Re: Elliott Erwitt
Damn! .. I never met him in person but he wrote a blurb for my book Sign Language in 1992 .. that never got used because he was out of the country when he got the photos .. he sent the quote in to my editor (one of his, of course) saying "if it's not too late, here's a quote for you" I scanned the postcard and used it on the back of the "sequel" to Sign Language "Signs Gone By" that I self published a couple of years ago. But there were other connections too,and another missed op to meet him in person at the Leica gallery here. Had connections to him through other friends of mine.. one a cinematographer he worked with whose wife was a close friend of mine and Erwitt gave them a very large print of his wife and baby that is in the Family of Man... Another friend's son accepted Erwitt's photos for dental work and a little place called Reubens that sold empanadas near where I worked in Soho back in the 90's was lined with his photos - Owner was a friend of EE. Oddly, the day he died (yesterday) I had just commented on instagram on a street photographer's photo of a man holding his dog and they looked like each other .. the street photographer was someone I met recently who by coincidence had just been look at my book in a little park in Brooklyn and had told Fernando a photo of his reminded me of one of Erwitt's. I guess his getting to 95 makes it less sad.. I just now saw the Times obit.. published on-line 3 hours ago. ann sad On 11/30/2023 6:20 PM, Bob W PDML wrote: has died, unfortunately. Re: Elliott Erwitt Pittsburgh
I used to live in Pittsburgh. From about 1988 till 1998. Very photogenic city, especially at the point where the rivers meet. I used to live near the Ohio river downstream from there and loved to hear the sounds of the festive paddle boats carrying tourists down the river. Re: Elliott Erwitt at the LEica Gallery
Hi Frank ... A couple of years ago I visited a nearby gallery that had an exhibit of WES prints, and there were quite a number of prints in the bins that were also for sale. Relatively inexpensive works of art ... amazing print quality. I highly recommend that everyone interested in photography hie thee to a gallery and see the great silver prints made by these masters and their printers. shel frank theriault wrote: I was lucky enough to see a couple of Elliott Erwitt's works when a Magnum 50 retrospective road show hit one of Toronto's galleries in the spring. It was awe inspiring. They had prints of his shot of Kruschev (sp?) and Nixon and the famous seagull on the lampost with the jet in the background. I love that one! As an aside, it amazes me how much (or rather, how little) prints by some of these modern masters go for. I took a peek at the pricebook while at the Magnum show. Most were in the $2000 to $3000 US range, including iconic prints such as Death of a Loyalist Soldier and the like. I know I posted this before, but the most expensive was Mr. I turn my back on photography, it's not a real art form Cartier-Bresson, who despite his position, sees fit to ask $8000 a print for the kid with the wine bottles print. In fact, I read a recent interview of him, where he became quite agitated when asked about that photograph, and almost yelled words to the effect: I hate that photograph. But, he'll glady accept money or it, apparently g. I know, I know, HCB is a senile old man, it doesn't negate his earlier body of work, but it's hard to hear one's heros say such things. Anyway, here's my point: It amazes me that we could buy authorized 8x10 prints of some of the best known photographs ever taken, for such a small amount of money. In what other of the visual arts would this be possible?
Re: Elliott Erwitt at the LEica Gallery
Hi, a press photographer I know was given (given!) a stack of Larry Burrows prints that he found in a cupboard in a press room. For an investment in photographs, journalism is likely to be your best long-term bet. Look at the record - very few of the greats in photography are trying to be artists. Most of them are journalists. The overwhelming majority of photographers who try to create 'art' are forgotten very quickly. -- Cheers, Bob Saturday, January 3, 2004, 2:18:02 PM, you wrote: Hi Frank ... Re: Elliott Erwitt at the LEica Gallery
Hi, I met Elliott Erwitt a couple of years ago and got him to sign my copy of 'Museum Watching'. I rather cheekily asked him to sign it in Russian to my friend Sasha, which he did, so I promptly gave it to her as a present. He is a very fine man indeed. That book inspired me to become a museum watcher, and I have taken some very nice photos in the VA and other London museums. One Sunday while I was having lunch in the VA with the aforementioned Sasha and her children and who should we see queueing at the checkout but Elliott Erwitt! Of course, he was with other people, so we didn't disturb him, but it was a great thrill. -- Cheers, Bob Saturday, January 3, 2004, 2:02:25 PM, you wrote: I was lucky enough to see a couple of Elliott Erwitt's works when a Magnum 50 retrospective road show hit one of Toronto's galleries in the spring. On the same note, I would say one of my top ten favorite poems ever was Auden's SEPTEMBER 1, 1939. Some time in the 70's I read a NY Times Mag section article on him where the interviewer mentioned it and Auden replied Oh, I don't feel that way anymore. I have to second this one. I took it in the last time I was up in NY. I always try to make it into the gallery. From the brochure I picked up it seems the exhibit began on 21 November. Hi, t I thought it was ok, nothing great. I was surprised she got him to t bark. it seems to be one of his party pieces. When I saw him a couple of years ago he also barked, to demonstrate how to get little dogs to jump straight up in the air. -- Cheers, Bob

I really thought Lopate did a pathetically poor interview of my personal idol. I could hear Erwitt cringe and a couple of the stupid things Lopate said. Just wondered if others who listened had a similar reaction. (I'm rather anti Lopate anyway, so I'll have to say I didn't cut him much slack.) annsan
