Yeah, I'd say you have me beat by a pretty good margin, John! I probably played my first round of ADD in 1983, or so. You must be sitting on a small fortune in collector's items. I haven't played since I got out of high school -- before the 2nd edition Player's Handbook came out with the new classes. There were about six or seven guys I played with regularly, and I don't think we ever played a single round by-the-book -- though we had good intentions. And we always had a good time, which was the important thing. Eventually, though, it got to the point where we all had pet characters that we larded up to the point of invincibility, which took the sport out of it. Still, it kept a bunch of small-town kids entertained and out of trouble during summer vacations. I had the camera on live view as well as the outrageous ISO number. While I know autofocus can usually lock on in minimum light, I wanted to see if LV could do so as well. I tried to make it look more like a statue -- or even a head -- than just a mask. I tried to bring out the slight discolorations and the textures to make it more three dimensional. In the end, however, it is merely a reasonably decent copy of the original, as you point out. So what? A reasonably decent copy of the original might make a good illustration in an otherwise boring text book; a worthy use for a photograph in my opinion. And it has an added dimension for you because of the memory attached. We don't have the memory, but the photo at least takes us inside the museum as well as any museum catalog does. I don't think it is from a fountain. As I recall, it was excavated from a theater and was the tragedy half of a comedy/tragedy set of masks, but masks for display, not to be worn. I tend to struggle with images which are just representations of art. If you were to look in a book or something to just see what it looked like, then this does a fine job. But it leaves me with the feeling of just taking a picture of a picture. In order to make a picture of art, there either needs to be something very dynamic about the representation - could be emphasizing texture or lighting or something - or there needs to be other element(s) in the picture. Basically it changes the image from just being a copy of the original art to being a new piece of art in it's own right. So for me, this shot is more a good copy of the original, but doesn't really grab me. That is a very fair criticism. I took the image because something about the sculpture grabbed my attention and held it. I tried to capture the feeling that it aroused in me when I faced it. I tried to make it look more like a statue -- or even a head -- than just a mask. I tried to bring out the slight discolorations and the textures to make it more three dimensional. In the end, however, it is merely a reasonably decent copy of the original, as you point out. It still affects me, almost as much as the original did. That is probably because I can recall the experience of seeing the original. It is therefore easier for me to experience that feeling than it is to create the feeling in someone looking at the photo who has not seen the original. Does that make sense?
