Who knows, Japanese companies are notoriously cagey about such things. I expect that they make the most money on the higher sales price items. The problem is Ricoh needs to produce an entry level camera that's good enough to hook users and lure them into higher profit upgrades. I suspect that they actually sold more K-5 cameras including K-5II and K-5IIs cameras than they actually sold K-500 cameras. In point of fact, the K-P looks like an entry level camera in a lot of respects disguised as a flagship APS-C camera. Fit finish and materials are probably up to K-3 levels, while the actual working hardware is actually derived from the K-70. Start it at a K-3 price grab back as much development cost as possible from early adopters then let the price drop to entry level. That could actually work if the camera feels like a pro level camera. I must say that's one of the things I like about the K-5II. It's one of the most professional feeling cameras I've held in it's class. Almost no one needs more than that, and those who actually do /need/ that kind of resolution aren't enough to sustain the mass market, they buy Phase 1 backs for their medium format cameras. and pass on the costs to their clients. For everyday use the camera in the average Cell phone is good enough so the market for stand alone P&S cameras is dead. The Megapixel race has become pointless, image quality is now better than good enough, and has been for two generations of camera sensors, and anyone who's had to pour over several hundred almost identical frames probably doesn't figure that they need faster than say 7 to 10 frames per second, damn that's too much like work if you're doing it for fun. That's the state of the current camera industry. Most people already have the camera they perceive that they need. Which is why the market for advanced cameras is contracting. I mean really, look at this list, how many of us are still using K-5 family, or earlier, cameras. I mean sure a K-3 would be a small boost in frame rate a bit improved AF, and actually a significant boost in resolution, at very little cost in image noise, but I don't covet it, and a used K-3 sells for not much more than a used K-5II. More importantly we're not the typical user base, we're more likely to want the latest and greatest. Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
True, but with the current situation the biggest competition for the newest camera is it's previous generation. A lot of people who didn't live through the Camera Craze of the 1970s when SLR technology made it possible for everyone who wanted one to have a semi pro level SLR, at prices that were insanely affordable. Most of those cameras and lenses were mechanically reliable, and optically capable of taking photos as good as the most expensive system cameras, in the right hands. Unfortunately most people who bought them didn't have the right hands. It actually took talent and dedication to make good photographs, (who knew). Those cameras ended up in attics, basements and the back shelf of the bedroom closet. For a long time if someone wanted a good semi pro camera, they already had a friend or relative willing to unload a pretty good SLR cheep. The camera market crashed and a lot of manufactures left the industry, Ricoh being one of the last to give up the ghost before the age of Digital Photography. Now it looks like they /may/, (notice the weasel word), kill the original Pentax brand and technology base where before they only killed their own take on it. Yeah, I don't know, why wait till shit starts breaking and your equipment loses value steadily? If the sky truly is falling, then maybe its time to sell all and start over. Maybe Nikon will buy the patents for the in body image stabilization, that is certainly a valuable technology. Do they have a just-in-time stocking model for camera and lens spare parts? Or do they plan ahead for expected demand several years out? Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
Notice the word "may" in the headline. That's a feature of the 11th commandment, Cover thy ass. With that headline the writer and editor are admitting that they have no idea what Ricoh is actually going to do. Admittedly it's not good that the imaging division is having resources moved to other more profitable operations, but Ricoh's core competence is office machinery, copiers in fact, and even that division is having trouble in the current market. I wouldn't say you shouldn't worry, but, I don't think that even Ricoh upper management has any idea of what to do at this point. On 4/12/2017 9:55 AM, Gonz wrote: Well that sux. I doubt if it will affect me much, if at all. I anticipate buying at most one more traditional DSLR - I don't feel tempted by the K1, but might be interested if there was a follow-up APS-C model with most of the improvements from the K1 (and, no doubt, a few more as well). If that doesn't materialise I'll probably either stick with what I have today or switch over to Olympus; the EPL1 has served me well over the years, but is several generations behind in sensor technology (though still good enough for casual everyday use ). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
There are an awful lot of possibles and maybes in that article. There's no way of knowing whether Ricoh is actually getting out of the camera business, and that article is written in such a way that if they do, the author can claim to be prescient, and if they don't he can just simply forget it was ever written. Demand for mid level and high end DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras has fallen in the last few years cell phones are now good enough general picture takers that entry level DSLRs and Mirrorless are feeling the pinch. Even Nikon is feeling the squeeze. Sony want's to own the camera market one way or another and is willing to burn Yen in heaping piles to get it, and Canon can continue on as they are simply from inertia, for a very long time, everybody else is going to have to retrench or go under.
