RE: I never enter photo contests BUT...
First of all that is indeed a wonderful photo; I remember it well and I know I've already passed on that opinion. As for the contest, I'll echo what many others have already said about it being a popularity contest, the large number of entries giving those at the top of the list an advantage, etc. However all those things were true for the contest that Mark Roberts entered a few months ago and I still voted. I'm not voting because I have to register at what's obviously an advertiser-driven website. I just don't want more of my personal information in the hands of commercial interests. I am getting tired of it. Makes me appreciate our little list all the more... Re: I never enter photo contests BUT...
Yes, I am aware of that. And yes, I'm sure that some commercial interest or other can (and probably has) mined some information from our witty pearls of wisdom. However, two points: 1. PDML is not driven by or affiliated with any commercial interests, and I really appreciate that, and, 2. The forum that has set up the contest in question certainly is funded by advertisers. This contest is not really about honouring worthy photographs and photographers, it's about getting people to register information for use of their advertisers. That pisses me off. Kripes, they even have the nerve to ~not~ offer the winners a prize! Yeah, there's lots of info about me already out there; I don't want to make it any easier for them. Man, that's a whole gang of images! I do like yours a lot, but I can't seem to get my Like to take. I'm sure I've said it before, but I've always wanted to do storm photography out on the plains. We get some decent storms here in KY that would make nice photos if it weren't for the topography. The best I've ever gotten was a big roll cloud, but it just doesn't look as dramatic as it would with a flatter, less cluttered horizon. I reloaded the page and the image has 11 views but no Likes. I believe you have to be logged-in (and thus HAVE a log-in [register]) for a Like to be registered. I wonder if more people aren't having difficulties - there are a suspiciously low number of likes on almost all the images. H. Storm photography is indeed a blast. To be in position to get the good stuff you have to chase, as in be willing to travel to find the good storms and then be in the proper position for either the cell or a particular feature of the cell (like a wall cloud or the funnel or tornado that it spawns). Since most storms are moving, that means attempting to move with them as they go through their cycles (both lifecycle from birth to death and their cycles of occlusion and growth). It helps to have an interest in weather/meteorology to understand how/where supercells will form and how they behave - which might be in the best position to have a longer life or more likely to be a tornado producer - if that is what you are seeking. Nobody wants to see a tornado be a threat to life or property, and fortunately the vast majority of them occur in open country (which we have a LOT of out here on the Plains). Those of you with Android or iPhones (or iPads) interested in weather would do well to purchase the RadarScope app. It not only brings NEXRAD Level 3 radar imagery in real time to your phone, but also shows your location (if in proximity to the storm) on GPS capable phones. Unbelievable technology for a mobile device for a pittance. Those of you interested in software with a similar capability for your desktop or laptop, checkout grlevelx.com . However this kind of contest seems to have more problems than the kind in which a select set of judges passes judgement. A big complaint from posters in this contest is that images near the top of the list seem to acquire more votes. That's entirely logical, those voting are not required to look at every image before voting. Hence as interest wanes or time slips by the images lower on the list tend to get fewer votes, regardless of their merit. A recent monthly photo contest run by an insurance company here in Idaho had a similar format, except that anyone that registered on the site was eligible to vote. So it was not really a photo contest, it was a popularity contest. Those that could encourage or ask the most number of friends to vote would garner the most votes, regardless of image merit. Re: I never enter photo contests BUT
I agree with your assessment, Tom. I think the point of most web site related contests is just to draw eyeballs or provide one more reason to come back, reload the page, whatever. In this case, it is also to spur more registrations for the privilege of entering or voting. No contest prize is given out of the goodness of any entities heart. It is being offered in exchange for something of greater value to the contest holder (advertising exposure, word-of-mouth, etc.) Darren Addy Kearney, Nebraska -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
