My old passport had a real, recognizable photo, taken with my glasses on,
affixed to the page and laminated into place.

The ID photo in my current U.S. passport is almost unrecognizable due to the way
it's printed on the page; looks like it was scanned and printed about 4 stops
over-exposed.

Ironic in light of the increasing demand for physical photo-IDs.

I think that rather depends on where you are.

I recently had to renew my (British) passport. Not only was I able to

submit

my photograph as a digital image - the passport itself also contains an
encoded
form of the image, readable electronically. And apparently at some UK
airports
I could just walk up with the passport in hand, place it on the desk, and

look

into a camera. My digital image from the camera would be checked against
the
biometric data encoded in the pasport, and if everything checked out I

would

be able to proceed through the gate. I'm sure there would be somebody
present
to supervise things, but the whole verification process would be done
digitally.

"Paperless office". Pffft. :-)

LOL.

When a new pharmaceutical product is launched, the company has to apply
for market authorisation in USA, Canada, EU, Japan and China separately.
Or used to anyway... Not sure about the current status of cooperation
between the Asian countries.

The documentation requirements in Europe, Japan, Canada and USA made the
pharma industry _beg_ the authorities for an electronic alternative to
paper. I personally saw an application arrive by mail to the Norwegian
Agency as four metric tons of paper. In addition, Norwegian red tape
demanded that a separate copy be sent to the National Archive. It was
like half a freakin' rainforest! And all of it would have fit snugly on
to a DVD.

A big part of my job at the agency was to implement "paperless office".
Although we carefully avoided that term. We called it "electronic
handling". It worked out quite nicely in the mid-2000s, but as part of
that project I dug into the history of previous attempts and found
references to consultants from IBM trying to convince the Agency of an
imminent paperless future in 1991. During lunch one day one of the
well-seasoned secretaries had got wind of my poking around in what she
called "the old crap", and described the enthusiasm shown by the
consultants back in the day. She had been quite dazzled by them,
especially on the course sessions where the consultants laid out how
neatly everything would work in digital. She said it  probably was why
she particularly remembered one elderly pharmacist commenting that the
paperless toilet would happen long before the paperless office.

It took me a while to find the documentation for that project by the
way. Eventually it had been archived with the label "X-files".

So I guess "the truth is out there" still. :-D

Based on the location, background and the music mentioned, I suspect Larry

between popular in Europe Boogie-Woogie and Charleston of 30's-40's and is
usually danced to fast swing jazz music), while John is talking about the

RE: What do you think about the future of Pentax "flagship" APS-C-camera line?

2018-11-15 Thread jcoyle
I had a client for whom I wrote a training section management program, part of
the output of which was joining instructions for the trainees. Whenever there
was an error or issue with the detail, the whole lot would be reprinted and the
waste thrown in a bin, which I collected from time to time.. Now, twenty years
later, I'm still using the printed-on-one-side only waste for internal test
reports!

I think that rather depends on where you are.

I recently had to renew my (British) passport. Not only was I able to submit
my photograph as a digital image - the passport itself also contains an encoded
form of the image, readable electronically. And apparently at some UK airports
I could just walk up with the passport in hand, place it on the desk, and look
into a camera. My digital image from the camera would be checked against the
biometric data encoded in the pasport, and if everything checked out I would
be able to proceed through the gate. I'm sure there would be somebody present
to supervise things, but the whole verification process would be done digitally.

In my experience, consumer computing technologies gave boost to
higher paper consumption, including very frequently senseless paper waste.
In the era of typewriters, for a few errors, people would use a
white-out, and only occasionally would reprint the entire page. With
computers, people thoughtlessly reprint the entire 10-20 page-long
because of a minor typo on page 19. ... and then once more, and
then again.

But often, the higher paper consumption does help productivity.
Guilty as charged: while preparing grant proposals or publications, or
reviewing those of others, - most of the time I do that on paper.
It's just much easier to see things, and you can have many pages in view
(if you have a large table or couch).

So, I was very surprised to hear about the paper being the reason
for the office-product companies' financial problems.

Hi All,

While considering various options of replacing my failed camera, I've
considered of what would be the next steps of Pentax with respect to
the new models.

Asahi Man (a reputable Pentax-insider information leaker on dpreview)
indicated that Pentax has a big focus on FF cameras and lenses in the
upcoming year (which is apparently a big 100 anniversary year for
Pentax, or, more exactly, Asahi Kogaku Goshi Kaisha).

In his recent posts, I haven't seen any mentioning of the APS-C line.
The last flagship APS-C camera (K-3ii) was released 3.5 years ago
(Apr. 2015), about 1.5 years after K-3 (October 2013).
I might be wrong, but it seems to me (and it looks like some other
people, including at least some PDMLers were of the same opinion) that
KP, announced in January 2017 (more than 1.5 years ago) was positioned
a bit below K-3, even though it is clearly above the "second-tier"
(K-50, K-70) product line, and its release is in the time line
corresponding to the flagship line. (Actually, my memory is a bit
vague about the parameters that made KP inferior to K-3.)

(You can see the summary of DSLR production years e.g. here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_cameras#K_Series_(Digital)  )

This suggests that Pentax probably somewhat lowered their top APS-C
line in favor of the FF line, and the next APS-C body when and IF it
comes out (which I'd expected to happen before the holiday season, but
it didn't happen, - so, maybe in spring of 2019), - it might not have
all the desired features that K-3/K-3ii had.

The impression I've got is that APS-C cameras might no longer be a
priority for Pentax R, and Pentax will just continue some
incremental releases in this area.

I realize that its a pure speculation at this point, but I was curious
about the thoughts of other PDMLers on this issue.

Cheers,

Igor

Re: What do you think about the future of Pentax "flagship" APS-C-camera line?

2018-11-14 Thread P. J. Alling
I would agree except, they can't really afford to give up any ground.
Pentax is known, as far as it is known, for having one of the best, if
not the best line of dedicated APS-C lenses, many like the limited line,
of extremely high build quality.

The K-1 is needlessly large compared to the K-3/5/P cameras, if you want
a relatively light compact DSLR, and you've got a bunch of DA limited
primes, telling people they live with a K-1 ff camera in crop mode at
15mp, and selling for 1 1/2 to 2 times the price of a 24mp, APS-C body
will drive prospective users to someone who makes what they want.

Ricoh's APS-C flagship doesn't have to have any thing near the
specifications of say a Nikon D500, but Pentax has to have at least be a
serious, contender to the N7xxx.

There are enough rumors of Pentax' eminent demise, not having a viable
APS-C flagship, with at least some actual improvements over the K-3II
will not help.  There needs to be a Pentax APS-C flagship just to remain
viable in the minds of the buying public. (Let's not get started on
advertising and distribution, that's another story).

Hi All,

While considering various options of replacing my failed camera, I've
considered of what would be the next steps of Pentax with respect to
the
new models.

The last flagship APS-C camera (K-3ii) was released 3.5 years ago (Apr.

2015), about 1.5 years after K-3 (October 2013).
I might be wrong, but it seems to me (and it looks like some other
people,
including at least some PDMLers were of the same opinion) that
KP, announced in January 2017 (more than 1.5 years ago) was positioned
a
bit below K-3, even though it is clearly above the "second-tier" (K-50,

K-70) product line, and its release is in the time line corresponding
to the
flagship line. (Actually, my memory is a bit vague about the
parameters that made KP inferior to K-3.)

(You can see the summary of DSLR production years e.g. here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_cameras#K_Series_(Digital) )

This suggests that Pentax probably somewhat lowered their top APS-C
line
in favor of the FF line, and the next APS-C body when and IF it comes
out
(which I'd expected to happen before the holiday season, but it didn't
happen, - so, maybe in spring of 2019), - it might not have all the
desired features that K-3/K-3ii had.

The impression I've got is that APS-C cameras might no longer be a
priority for Pentax R, and Pentax will just continue some incremental

releases in this area.

I realize that its a pure speculation at this point, but I was curious
about the thoughts of other PDMLers on this issue.

Cheers,

Igor
